I'll second your plug for Great Lakes Hops and the fact that for a few extra bucks you get a much better return than on rhizomes. I just have some varieties around the house, but the plants I got from GLH have been far superior to other experiences I've had. Glad to hear it's still a good option on a bigger yard.

We've got hops going wild (acres and acres of them) growing along a old rail yard in my area. I'm an occasional home brewer. I harvested some and although I don't know the AA of the plants, it's fun to use them. Question for the comments section (or John) -- Any tips on transplanting wild hops into my backyard? I've grown rhizomes before but never transplanted. Is NOW the time of year to transplant? I think rhizomes typically go in during the early spring.
@farmmarketing8 жыл бұрын
Better to transplant in the spring generally. If you're moving the whole rhizome/plant you can do it in the fall when the plants are dormant.

Hi John. Thanks for sharing what you do. Are wood hop poles more economical than metal in your area or does metal leach something undesirable into the soil? I'm wondering how long yours will last.

Hy john, thanks a lot for this interesting video! You ad some lime to improve your ground PH. Do you know the PH of your soil ? What's the PH for growing hops? Thanks in advance!

Hey John, great videos! I'm in Northern California and love to grow hops and raise chickens for fun. Your videos are very informative and entertaining. One question I had while watching a few was if you even run your chicken tractors down your hop trellis rows instead of mowing... keep up the good work! CHEERS!

Some tree companies will drop off wood chips. Especially if they have an area they can come and dump without you having to be there, and easy access. Great way to get alot of organic material and fight weeds.

When you chop up and sterilize the dirt so much you deprive the plant of extremely good fungi that extract minerals out of the soil and help the plant through its roots. Even if the dirt is dense plants can grow roots right through concrete.
@pbgd35 жыл бұрын
Sort of a yes and no scenario. Huge fan of no-till as well and you really do want to build a living soil but hops are a bit weird. They need to aggressively root early on to be productive year after year. Most no till is focused on the impacts of planting annual vegetables that you propagate then plant down through your much into the soil. Churning them yearly will kill your soil. Getting hops to root they live for years and then no till other crops around. Once going I could easily see doing a series of other annuals around them, but you do need to get them rooted asap for production.
