RULES:
The object of this gambling game is to win the most bets. The dealer shuffles a standard 52 card deck of playing cards and places it face down in front of them. The dealer takes 13 cards of the same suit from a second deck, and lays them out in front of themselves like so. This is called the tableau. Each player brings their own betting chips and a penny. Kings are high and aces are low.
The dealer begins the game by discarding the top card of the deck face up to the side of the gameplay area. Players then place bets on one of the cards in the tableau based on which card they think is going to flip. Next the dealer flips over two cards from the deck. The first card flipped is the loser and the second card flipped is the winner. Bets on the matching rank of the losing card are lost and collected by the dealer. Bets on the matching rank of the winning card receive a 1 to 1 payout from the dealer, meaning the dealer gives you exactly what you bet.
The flipped over cards are placed to the side face up and another round begins. Players can move their bets around, keep them where they are, or begin placing bets on multiple cards. Multiple players can bet on the same card. Players can also bet on the losing card by placing a penny on top of their chips. If the losing and winning cards are of the same rank, then the dealer receives half of the bets from the matching rank.
Gameplay continues until the deck gets down to its last three cards. During the final flip you have an addition option to bet the exact card order of the last 3 cards. To make this bet, place your chips by the dealer’s deck and declare the order. If a player places a bet on a card that has already been drawn four times from the deck, the first person, player or dealer, who notices can say "dead bet" and they receive those chips.

A very nice video. I'm not much of a card player myself, but have an idea for a book based around riverboat gambling in the 19th century, and found that faro was one of the most popular games of the time.

My book will actually be more of a novel about a gentleman who runs a riverboat casino by day while helping runaway slaves at night, so it'll kind of be like "The Scarlet Pimpernel" meets the Underground Railroad. I'm currently working on an outline for the manuscript, and one of the events that happens is when the riverboat proprietor catches someone cheating at faro by (and please correct me if I'm wrong) placing a copper coin down after the bet was made.

What would counting cards do for someone? It doesn't give you much of an advantage other than having a slightly less chance of losing half of your bet... They didn't mind card counting. In fact, it was common to show everyone the cards that have been dealt.

like Cowbell said - a game needed to be VERY simple ( which was often boring) with cards & dice that were readily available in any situation EG blackjack , craps (which required no playing gear but was played just by throwing dice at a wall !

It's a fast paced game and, if played fairly, has the best odds in the players' favor. However, a lot of Faro boxes in the US were built to allow the dealer to cheat. It was such a problem that the common thought among European gamblers was that there was not a single honest Faro table in America. It fell out of popularity mainly because there was so much cheating in Faro going on, and the fast paced nature of the game made monitoring Faro tables more effort than the parlors and casinos were willing to put up with.

Most “games of chance” suck. You wanna gamble with your money, learn how to invest in the stock markets. The payouts aren’t as big or as fast but if you invest in a really good stock that has been stable for years, you’ll enjoy some good quarterly dividends. Casinos are for fools! When you go into one, don’t even bother to bet on anything. Just give your money to the dealer and walk out. You’re just gonna lose it anyway.
