The danish variation on this is still my favorite. The basic cards are the same, but instead of having to BEAT a card, you can also MATCH it. Say we have 4 players, and they all have a 3. Then all 4 of the players can play that 3, and the one who puts down the 4th 3 sweeps the table. You also have 10s, which is a free sweep at any point. The same is true of pairs: If one player puts down two 8s, and the next player also have two 8s, they can sweep the table. Jokers have the same function as the 10s.

I played like this too, it makes the game a lot more fun. If anyone completed a 4 of a kind at any time they get a free sweep. For example player 1 plays a 7, player 2 plays another 7. Player 4 has 2 7s and can play out of turn to complete 4 of a kind of 7s, and calls out "social". But p4 has to play his cards faster than player 3 to do it. The trick is taken away and player 4 starts play again. You can do this with triples on singles and vice versa too if you want. I.e. p1 plays 3 7s and whoever has the last 7 can call social out of turn as long as they do it before p2 plays. Or p1 plays a 7, p2 plays a pair of 7s, p4 can complete the social, again, only as long as he gets his card down before p3 plays. It makes the game more strategic because pairs have a lot more value

How do you know when it's time to start a new round; when no player has any higher cards?

round ends only when one person plays and everyone else passes.
