Nasheet really opened me up to the concept of swinging beyond 'swing' and into the realm of open elasticity with forward motion. Incredibly difficult to explain except for...freedom of expression through fluidity. Waits was the first drummer I toured with when moving to the city in 1993-94. We played music together with Antonio Hart and no one gives more opportunities to expand your concepts of rhythmic freedom more. Thanks for presenting this segment for future jazz and creative drummers to to consider.

Thanks so much for this. Nasheet has such a strong commitment in his playing to putting the music ahead of the drums. He is very inspiring.

Studied with Nasheet a few times back in '99/'00.... I was 18 I recorded everything. He had me play "uptempo whatever" and I basically did an Elvin-ish uptempo, a la "Impressions" or "Amen" and he listens, and then as soon as I stop, he asks "So do you just wanna sound like Elvin?" Ugh. Then he - seeing my weaknesses without asking about them - asks me to just play an uptempo jazz pattern with 4 on the floor. "Baby shit" right? I do it, and he's like, "Uh, try this speed" and effortlessly plays around 320 bpm at a roar and at a whisper, comping with the left hand all over the kit, with that bass drum constant, and ranging from FFF to ppp... 18 year old me: [*shit.... I have a lot of work to do*] We spent two hours in our first lesson going over the kind of fundamental things he worked on constantly when he was younger, and me, with my faster-than-everybody's hands but not the kind of confidence and ability with all four limbs, worked on stuff that totally shamed me..... I loved that lesson. I also got Nasheet into more avant-garde music! He asked me who I liked and I named a bunch of artists he said he didn't know zand now he's playing with those guys! 🤣❤️

A few people have sent me emails about this and I've resolved it for them in hours. 8020drummer@gmail.com. And after you're satisfied, I hope you'll permit me to remove this comment;)

Nate - do you feel like you're stealing Nasheet's teachings by using them on the internet to get views and students? Do you think you're using his name to sell your 80/20 thing? One more thing. If you have altruistic intentions, then you should know that people can't appreciate the value what you're talking about the same way they could if they heard it from Nasheet or Ed Blackwell themselves. It believe that it matters where and how they hear it.

Schuyler Asplin How do you steal teachings? Your questions are a tad accusing, might want to re-word.

AquaAnim I was curious to hear your answers to the ideas I was proposing.

AquaAnim is no worthwhile question 'a tad accusing'...?
@schuylerasplin37447 жыл бұрын
AquaAnim and to respond, one thing that could perhaps be considered stealing teachings, would be by taking something that was shared with you, personally, by a master, and disseminating it on the internet for profit, branding promotion, views, etc. I'm not certain that you're doing that, these are just ideas. What do you think?
@AquaAnim7 жыл бұрын
Schuyler Asplin My point is while questions sometimes are accusing, sure. You come off very arrogant, and pompous. Teachings are meant to be shared, if they are never shared then they are forgotten. I will vouch every day for Nate, he has been beyond kind to me. Accusing him of trying to get profit off a lesson is ludicrous. Nate has called me before without knowing who I am, just to ask me questions on how he could improve his teachings, and help me learn more, free of charge. Now without knowing Nate, accusing someone, and harming someones character is crazy. Besides what minimal amount of profit do you think he even makes?
