when cover the holes that you're covering to play the low A, the note coming out for me is a G. The guy I bought the duduk from said that it was in the key of A, so is it possible that I am not breathing hard enough, or what may be the reason for that?

Hi, There could be a few reasons for this. Your reed may be a G reed, or it is improperly adjusted, with the bridle not being tight enough. Or your duduk may actually be a G duduk. Where is your duduk and reed from?

Hi, I have also bought a duduk and I thought it was A. When I first played I had also similar problem and so I though that it was a Bb duduk. Hower next time I have played the sounds where very close to those from these videos "A" so I have realized this duduk must be A :) I think the reasons may be as the Author described inproper use of reed, maybe you have opened a window :) or maybe inproper covering of holes. I wrote this beacause I am learnig this day is my first day I have duduk and I am experiencing similar problems :) - By the way Thanks to the Author (Mark) for uploading these videos. For me personally they are a great help to start Regards

Probably this answer is to late for you but maybe it can help others. There's two ways to decide the key of the Duduk (as far as I know. Maybe there's more). One is with 6 holes covered (as in this video) and the other with 5 holes covered. The Duduk you bought is probably a G Duduk but the seller used the second method to label it. On a G Duduk 5 holes covered would be A. It's important when you buy a Duduk to ask about this.

Hi Mark, I recently bought a Dudu and can now make a sound on it; however, after I’ve played notes on it for roughly 2 minutes, i cannot make a sound through the reed anymore, it just makes s rushing sound, which I’m guessing is the air escaping from the reed. Is my reed broken or is it a technique issue?

Your reed very new. Just swap reed. Let it dry. Second time it’s will be good for up to 15 minutes. I has same problems.

My dudukreed is too big to fit into the hole of the instrument. Does it hurt to use some sandpaper to make the bottom of the reed smaller?

Hi That's sort of an unusual problem...doesn't sound right. The reed should very easily fit. Did you buy the reed and duduk through a reputable vendor?

I bought the duduk and the reed both in a music-shop in Turkey.

So it would likely be the Turkish version of the duduk. I think it's called a "Mey". Don't know much about those, so i can't really recommend a course of action. Armenian duduks have the bottoms of the reeds wrapped in thread, so you would have to remove all of the thread of course, then rewrap. If you are serious about duduk, I would suggest getting an Armenian duduk from a reliable vendor. Good luck!

I have a problem. Everytime I attempt to play a note, I find myself having to blow into the reed very hard to get a sound. However, when I try to play a little more quietly, all I hear is air passing through the reed. Any suggestions?

Theres more air than sound.

I have no duduk-experience but I play other double reed instruments. One of the things that causes that kind of problem is that the opening between the reeds is too wide. I think they should be around 1.5mm open. You could move the bridle deeper to close up the reeds a bit and then give it a try.

Also try to blow softly but with a LOT of pressure from your diaphragm. Keep your stomach really tight and blow all the way from the bottom of your lungs.

you have to move the bridle (that thing that sits around the reed) down, closer to the instrument.
