I'm getting a "you booted ctgp in a unusual way" error despite me doing every step from the video

Followed you up to 6:36, but instead of launching CTGP it just straight opened up then vanilla Mario Kart Wii. So I closed it. And I restarted Dolphin. Had to add Path again to the WiiSDSync so that CTGP-R Channel would show up on the Games List again. I clicked it. It skips to the menu screen. I click Launch game and it just asks me to "Please insert the Mario Kart Wii game disc." Don't know where to begin troubleshooting that.

is there any reason you want to use CTGP-R specifically? it's much easier to play similarly fun mods like OptPack, MKWii Deluxe, or Retro Rewind and those ones actually support online play on emulator.

@@szyl No specific reason. Had initially thought that CTGP-R was crossplay and CTGP-D was Dolphin only. It appears the first doesn't play online at all on PC, and the latter is true. That was my only motivation. Just figuring out what's what in this Mario Kart mod scene that I only found out about a month ago after modding my Wii U. Have CTGP-R, the first Midnight and Retro Rewind on Wii U. Now I'm in the process of getting these mods on Dolphin thanks to your videos.

@@Zerroth CTGP-D is crossplay (along with pretty much any other mod like Midnight and Retro Rewind) it's just next to no one runs it on real hardware. It's just CTGP-R specifically that's designed by the creator to not work on emulator for whatever reason.

this won't let you play CTs online. you'd have to play another pack (like retro rewind) for that.

For some reason my ctgpr is incredibly laggy, I disabled write back cache when I get into the game, my cpu clock override is 24% and my internal resolution is 1080p. Any idea as to how I can possibly fix this low framerate issue??

as mentioned once or twice during this video, CTGP-R on emulator requires a stupid amount of processing power meaning you need a really really good PC to run it even remotely good. I'd reccomend checking on mods that aren't specifically designed to not work on emulators like MKWii Deluxe, Retro Rewind, and OptPack instead.

I have no clue why that wouldn't be dialable, but if I remember correctly you can set a save-state and reload it to be able to disable it. are you maybe running an older version of dolphin?

it's not that it's not optimised well, it's actually specifically optimized to NOT run on dolphin which is why this crazy workaround is needed. Much easier to play literally any other pack (such as retro rewind or OptPack) and they run on low end hardware.

CTWW on dolphin is totally a thing, just use an alternative custom track distro (like mario kart midnight) and it will work exactly the same as standard worldwides, CTGP is only an issue because MrBean hates emulators and purposefully makes CTGP hard to run on dolphin.

CTGP-R doesn't work online via dolphin. However to play any other pack (since CTGP-R is the only one that doesn't work), you WOULD need a NAND backup.

Ok, I’ve managed to everything working but I do have an issue. When I close the game it fails to save the session to the SD card. The error message shows as: “Failed to sync card with folder. All changes made this session will be discarded on next boot if you do not manually re-issue a resume in Config > Wii > SD Card Settings > Convert File to folder now!”

Dont use flatpak. They have, from what I know, restricted privileges so when you try to enter a path that is out of its permission, it crashes; or thats atleast the only logical answer I can give. I installed the dolphin-emu package via the terminal (for me sudo pacman -S pacman-emu, on mint its apt i think idk) and that should work better.

@@KingFudge38 depends on what you're looking for tbh. Personally my favorite pack (that isn't Wave Kart Wii which I've been working on) so far has been OptPack, but Deluxe and VP are great options too. There's a lot of different packs available lol.

Doesn't work on Mac. I don't think I can make the game portable so I just linked the WiiSDSync folder for the game path. Everything looks good to go, with CTGP showing in my games list. However, when I try to play it Dolphin crashes completely (not a black screen, but quits). Not sure if its possible on Mac, but if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

does mac hide file extensions by default? if so the file you're making is actually 'portable.txt.txt' and not 'portable.txt'. it's been the most common error that like 5-6 other people have had, cuz according to the website dolphin can be made portable on mac.

@@szyl I actually have enabled file extensions, so I can see .txt files. I think the problem is that when Dolphin is installed on Mac, it's just Dolphin . app (had to space out to comment. YT thinks it's a URL) and doesn't have any of the other files or folders you see inside the Windows Dolphin-x64 folder. So there's no folder for me to even make a portable.txt file. All the "User" files you see in your folder are located in the /Library/Application Support/Dolphin/ folder on Mac. Could you maybe link the page where you see how to make the portable on Mac? I couldn't find it

I also encountered this issue. You must have enable write-back cache enabled when initially opening the the CTGP menu, THEN disable it when you've reached the MKW title screen. Trying to launch the CTGP channel with it disabled stops it from functioning properly.

