Sprouting seeds by setting the net cups in trays partially filled with water may be more reliable than sprouting directly in the tubes. Once there are roots hanging out of the bottom the net cups can be put into the tubes.

The pump running 3 times a day is sufficient. The cups hold water. Kelby will send you a reminder to add plant food on day 10, or whenever the plants have true leaves. That's when I usuallt add the nutrients. I go by how the plants look, not by how many days.

Very helpful. Thanks! What nutrient solutions do you use for your different systems? Do you stay with the ones suggested by the companies? Also, do you use rockwool for all of your systems? I notice that iHarvest uses a different medium that seems like it would be better for recycling outside in my garden. I know some people say rockwool should be fine for recycling outside, but I wonder.
@plant4table
@plant4table 3 жыл бұрын
I use MaxiGrow in most of my other systems, even with the Gardyn. I just want to simplify the process because I don't want to order different nutrients. Even for the Aerogarden, MaxiGrow seems to be doing fine. For fruity plants, I switch to MaxiBloom when they are ready to flower.
@plant4table
@plant4table 3 жыл бұрын
iHarvest uses rapid rooter, a peat moss material. It's supposed to decompose in the soil over time, though not instantly. I read somewhere that rockwool will not decompose, therefore it is not environmental friendly. I am not sure if there is a type of rockwool that easily decomposes. If you find one, please let me know. I have used rockwool to sprout seeds, then moved them to the soil garden. The plants did well.
@karenmcdonald8271

@@plant4table Thanks so much for all this information! I was thinking that MaxiGrow sounds like a better solution, as I'm trying to be as organic as possible in my practices. I'm going to continue looking into the medium issue and will let you know if I find out anything more. Rockwool seems to be processed from basalt and other components, and basalt is being considered as something that could helpful for agriculture and mitigation of climate change citizensclimatelobby.org/study-crushed-rock-added-soil-can-pull-co2-atmosphere-mitigate-climate-change/ , but I don't know about the end product of rockwool. :-) Also, I'm curious to hear about what my organic farming friends who keep up on the research think about basalt and rockwool. NOFA has a good paper about organic systems www.nofamass.org/content/soil-carbon-restoration-can-biology-do-job, but though it mentions biochar, I haven't heard anyone outside of the internet talking about basalt or rockwool. Thanks again!

Do you have an example of a lighting and watering schedule you use with new seeds like this without the membership that helps them grow successfully?
@plant4table
@plant4table Жыл бұрын
The Gardyn setting is defaulted for the water and the light schedule, with or without membership. You don't need to change anything unless you want to change the time the light goes on/off to fit your schedule. The water pump runs 3 times a day (every 8 hours), and it runs 5 minutes every time. So it on at 8am-8:05am, 4pm-4:05pm, 12am-12:05am. The light is on 16 hours and off 8 hours a day. Example of default light schedule: 6am-7am at 49%, 7am-9pm boost 100%, 9pm-10pm 49%. This mimics the 1 hour of early morning light and end of the day. You can keep it on boost for the whole 16 hours if you like. I have not changed the default schedule because they are perfect for my schedule. Let me know if this helps.

Do you think there are smaller Kratky cups that might fit more snugly, or did you stop using them and now only use the regular cups from Gardyn? Also if I have 1" rockwool, instead of 1 1/2" rockwool, do you think that it will be too loose?
@plant4table
@plant4table 2 жыл бұрын
I have not tried to find different net cups because the ones I am using are just fine. There might be one out there that fits more snugly. I try to salvage the Gardyn netcups, but if I can't, I just use the black net cup. Unless money is a nonfactor, there is not need to pay for Gardyn netcup. The one I demonstrated works just as well. Your 1" rockwool is fine. As plants grow, the roots will stable themselves into the netcup and the rockwool becomes irrelevant. Rockwool is there to hold the seed and keep young plants stable, but thats about it. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the video and your other videos. I am trying to decide on a system and these are helpful. I was a little confused about one point. I thought you had to soak the the rockwool cube with the seed in it before putting it into the system. Did I misunderstand that? I had the impression you we're supposed to put the seeded ycubes in a tray to soak and germinate. Any help you can provide me with understanding this would be appreciated. The Gardyn system is more compact and with the lights built in fits into the available space better than the Iharvest, but I am a little leary of Gardyn's overall proprietary approach. Net cups and rockwool are very inexpensive compared to buying seeded ycubes from them.
@plant4table
@plant4table 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, I popped the pod directly into Gardyn because this is a new system, new crop. When you start a system from scratch, there should be not nutrients in the water. Therefore, it is totally fine. For my other Gardyn, if I have to pull out some pod and replace with a new one, I have to let it sprout outside first because the nutrients can kill off the sprout. I would wait until the plant grow true leaves before putting it in the system that has high nutrient level. I do not buy seeds and cubes from them. I understand the frustration that people have regarding the membership. To me, it is no different than buying a prepackaged Aerogarden seedling kits. You can choose to buy the kit, or you can buy the parts and put together yourself. And Aerogarden app is not as well built as Gardyn. Another thing to consider is that unless you keep growing the same type of plants, you will end up with a vault of seeds that you can never use up. Ask me how I know 🤦‍♀️😂 But I agree, the membership is steep and they should change their way of doing business to attract potential buyers. Or they should market their product differently. Gardyn is just a very well built, well designed system. I should say Gardyn is sophisticated. iHarvest on the other hand is a straight forward system and some people prefer that. However, it is unfair to steer away from Gardyn just because of the membership. You are still able to use the phone app to control the system just fine. I did a video about membership. Hope this helps!

@@plant4table Thank you for your help with my initial question. Also, hearing your thoughts on the contrast between Gardyn and iHarvest is very helpful. I am currently stuck in my own decision. It seems to me that Gardyn, without the subscription, is not appealing; proprietary parts, expensive seeded cubes and lack of direction. For example, without Kelby to tell you to change the water, or without a person being experienced enough to know enough to test the water or change the water, Gardyn users are liable to have problems. On the other hand, with iHarvest, you start off with a meter and being told to test the PH, etc, and all parts and consumables (net cups, rapid rooter, plant food) are easily and cheaply available from other sources. You are learning about hydroponic farming. I own an Aerogarden and a Miracle Gro Twelve and have learned only a little since the units are meant to "hold your hand" and not require you to be very smart. Something I would like to ask you is about the lights; integrated into Gardyn and freestanding in iHarvest. Have you found any deficiencies in either lighting system? I have the impression, just looking at Gardyn, that the light might not be reaching everywhere adequately. On the other hand, I wonder about the free standing lights in iHarvest. I think they state that you might want a third light in the center. Do you have any problems with the lighting in either system? Are you spending time adjusting lights on the iHarvest? Do you find that they are in the way when you tend to the plants? Thank you for any comments on the lighting or other differences that would be important.
@plant4table
@plant4table 3 жыл бұрын
@@glennpolin7374 Sounds like iHavest is for you. It is easier to replace the pump in iHarvest, you can get any pump from Amazon for fairly cheap and it will work fine. Gardyn on the other hand, you have to rely on the company's parts if you need to replace anything. After all, that is their business model, just like the Aerogarden. Honestly, I bought Gardyn because of the design. As for the lighting, I find them to be sufficient in both system. There are spots that get less light than other spots, thats why you have to consider the placement of the types of plants. I added a light on top of Gardyn just so I can put tall plants at top. Without the additional light, I would move it to the middle section of the columns. As for the iHavest, you can get 1 more light from IGWorks if you want more lighting. It's never too much light imo. Last time I grew lettuces and they did well with just the 2 lights that came with the system. And no, they are not in my way while tending the plants.
