How to Play "O Holy Night" (Beginner Christmas Piano Tutorial)

One of my favorite little tricks as an educator is to find ways to sneak technique practice into actual songs, and “O Holy Night” accomplishes this goal perfectly.
You’ll improve your chords and arpeggios with your left hand while your right-hand gets to take the melody and improvise!

Seriously, this song was originally written in French. I grew up with it then learned what it all meant. The English is not a translation but still impactful. It doesn’t do it justice, in my opinion. “The entire world trembles with anticipation “ a line from the first verse. Pull up the French lyrics then copy paste into google translate. It might help you get the poetry and impact. My favorite Christmas carol, bar none.

Thanks for this cool video! I have been working on Oh Holy Night as my Christmas song this year. I started on it before seeing your video. I play it with arpegios in the left hand but as G-B-D G-B-D B-G-D B-G-D etc. I play 2 notes at a time in the right hand for the first half and 3 from the E minor on. I'm gonna have to try the accompanying part.

a year later I'm still find myself going back to this lesson. my favourite way to play this song is the accompaniment version. but I mainly stay in root position for the chords. this year I'm gonna work on playing using a few inversions so the transition between chords sounds smoother.
