hi John...I know you know this but for your readers....did you know that asparagus will go to seed? at the end of the season if you let your asparagus grow into a fern, the female plants will devlope red seed pods, inside there are 5+ black seeds (round like pepper corns) inside the red pod, one can collect these and plant them. It takes 2 full years to get to the point when you can plant the crowns (like John does here)...so time and more time is needed...that said if you have an Asparagus bed (that won't be disturbed) and the willingness you can put in the seeds and in time you'll have free asparagus crowns. Mine have been going for years and i'm very happy . If anyoe is interested I can show you what they look like

@old school prepper I took on an extra Allotment and the following year the Asparagus popped up, but was in the wrong plastic took the seeds, planted them in pots and that where they stayed for two years then prepared a bed and haven't looked back.

That bed of asparagus is going to do great John! I want to get a patch of it growing here. It takes a couple of years to establish but it is such a powerful vegetable to have and it gives back forever food! Great job!

My asparagus came from an old homestead in hubby's family. His great grandmother's sister's home. She was born in 1852. There is still asparagus growing there today. We dug some of it up and transplanted it. So, some asparagus will grow for a long long time.
