@@charlescoker7752 The sources I buy from online, usually begin shipping in July (suggesting we plant them July-September to let the roots get well-underway before colder weather). THAT SAID, I have planted at this time of the year in the past (and will again now). I've had some of those (Spring planted) bloom by the end of the season, others did not. The worst thing I had been doing was planting the rhizomes too low. I've had better luck since I stopped doing that.

I have grown iris for years. I would have separated the two iris, cut off the mother rhizome & cut the leaves into a fan shape to keep them from falling over. The one on the left looks like it is two iris. You do keep the top of the rhizome on top of the soil, make a little mound to put the roots in the ground & I also trim the roots a bit.

It is September 17, 2021, and I will be planting irises in the morning and I wanted a KZbin instruction video, and yours was the first result of my "how to plant iris bulbs" criteria and it will be the only one that I will need to look at. Your instructions are very simple, straightforward, informative, and very helpful! And because of your video I now know that what I had previouly referred to as bulbs are actually called rhizomes. I'm an American living in the eastern part of Austria right on the border with Slovakia and the climate here is pretty much the same as upstate New York where I am originally from, so right now is the perfect time for planting irises. I am now subscribed to you.

Thanks! I hadn't thought there was a method. There's so much more that needs to be addressed. 1. Should you break a rhizome apart to make them face in the same direction? 2 How far apart do you plant irises from each other? 3. . How many irises do you plant together to make an attractive cluster? 4. How do you know know when to divide them into a new grouping?? 5. How many years does it take for them to start blooming again after transplanting? If they don't bloom again what could be the cause? 6. Out of curiosity, where do the seeds come from? 7. Where does the flower emerge from?
@PuppyBiteforTrump2 жыл бұрын
Christine Ribone; Answering your questions in order: 1. Which way you plant your rhizomes in the *long term* doesn’t make a difference. In the *short term* it does…..short term meaning straight away you would plant the fan leaves facing fanned out to the view you want to see them. (Like holding a set of playing cards that you are viewing fanned out and the rhizome would be your arm holding the cards in front) 2. Plant singly or in groups of 3 12”-24” apart depending on the iris’s rhizome size as their are various sizes and species. 3. Personally I think plant 3 groupings of 3 rhizomes planted 24 inches apart would look very nice if you have the space as they will fill in the area and should be divided every 3 to 5 years to keep reproducing and it’s also visually appealing to see a full area of irises than an area with bare spots…kinda starts to look like a dead area. 4) If your Irises have grown into a circle ⭕️ Pattern with a bare spot in the middle or an “s” pattern with bare spots - its time to divide as the rhizomes are overcrowding each other. If they haven’t been tended to they will start squeezing each other out and will stop producing flowers also they will have leaves. 5. Depending when you plant and your climate. I’m zone 8 and I get lots of rain, I also have 4 true seasons. If I plant early September the irises have time to settle into their new home and bloom in the spring. If planted early spring it is possible to get flowers, but most likely be the following spring. If your Iris isn’t blooming it could be several things: *planted to deep or to shallow. *they need well draining soil so they don’t rot or dry out. *over crowded. * not enough sun ☀️ meaning they need 6-8. They don’t like to be shaded out by other plants….plan a spot just for them. 6) Irises are planted from rhizomes not seed. 7) it grows a stem between the fan leaves which that stem will produce a flower. I noticed on my variety when 7 fan leaves are produced then I know it will flower….the inner leaves ( the middle of your fan are your newest leaves ….your stem and flower will come up from and your outside leaves are oldest they will naturally fade, turn a brownish color and you can pull those outer leaves off and toss for a tidier appearance.
