I have a question. It's very strange to me, that the idea of Battleship game can vary, but it would seem like no one knows about it. I checked wikipedia and in polish site version the shortest ship is 1 square long and the longest is 4 squares long (total number of ships is 10, ships must be at least 1 square apart from each other), while in english site version the shortest - 2 squares long, the longest - 5 squares long (total number of ships is 5, they can be close - 0 square distance or more). Neither wiki site says about this difference (however both of them say about variations, like salvo). Do you know why is that? I always played Battleship, where the shortest ship was 1 square long, so when I learnt about version, where the shortest was 2 squares it bugged me. P.S. The only closest thing to Battleship from polish wiki I found was Battleship puzzle from english wiki.

yeah I wonder the same. there is this game on google play that has 3 modes. Standard, classic and Russian which is the version with the 10 ships with the shortest one being one sqare. In my country that is the version we play most. I guess it's just what we agree on.
