This is a great instructional video on Othello rules :) Just one point to add on, the top right disc of the starting position should always be black from each players' perspective by tradition :)

@@TroyVan6654 Not true. It can happen rather early in the game. It is called a wipe-out. If you wipe-out your opponent's discs, you win.

If a player has no discs on the board, they cannot play and they lose the game, and the opponent with 100% of the discs wins.

After watching this video, I want to play and challenge my friends in our community. I'm an average player of Othello and still improving and discovering techniques. I guess my only strategy for any other level players like me is to outsmart and use deception concepts just like what I've realized and learn from Saboteur. Great and Unique game because this is the predecessor of my Tabletop boardgames and Puzzles 😁👍♥️🎲🎱🍩☕😃

question: Do you get just once chance to outflank you opponent or can you outflank multiple times (in different areas of the board) during your single turn?
@TroyVan66543 жыл бұрын
You only place down one disk on one turn. That one disk may outflank multiple lines, as shown at 1:04.

but, like..... where are the legal spots to place disks? How can you tell where you can and cannot play?
@mischabronstring58933 жыл бұрын
A legal spot is a spot where your disc-to-be-placed borders at least one opponent's disc, and behind that disc (either horizontally, vertically or diagonally) there is at some point a dics of your colour again. So, if there is a horizontal line BLACK-WHITE and you play black, you can put it on the right of this. If there is a line BLACK-WHITE-WHITE-WHITE you can also put it to the right of it (and flip all three white discs in one go).
@Phoenix-hl5ll3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for explaining the rules
@9adam42 жыл бұрын
Why say that each player gets 30 disks at the beginning? That's not really true if each player keeps making moves as long as there are any disks left. Isn't it effectively just a single pool of 60 disks?

in fact the player going second has a small advantage, since (if neither side skips a turn) they can have the last move.

Thank you! I had an NES cartridge with Othello on it. The last time I played it was probably when I was seven or eight. It was always against the computer, and I couldn't suss out the rules for myself. Naturally, I lost every time I tried to play, because I didn't even know how to try to win. Can I assume that a player cannot "flank" themselves? For example, if the black player places a piece to flank their opponent horizontally, but this placement results in a shape where the white player's already-placed pieces essentially flank the black pieces vertically, the black player's pieces in that vertical line do not turn white, right? If this assumption is correct, then it seems like a good strategy, filling in gaps so it's impossible for the opponent to flank those pieces on that axis.
@longdien9592 жыл бұрын
why at 1:52 we can't flip those 2 white pieces?! i thought they're in same line with last 2?!
