Don't touch the shovel until you've scraped the top of the rootball down and identified the flare. Only then do you know the depth the hole should be.

I volunteer at a park and I've seen some beautiful examples of tree roots growing in a circle in the ground and girdling the tree because the roots grew that way in a pot and were never pruned at planting. The roots sometimes come out of the ground like a slinky toy. The tree never establishes itself in the ground, falls over easily, and eventually needs to be removed.

Absolutely, all container grown trees need to have their roots scarified on the sides and usually the bottom of the rootball. It is a major mistake in the video.

please consider doing a video on locating ROOT FLARE. purchased two smoke trees at Lowe’s last month - the root flare was buried halfway into the pot! had to remove 4-5” to find the beginning of the root flare. Had I trusted Lowe’s and planted at container level, it’d be dead in a decade.

It's a good idea to plant trees and shrubs which are endemic to your area. They are naturally hardy and have always been growing in your area, attracting indigenous insects and wildlife. With indigenous plants, it's never a good idea to use chemical fertilizer, rather use organic bone meal when planting and feed the tree until it becomes established with an organic liquid manure. Thanks for the informative video.

*E Gad, no wonder all of our modern era's new trees are dying everywhere!* D0H. _Retaining circling roots and keeping primary root flare buried, that's the ideal method when desiring tree to slowly suffer and inevitably fall over or die off within a decade._

Good short video but you perplexed me with the “a tree this small doesn’t really need to be staked” part at the end. I staked my small Redbud 2 years ago and it’s straight as an arrow and the heavy duty stake keeps it sturdy during heavy winds. The rest of the video is good but you didn’t cover root pruning which I find to be very helpful.

Unless the tree is in danger of tipping over or leaning badly after planting, there is really no good reason to stake a tree. That just leads to a weaker trunk development and potential problems when the stakes are removed.

Please do not use this planting scheme to plant your tree. I'll be generous and say that due to the age of the video, mistakes were not made intentionally. Never plant your tree too deeply. This video demonstrates a tree planted too deeply. Most arborists recommend planting the root flare 1-3 inches above the final soil grade. The root flare is the point where the trunk and the top set of root structures meet. That flare has to be 1-3 inches higher than the surrounding soil. The planting hole should be 2-3 times the size of the root ball. In addition, it is a good idea to loosen the root ball especially in a containerized tree so that you get the existing roots moving out into the environment. If left alone, the roots will continue in a circular path encouraging a girdling root that will eventually choke the tree. Whatever it takes, tease the potting soil away from the existing root mass and gently free up the roots up and done that root mass It is important to free up that root mass to ensure it is in contact with the backfill material. I have seen root balls so tight and root bound that it was necessary to slice the root mass with a knife to free up the root mass and prevent the roots from totally circling in on themselves. Never put a ring of soil around the tree at the end of planting especially if the native soil is high in clay. All you will end up doing is making a bath tub and drown the tree. Again, the root flare should be slightly elevated above the final grade. Water the tree well to ensure the entire root mass is wet, then apply no more than 2" of a high quality mulch around the tree without allowing the mulch to touch the trunk. Watering during the first growing season is part art and science and depends on your climate zone, rainfall, etc. The best thing is to consult your local agricultural service regarding recommended watering practices for your part of the country.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. (1) Failed to identify root flare and ensure it is planed exactly at grade level. (2) Failed to cut roots at sides and bottom of rootball, which greatly increases the chances of girdling roots. (3) Dike funnels water to the trunk, and away from root tips, encouraging roots to grow around the trunk, and not outward, as they should.
