Fun fact. If you play a Co7 or a Ebo7 or a Gbo7 or a Ao7 and put a D or a F or a Ab or a B in the bass you get a D7(b9) or a F7(b9) or a Ab7(b9) or a B7(b9) dominant chord.

What’s the “o” mean? Is that major?
@Generalbas19722 жыл бұрын
@@Duderino1978 no o is another way of typing dimished chords. so for instance Co7 is a C dim (C-Eb-Gb-A)

Isn't it the exact reason why the "other" diminished scale (half tone-tone instead of tone-half tone) is very often played over dominant passing chords (like the V in usual II-V-I) in jazz solos, if you think about it? The tone/half-tone of C is the half-tone/tone of D, and it lands very very well into the resolution of passing dominant chords.

Pat Martino called this concept "sacred geometry". Also all of those related dominant chords can be subbed for each other! This is how Barry Harris and many of the old beboppers thought of subs.

Maestro, for your advanced students: just as you can with a major, melodic minor, harmonic minor, or harmonic major scale, you can build triads and larger arpeggios with the notes of this scale, and then create lines/patterns using those triads(utilizing inversions and spread triads as well). For(a random) example, using the notes of a C half/whole diminished scale, you can build a major, minor, or diminished triads off of the notes C, Eb, G, and A...The distance between each of these notes, C,Eb,G, and A, is a minor third. Imagine the the interesting lines and melodic motives one could create with those materials... ETA This scale works really well with altered dominant chords, too... Anyway, love your playing and teaching and wish you and your crew continued success!
