As kids in the 50's in Bklyn we mostly played against our apartment building wall and we played Chinese handball. In this game the, the ball hits the ground first then hits the wall. It was also called Ace-King-Queen. The sidewalk had expansion lines around every 5 feet so each box was your territory. The first box, the Ace, served and he/she defended the box and if successful got a point. If not, he/she moved to the end of the line. Sometimes we had 10 players. We mostly used Spaldeen balls and occasionally Pensy Pinkies. The ball on the wall did make a sound that carried into the apartments so occasionally they occupant would complain. A few times Mrs Shaipiro would open her window and squirt seltzer at us. We could play all day.

I'm also a 50's Brooklynite and we played Chinese handball also. A player could hit the ball more then once as long as he hit it into his own box, he tried to set up the next shot that he would hit into the opponents box making him miss. Sliced shots were often used as these bounced in unexpected ways and were harder for opponents to hit.

This a deep part of nyc urban culture, my brother in law put me on when I was a kid. Then I grew up and put people on. People outside of ny don’t know what this game is. Back in my brother laws day, everyone was outside and courts were filled. I think today most people spend their time inside so the scene is not as big as it used to be. I appreciate this video brother. Gave me a lot of good memories. I’m about to call some friends up n play

I have to say as a former Queens boy, you gave a great 3 minute video on the basics. Not to quibble I never heard of "Screen Block" we just said "block" and at 2:55 that guy does a wicked Backhand. I notice stuff like that ad My left was week and did all kinds of "trick" stuff to compensate for the week. Did you ever play with Spaldeens?

Used to play every day in Brooklyn on 19th. Street. Handball court and park are no longer there. They put up a school.