It's super cool that I can run this on Dolphin, but it sucks that I need a decently powerful PC to get good frames.

@@popcatgaemr just play any other mkwii modpack. This is the only one thats effectively wii-only. Lots of people love retro rewind if u dont know where to start looking, but theres like 40 packs out there nowadays, not just CTGP. I also got my own pack called wave kart wii ive beeb workin on if u wanna tive that a look.

So I followed the guide down to the detail, and my game still runs very very slow even in the race. I'm running it at native resolution (also love the OW content, huge sombra main here) any other tips or troubleshooting I can do to fix my issue?

is your computer extremely good? CTGP-R with these workarounds is VERY demanding on a computer. My 3060 was struggling to maintain a constant 60 FPS. if you goal is just to be able to play these tracks, I think CTGP-D would just work better for you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYSriqOZhtKqb7M ^it has every CTGP-R track and just work natively. or my own pack of Wave Kart Wii (which has different custom tracks): kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2nXdJKHj6-shNk

@@szyl I realized that I missed what you said about it being only for time trials. I was trying to do a normal race. It still stutters every now and then but Its playable to me! Sorry for that.

@@nugget23006 I only tested time trials which is why I said that, I didn't even think to play VS mode, I mentioned that in the video more because online play shouldn't work at all. I do think that unless you want to race the CTGP-R ghosts that CTGP-D is genuinely just a better experience though. It has more options available in-game, runs better on emulator, etc. Glad you've been able to enjoy it regardless.

Thank you for making this video, tho it is pretty upsetting how you can only really do time trials and thats it. I just dont understand why Mr Bean and Chadderz wont optimize CTGP for Dolphin, since 50% at this point play on Dolphin nowdays, and I rather enjoy MKW at 60fps at 1080p with no input delay compared to the terrible quality on my Wii U.

they optimize CTGP to not work on dolphin, they are very anti-dolphin as it makes it easy to cheat in online matches

@@szyl I figured, which still doesn’t even make sense since Wiimmfi is fully supported on Dolphin and you never ever see hackers.

@@aaronmk7 you would see more hackers if it was easier to run CTGP on dolphin (and you still see them occasionally), they just have really good moderation on CTGP servers when it comes to hackers and generally manually ban em or catch em with the anticheat within an hour or two. It's a little unfortunate but I can at least understand the logic. There's tons of alternate packs that work fine on dolphin though (such as Wave Kart Wii, the one I work on).

the installer in dolphin kept on resetting after updating ctgp saying something about turning off a "dual core mode" but i cant find that anywhere?

dual core mode is under "Config" then "General", it's the first option. weird that you have to do that lol.

@@garygary6464 there is currently a pack being worked on to get all CTGP tracks in a seperate pack (that should release in the next few days) which is much easier to use and more lightweight, if your goal is TT you can just use that instead (I'll be making a vid when it comes out). Also working on my own track pack called wave kart wii which will go public soon as well if you are a fellow TT enjoyer (I need people to help make staff ghosts lol).

Uhh. Everything in my downloads folder disappeared. I do have some of the stuff backed up, thankfully some important stuff is backed up, but I am not sure what happened. But whats weird is that, I cant see the stuff in the folder, but I know its there. Because I checked the storage space and it didnt change. Edit: I found the folder that all my downloads got into!! My downloads did not get erased :D

Try in Dolphin go to config > advanced > uncheck: Enable Write-Back cache (slow). It worked for me this way.

@@New-Drone Thanks, I did it but finally gave up to multiplayer cause creators from CTGP said they dont like piracy so made it slow intentionally. Tried Mario Kart Midnight and it runs smooth even on multiplayer mode!

@@szyl you should say it at the start in respect of peoples time, and you said to get rid of wiimffi patched iso which removed my data....

@@FinnaDie your data should not be tied to a wiimfi patch at all, a patched iso is viewed as the same by dolphin/real wiis, and even if it was viewed differently I think it should've kept your save data somewhere in your files. What did you do differently where you couldn't find your data? Noone else has had this problem so far. As for saying there's no online at the start, that's fair enough but just not something I thought of when I was making this.
