Just found this after a search on "how to plant dahlias". What a great video; so professionally done without a single hesitation, no pretentions and really informative. If only KZbin was all like that.

So glad I found your video. I just bought a box containing a brilliant white dinner plate dahlia and was surprised to find a clump of tubers inside. Didn't have a clue what to do with them. The box said to plant the pointy ends facing up, but a web page said to plant them pointy end down. Thanks for for posting your vid!

Thanks Jeff. I am a bit mystified by your saying dahlias became unpopular just after WW2. My old Dad was a dahlia man, and he grew them when he was able to turn his garden over from vegetables (During hostilities) to more decorative plants. He loved his dahlias, and there was a huge display every year; that passers-by used to stop in the 'right 'o way' at the top of the garden, just to hang over the fence and ogle the plants. Dahlias on one side, Chrysanthemums on the other! I wish I had the patience to grow these, but I think I'd probably buy new tubers each year! Lol! May your dahlias 'dale', and your garden 'garde'. Cheers

Good morning ☕️, afternoon or evening. I was watching your video and thinking I can do this. I just planted a few yesterday and I pulled out of the soil and put in the water. I am going to look at it tomorrow morning and plant it back into the pot. Thank you for the information on how to plant dahlia's.

Hi, Thanks for the question! There is some reasoning behind that, yes - it encourages vigorous new growth. Soaking the tubers allows them to take in water necessary for their growth before they are planted. Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for the comment! You don't have to use containers, we simply recommend lifting your tubers to store them frost-free. So lift each tuber from the ground, set it out in a cool dry place to allow it to dry out, then you can simply store it in a paper bag in a shed or garage to keep it cool but indoors and protected from winter frosts and replant next year. Hope this is helpful- enjoy your new hobby, hope you'll find it very rewarding!

Hi, just love your videos so simple and informative. I have been given some dahlia tubers. They seem to have been stored in sandy mix, they all look healthy but some of them are beginning to sprout and have cream/white stalks growing from the crown, should I nip that off and re store them or pop it in a pot, as it’s not really the right time of year. I don’t want to lose them but not sure what is best to do.

Hi Debra, dahlia tubers will sprout under warm, damp conditions, such as room temperature. The shoots on your tubers can be trimmed or not; they will not affect the tuber come spring time. However, if your tubers are trying to grow, they will be using up energy needed for healthy growth in the spring. I would suggest moving those dahlias into a colder area to slow down the sprouting. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Hi JP. I just subscribed to your channel. Great tutorial. It helped me out a great deal. Just bought my first dahlia. Know one else said to soak them. I'm in Oregon, US. Do you think mid March is too soon or late to plant them?? Thank you!

hi there, could you please explain more what type of containers I could use to make sure they are "froze-free". I am brand new to planting/gardening, just started a month ago. Thank you so much. Love-Light-Smiles~Fabi

If I may ask. Is there a reason to plop the Dahlia in water for 24 hours? How does it help?.

Ive never heard that , or done that either...i

Never heard of soaking the tubers in water for 24 hours. I would be scared they would rot , when you buy them these days, you get a piddly part of one tuber. I've had some tubers rot, so disappointing.
