Elizabeth L. Johnson said, So now we know. Yams are a jungle-grown root, overseas, and we grow either white sweet potatoes or red sweet potatoes! This was a very informational, educational video. I took notes! Needed to know a lot of this! Thanks so much, Mark and Wayne.

Thank you for this video. I find growing potatoes is super easy. I had no idea what it would take to grow sweet potatoes until I found your video.. But I’m so excited to give it a try and hopefully be able to pass them along to my adult daughters along with my other seeds I save from my garden. I too would love to purchase Wayne’s sprouts if/when they are available. Thank you for all that you do.. God bless you and yours

Thanks Mark, this is very timely for me. This is my first year to grow sweet potatoes, not a very common crop in the Pacific Northwest. I am growing them in a greenhouse.

Thank you so much for summarizing at the end as his voice was so soft that I had difficulty hearing and understanding what he was saying. I learned a lot about why my sweet potatoes were not wintering over. I stored them all wrong.

Mr. Miller, I'm a young person who would like to grow your potatoes! I am trying to do beauregard potatoes/yams this year, but I didn't get a hold of any to make my own slips until fairly late so I'm not sure it will work. But when I do plant them, how far apart should they be? Also, thank you for the splendid video. I need to go and adjust my sweet potato 'bath' so the sprouts can grow properly. I'm not sure they're going to work in the jars they're currently in now that I see how it works.

I’m sorry but Mr. Miller’s sweet potatoes are not available this year. They should be planted about 12 to 18 inches apart. Thanks for watching

Thank you! I'd love to grow these heirloom sweet potatoes in Belgium. Do you think there is a chance they will survive shipping here? A few moistened slips might make the trip. How can we make this work? Let's make sure that the sweet potatoes are preserved for many generations.

Thank you JoLyn. I have to wait for about two weeks to see if Wayne Miller has enough to sell this year. I am also seeing what I can do to be sure they are available for next year. I will try to keep everyone posted in upcoming videos. Thank you for asking, I would hate to see these potatoes "bite the dust" as Mr. Miller said they would do when he stopped growing them.

Very interesting! I' would hate to see this man's life work go away!! I'd be very interested in obtaining some of his seed stock to keep the line going! I know there are probably plenty more folks that feel the same!! Being in Amarillo, Texas it's a bit far to drop by and pick up a few starters but maybe when we go up to PA to see our family in Stewartstown, if it's not too far away, we could make a visit to Mr. Miller......Thanks for the video!!!

You absolutely DO NOT need a root. All you need is a node - a growth tip. It will root just fine out in the field as easily and readily as it does in a jar of water.

Wayne says to dry out the sweet potatoes with a fan for 2 weeks. But, I didn't hear him mention that it needed to be very hot and humid during that time. Wouldn't the high humidity contradict the idea of drying out the potato? Curious how Wayne does this since it wouldn't stay that warm or humid in October when he's curing his potatoes?

Yes, I have the same question
@LivingLife1128
@LivingLife1128 4 жыл бұрын
In our region it's still pretty warm many days in October. The hot house he dries the sweet potatoes in is really quite warm and is also very humid. This stage of the sweet potato's life is really more of a curing than a drying, while talking with Wayne I realized he often use the word "dry" when others would use the word "cure". The hot house really provides the conditions needed for the curing process. Very good question, thank you!

@@LivingLife1128 My husband's grandmother always put her freshly dug sweet potatoes in the trunk of her car for a couple of weeks to cure hers. She lived in a big sweet potato area in North Carolina and would glean the potatoes after the farmer dug up his field. Where she lived one knew it was fall when you saw huge semi trucks full of them.

Where can we order these from him or you and do they come with instructions for BTE gardening? I'm confused about "rolling the vines" or cutting the vines back. And you don't just plant a potato and let them grow? You plant the seed potato in dirt or water then just take the slips and plant them instead? Why can't you just plant a whole potato?
