How the ball freezes on the flipper on a perfect live catch is magical. slomo guys made a ultra slomo video of pinball flipper live catch. The flipper rubber separates from the flipper at a dead stop just for a split sec then cushions the ball like a baseball glove.

Why should any move be illegal as long as anyone is allowed to?

The rules are what is allowed to everyone. Death saves like at the 2min mark are very hard to the machines, the rules made the move competition illegal.

The live-catch is still debated as to exactly how it works, but all we know is that it's a move that's almost exclusively down to timing. Ultra-slow motion footage of a flipper does give some hints though, namely that the rubber bands around the flippers actually lift away from the flipper bat for a split-second after firing, and that's what cushions the ball.
