nah they are easier, as the transition and timing along with bizarree chords is what makes this sneakily difficult. rnb and jazz chords are difficult too, but this is just ugh, very tricky. @@DanielAlvarez-oq8ex

I came here right after learning from your lesson on Angeles and just want to say thank you. Elliot has been playing in the back of my head for about 20 years now Angeles for me was a mountain I couldn’t conquer the first time I tried so I have a real reverence for it and really just for him as a player. After taking some fingerstyle lessons, a few years of practice, i decided to give it another shot and saw you had a tutorial. I’ve been following you for years and am a big fan so knew I’d have everything I’d need to try again. After about 3 practice sessions, I’m about 75% of the way to playing it up to speed and confident I’ll be at about 90% eventually very soon. So thank you. One of my favorites songs, from one of my favorite songwriters, and you, sir, are officially now one of my favorite teachers. I appreciate your energy and you are an absolute natural teacher- to be gifted that way is rare. I work in education and consult with teachers so have some experience- to teach expertly but also with humility, and with attention to the learner the way that you do is what I myself aspire to in my own work, it’s also exactly the way I would advise anyone else to do it. Keep your same energy, man, never lose it. And again thank you. Knowing how to play angeles is a gift you gave me for free (and now also between the bars as well!). We don’t really know each other but please know you really helped this stranger. I’m not sure how to properly thank you or if I even deserve it. ✌️

@@seanmcgrath1616 Hey! I still play, admittedly I haven't been practicing much for the past year or so but I do still pick it up from time to time. I was given a piece of advice shortly after I started learning--motivation comes and goes but just keep playing when you can. Definitely has been true for me. I still enjoy the guitar but I just accept that I'm probably not gonna be that guy that can solo for hours or play 50 different covers accurately. I'm happy with my playing and still enjoy it when I pick it up. These days I mostly play blues/folky songs and practice scales a bit.

About that chord at 8:00 (what you labeled as Ab6 or Fm with an Ab bass): as an almost classically trained musician, this is an F minor chord in first inversion. There’s a descending bass note pattern in that passage from Ab back to F (chromatically too!)

Love this lesson - thankyou! If the weird chord progression over "...don't want around anymore" put's you off, you can totally play F, G, Am and it still works. If I was open micing this song that bit would be my Achilles heel, so I'd go for the simple way and nobody would notice.

I found this song and a few others of his thanks to you! It's funny that I used the same lyric myself in a piece that I wrote. The cycle of depression and drinking, makes you feel that you're trapped between the bars so to speak. Looking out, always observing and feeling like a prisoner, a slave to the system. Good job

The chords actually go into eachother really well if you use the right fingers, for example when going from the c shape to the one with a B base instead of bringing up your middle finger slide your ring finger down a fret and then just pick up your middle finger, that way you can easily transition to an E by just simply putting your pinky and middle finger on the frets they’re already sitting on, making it even easier to transition to F by just moving your 234 E shape up a fret and baring your index finger.
@totalpwnership11 жыл бұрын
Hey Justin. Thanks so much for posting this. I tried to learn it ages ago from the "kitchen" video you mention and really struggled with the strum pattern, incorporated bass notes and working out the exact chords. Bought a new acoustic yesterday after a long while without playing and was pretty intimidated by the idea of playing this when I found your video. But a couple of hours and I've got the general shape of it down pat. Just need to practice and polish now. Thanks so much!

I know this is from quite some time ago, but on that funky F#/Am, I just make it easier by starting with the Am and thumbing(or middle fingering) the F# bass on 2nd half to walk down to the F. Its easier, and adds a layer of complexity that’s actually in line with the melody of the song.

Not quite as moving as the original lyrics, with all respect to Justin. Seriously, I find this habit in Justin's teaching be sooo helpful, including the "to-the's" and such that help keep rhythm. This has been a major help for me in playing changes more smoothly and in time and in order to play and sing at the same time. And in this case, it's true that I only *might* actually attain that C with a B bass when I try so that lyric is right on :)

I learned to play this song thanks to this video. It was really helpfull to have each chord described in detail and played slowly. Thanks! I've adjusted to play a small variation from you at the chorus at: "...you've been before, that you...", I strum the chord every time I vary the bass tone, like Elliott does in the bathroom/kitchen recording of the song. Also, I'm not used to using my thumb for chords, so I end up using the bar grips instead. Good work on the video! I might check out more of your stuff once I master this song. Getting there soon!
