Not gonna lie, sounds way better than I expected. This update definitely elevates the microfreak. The filters and algorithm are really smooth, and in this price range, that's impressive. For those of you that have an mc101, that also has a wonderful stereo sample playing engine and can do this really well while adding effects and drums and polyphony if you decide to go the groovebox route for just a little more money than the microfreak. Bonus points for being able to glide/portamento convincingly on both these machines.

I have had an MPC for awhile and also recently purchased some analog synths, so I've been thinking the MicroFreak needs to go bye-bye. And here you and Arturia go again giving me reasons to hang on! I always liked the Arturia controls and form factor.

This is literally the first thing I thought of doing when I heard they added sampling to the Microfreak as I already have Moog samples. I don't have a Microfreak, however, as I had analog synths on my shortlist ahead of it, but is finally thinking of adding the hybrid.
@markallasred6034 Жыл бұрын
This is gonna be great as I already have a ton of samples for Decent Sampler and other software synths. all sorts of Moogs and other vintage Rolands Oberhiems CS80 DX7s Prophets etc. Theres a world of crazy good sounds at Pianobook and I got a whole library of Vintage drum samplepacks free at reverb last year. The point being that now I can access them on actual portable hardware instead of having to use a laptop and midi controller plus software. OH and the Granular effects YAY!

I’m so happy microfreak added samples. My microfreak was collecting dust and was considering selling it, till the update. It’s the only synthesizer I have though since I’m never going to have a budget to buy a Moog but now I truly love it. I always loved moog synthesizers, but can’t afford it. I’m trying to get a car though lol

Get a Werkstatt while you can. I have a werkstatt and Microfreak and controlling the Statt with the CV outs on the Freak is pretty amazing. It's like 130 bucks on reverb and you have a real moog and a cool keyboard and sequencer to run it.

Great and very useful of you to get a better idea how good the sample engine works. 🙏Seems like there is a smooth timestretch algorithm at work. Otherwise your 3-OSC-sample wouldn´t probably work that well over this pitch range. The Microfreak now seems to be a perfect tool for 80s old school sampling-synthesis if you take its massive mod-matrix and analogue filter in account. Its like an vintage Akai-S612 sampler expanded with modular features to me.

This is one of the longest buildups for a firmware patch I can remember in years. You wouldn't mind sharing a few of your samples here? @dzod Жыл бұрын
One annoying problem with analogue synths is oscillator drift. You dont get that when you sample it instead. You get the sweet spot on every note every time. Producers been doing this since samplers began.
@automaticgainsay Жыл бұрын
The reason you want analog oscillators are the subtle, and not-so-subtle, variations in frequency, timbre, and amplitude. These variances generate distortions and imperfections that result in a tone that is pleasing to the ear. Synthesizer manufacturers experimented with DCOs in the early 80s because they were rigidly locked in tune, but found that when oscillators were locked in tune, they sounded sterile, unnatural, and eventually fatiguing to the ear. THAT is why the Junos have chorus on them. The variations in analog, when sampled, become repetitive and unnatural. Fine for short sounds, though, especially with multiple iterations of the same note provided randomly when played.
@dzod Жыл бұрын
@@automaticgainsay yes all of that is true but sampling a synth note and playing an octave lower sounds dope. The older and grittier the sampler the better.

@automaticgainsay Жыл бұрын
@@fuzzupuzzu "Vactrol" is the brand name of a component that basically includes an LED and a light sensor. The light is converted to voltage, and is use to control various functions. Great sound but I really don't see what the fuzz is about. You really need to start sampling... You'll get a fantastic sound on any sampler with analog filters. Try sampling the Minimoog on an Emax, Sequential Prophet 2000, Prophet X or even a Analog RYTM... etc, etc. Even a good sampler with digital filters like the Roland S750 or any Ensoniq sampler will sound awesome and in many cases will actually improve the original sound. This has been done for decades man, I guess in this case it's great, only if you take into account the low price of the Microfreak... otherwise it's nothing new. Great video, as usual. Thanks.

My guess is: the Microfreak basically has been a great value for the price already at release, and it *keeps getting better* with *free* firmware updates. It seems the fuzz is less "look, nothing else can do this" and more "look, this is another thing the Microfreak can do now".
