Wow! I am very grateful for the corn starch trick. We are getting a late start, the weather hasn't been cooperative, so the corn starch on the cut potato is a tip we will do today. We are planting our potatoes and onions today. Your excitement with each video is infectious. Those grow bags are very cool; you have enough room for a 6-foot round grow-bag now! Lol 😉 Thank you again for another informative and entertaining video. Much love Kaye. Will be sharing this, sharing is caring . 🤗

This is very interesting.I have never heard of using corn starch to the cut potato.We use lime.Nice to know of something else we can use.Our favorite method of planting potatoes, is digging a long ditch (about shovel deep), add amendments, then potatoes and covering with about 2 feet of straw.In the fall, when the potatoes die back, all you have to do is remove the straw.My grandson loves the blue potatoes...well, so does grandma, lol.

Thank you so much for this video. I am new here and I learned SO much from just this one video. I will look forward to watching all of them and hopefully getting a big, beautiful garden this year. I hope you make a video on tomatoes since I have had serious problems with my tomatoes for the last two years. Prior to that I was getting so many tomatoes I was able to can enough for year round use and the last two years I have gotten major diseases. Thanks again - your enthusiasm makes this so worth watching.

I have a whole tomato playlist but I’m wondering if maybe it’s because you’re planting them in the same place because like potatoes you’re not supposed to grow them in the same soil year after year

I just planted mine today as Spring is just about to start, the weather is very springlike. I have identical bags to yours. I put 5 in each of two bags. I am going to order some more bags as the felt ones are better than plastic in our hot climate here in Australia. First time for me. Wish me luck!

Wonderful! You don't have to chit them, you can use whole potatoes, too, if you want to make it easier. LMK how it goes!

I'm going to try all the suggestions I learned. Chit , one eye only , keep whole with 1 ,chit or whole 2 eyes , cornstarch after cut dry or plant ( thanks for this tip). Keep all eyes , plant at different depths ,use store potatoes, or buy seed . Pots, grow bags or raised beds& harvest new small & leave till larger. Depending on yields, I ll reproduce methods following years .
@Latebloomershow
@Latebloomershow Жыл бұрын
Or you can get seed potatoes from your local coop. If from store, buy organic as non-organic can be sprayed to keep from sprouting. You can plant small potatoes hole or if you don't have many you can chit. As for depths, plant potatoes two inches under soil and plan to mound them up as they grow. It gives the stems support and will cover any new potatoes emerging around the mother. You want to make sure the sun doesn't hit those potatoes. Keep them covered. You've got this!! LMK

thanks for sharing your tips. im growing purple everything this year. i got there mini tubers from Baker Seed and they are marble size potatoes. paid $17 for 10 tubers but they gave me 12. they each have a tiny eye starting to sprout. my question is once I grow them how do i preserve for a 2nd harvest? i read purple taters dont store well. can you get a 2nd harvest in same year from ones you grew? also i have a pack of Clancy actual seeds from potatoes doing those too..
@Latebloomershow

I grew the mini tubers last year (this video is from three years ago) and got a decent harvest, but the potatoes are regular small potato size. I don't know how you get back to the mini tuber size. My purple potatoes did not store well and sprouted in the kitchen by Christmas. If I had a root cellar it would be a different story.

Call me crazy but I recall that most potatoes do not need hilling up and hilling up does not produce more potatoes. Most potatoes grow wide, not up, so the more space you have in width the more potatoes you can grow. Here's a great read on the topic.

No wonder Ruth stout was so successful! In California I didn’t have room for a 20 gallon pot but that explains why the guy on the gurneys site had so many potatoes in that bag

I’ve never planted any vegetables before. How often do you water potatoes, how do you keep the tops from turning green and do pogoes need a lot of sun? Thank you!!
@Latebloomershow
@Latebloomershow Жыл бұрын
Potatoes will grow in some shade. Keep adding soil to keep them covered when they start to surface. When the tops look a little limp, or the surface of your pot feels dry, water. They are the easiest things to grow. Good luck!

I actually don’t know but think it would dissolve 🤷‍♀️ if you’ve got the time to wait a few days you don’t have to use anything you can just cut it and let it heal over before you plant it

How do you keep bugs and animals from destroying or eating them?
@Latebloomershow
@Latebloomershow 3 ай бұрын
Interesting question. I can't recall having a bug problem with potatoes. Occasionally I might see a few bug holes, but was lucky no voles dug them up. Of course in grow bags near the house, you have no problem with voles. They won't expose themselves across a driveway for fear of getting eaten. Raccoons only dig up plants to get to grubs for the most part. So, no, potatoes are the easiest things to grow I've found.

@Latebloomershow
@Latebloomershow Жыл бұрын
It’ll depend on the temperature to some degree but give them some sun and water them when the soil gets dry and you should be fine and when it gets hot in the summer if they’re still in grow bags think about putting a saucer underneath them so that they don’t dry out as fast
@Latebloomershow
@Latebloomershow Жыл бұрын
Also it depends on how big the sprouts are you know sometimes the green will show up in a couple of weeks maybe a month.

@@Latebloomershow Thanks for the reply Kaye. Yes I meant the Potatoes. I found out yesterday to much my dismay that most Potatoes bought are GMOed now. How crazy is that. Are you sure the seed potatoes were not GMO? Just because they were labeled organic does not mean they are GMO free.

@@Latebloomershow I spent about $300 for 8 grow bags and potting soil to fill them. Including extra perlite and potash. Got $3 worth of potatoes. In the ground I tried sweet potatoes. Cost about $200 to get it set up and such. Got about 3 pounds of sweet potatoes. Noe of this counts the time to water water water daily either. People claim both are easy to grow but apparently that does not apply to me.
