I am going to plant (aka "bury" in my experience RIP! I am no optimist) some aubrieta in the hope that it lives long enough to feed a bee, as I saw one (a bee) on a market stall where they were selling the plants!

Do we need to change the potting mix every year or fertilize on top of the gravel?

My Aubreitas in the garden have grown very large. Even though they’re still in flower, the centres of the plants have opened up to expose pale quite dry stems. I’m aware you can cut them back to promote bushiness but if cut back to the pale bare stems, they would look terrible (dead) and I’m wondering if they would grow back or not (I’m thinking along the lines of when a plant has woody stems and you’re not supposed to cut back that far as they won’t regrow). Please could you make a video advising on the correct time of year and a successful method of cutting back Aubreita without killing them? Or if anyone else who reads my comment who knows the best time of year and method for cutting them back, please reply to this comment. Thank you ☺️

I think I will try these. So it's plant in pots in January? Do they ever need to be watered and/or fed? Do they need to be kept indoors until they start to bloom/ Thanks
@JParkersBulbs5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Aubretia can be planted from autumn up until spring (in non freezing weather). Water on a regular basis when planting in pots, whenever the surface soil is dry. We recommend for potted Aubretias to be prepared indoors about 7 weeks before they should be put outside (once the last frosts of spring have passed). Apart from these tips, Aubretia are generally easy plants to look after. Hope this helps and thanks so much for watching!

You might want to add lime or gypsum to your potting mix. This plant is in the cabbage family, which doesn't like acidic soil... they'll put up with what they can get but, they will absolutely thrive in the right chemistry.

I'm growing this for the first time, I usually grow lobelia but I wanted something different coloured to blue but was a similar plant. Is each one of those plugs just one aubrieta plant or multiple? I know you can grow several lobelia in a clump like that but I'm not sure if you can for this one. Because the seeds were so tiny I planted them the same way I do lobelia but I've planted about a dozen seeds per cell in my trays, I'm wondering if I need to spread them out a bit or not?

"zone 3-9" on my Aubrieta Hybrida / Audrey Red Purple Mix perennial Aubretia seed packet. Blooms June-July. 6-10 days to sprout. 30cm spread. 1.3cm seed spacing. 3mm seed depth (so just sow directly on ground and stir soil around with hands). My seed packet says partial shade but the company's website says full sun. Wikipedia says both. mckenzieseeds.com/product-directory/aubretia-audrey-red-purple-mix/
