Why not learn to play that keyboard laying around? You can learn anything online if you have the motivation. There is no excuse not to with all the readily available information nowadays. Have layed the drums and bassline for Billie Jean using my DX7. One thing Ive noticed is the original is in a slightly higher key. Now I dont read music but the bassline part should actually start on the major white key just right of where you start on the black minor key to be properly in tune with the original. Thus this means the three main chords will be different too.

You should play octaves on the root bass note with the left hand only at the same time as when the right hand strikes the chords in F# pattern and keep same pattern for the B. Try it and you hear it right away. It sounds better but granted, it's way harder since you have to move the left pinky allot (you take the root note and the root one octave down but not up).

Hi Jeff, love your videos. I learn a lot. I did have one correction though for this song. In Riff 2, when the synth jumps to a inverted D chord, the bass line in the original recording is a little different than what you are playing here. The original recording omits the A key once on the climb down, which gives the groove that bounce. And then the second time it does that same thing PLUS drops low to the C# right before going back to Riff 1. So for Riff 2 the bass goes: B, F#, A, B, "pause", F#, E, F#, then B, F#, A, B, "pause", F#, E, C#. Then back to Riff 1. This is what I hear anyway, am I wrong ?

Hey folks, just a suggestion. When you transition into that D chord where the bassline changes, try making it a Bm/D chord instead of that D/A. It gives you a really cool voicing, especially since the difference between the F#m and D chord in these inversions isn't totally perceptible. Give it a shot, let me know how it sounds to you!
