Well, I'm taking the plunge and planting my peony in the ground , out of it's container. Hate the idea that it could take 3 year's to bloom as I have been waiting that long for it to bloom in the pot. Peonies take me back 50 years to my grandparents garden. I love them.

I have my peony in a good sized pot, when I bought it, she came with 3 big pink flores, this was approx. 7 years. They haven't flowered since then. The leaves come well, good growth, healthy, but that's all. Last year I took the rizoma out of the container, changed the soil, cleaned the bulb and replanted them not as deep as they were. I water them as been told, but seldom fertilized them. Anyway, how can I make them flower? It's been so many years and nothing happened. Please advice me what could be wrong and what shall I do to make them flower. Thank you so much for your comments, Cristina

Peonies are notorious for this! They may take years to settle into a spot and produce a decent display. If you have now planted them at the right depth then this is a good starting point. Unfortunately you may need to wait until they re-establish, but I would certainly recommend applying a slow release fertilizer in spring to feed them through the growing season.

Mine is herbaceous and year three. Planted correctly, humus rich soil, and grows back healthy each year. No flower buds as yet though.
@thompsonmorgan3 жыл бұрын
The variety, growing conditions and age of the rootstock can also have an influence. They will get there eventually, but if it is taking a while then you may prefer to try again with a fresh plant.

My mother offered me bare roots of peonies for my garden, however I was wondering, if I plant them now (mid-May), do I have a chance to see them grow and perhaps get some flowers this summer or is it too late? I'm at loss at what to do with them in all honesty
@thompsonmorgan4 жыл бұрын
Hello. You should definitely plant them asap. They should certainly grow this summer however, I wouldn't expect to see flowers until next year as it does take them a good year or more to settle in.

Can't find ANY place that shows how to tell or plant bareroot peony that doesn't have any eyes. In that case, how do you tell the root from where the eye would be? I have 6 bareroot plants and not ONE of them has an eye on it. Not even a hint of one. can't tell the root from the eye part (since there isn't any) don't know if I'm planting them upside-down or not.................

I received a mail-order Peony plant about 3 inches in height. Can I plant it indoors before I plant it outside in the ground?
@thompsonmorgan4 жыл бұрын
You can certainly pot it up and grow it on until it is larger. It shouldn't be necessary to grow it on indoors though. You can stand the pot outside in the garden.

I have a root peony. My garden soil is very heavy with clay - can I improve the soil or am I better off planting it in a large pot?
@thompsonmorgan5 жыл бұрын
You can easily improve the soil by adding plenty of organic matter to it. If it is extremely heavy then mix in some horticultural grit as well. You can grow them in a pot but they always do much better in the ground.

Thank you. I am waiting for 5 different Tree Ponies, a collection of red, white, yellow, purple and pink plants. The soil is good and ground is fertile with earth worms. The sun is good also. The will get up to 6 hours of sun per day. I need to know how much distance to plant in between each plant? Great video by the way and you are as beautiful as a flower.
@thompsonmorgan8 жыл бұрын
Planting distances really depend on the type that you are planting. Herbaceous peonies will only need to be 45cm apart but tree peonies will need much more space depending on which variety you are planting.

Can herbaceous peonies grow indoors in pots?
@thompsonmorgan4 жыл бұрын
The main issue would be providing sufficient light. I imagine if you grew one in a bright conservatory then this might work, but they will always do best outdoors. The best way to find out is to give it a go!

My bulbs have sprouted but the leaves are looking like they are dry and curled up. What could be wrong?
@thompsonmorgan6 жыл бұрын
Leaf curl seems to be quite a common thing with peonies early in the season. It is often related to changing weather conditions and generally rights itself as the season progresses.

Why doesn't anybody mention lime?
@thompsonmorgan10 жыл бұрын
Hi Samsgarden, generally home gardeners shouldn't need to add lime to their soil. Peonies will happily grow in slightly acid, neutral or slightly alkaline soil. It is assumed that people gardening on very acid or alkaline soils will amend it accordingly or choose plants suitable for their soil type, kind regards.
@milesaway36996 жыл бұрын
Samsgarden I have very acidic soil and gorgeous peonies. Totally unnecessary amendment. Spend your money on a good compost instead.

Hello. It does depend upon the variety. Some do have very heavy flowers especially after rainfall. If you find that your flowers are flopping over then provide a stem support to hold them upright such as this ... www.thompson-morgan.com/p/peony-herbaceous-plant-frame/KA9263TM
@JB---4 жыл бұрын
The way they bend over and look heavy is one of my favorite parts. But mine do not all go to the ground. It's more of a cascade effect, with some standing up, some leaning over, and some all the way down. Just a matter of taste, I guess.
