FOR UKULELE PLAYERS: These concepts can also be applied. However since there is no 5th string, you can do a similar pattern like 4,1,3,2

Enjoy your teaching videos. An area I have trouble with is playing bass notes while picking a melody. Picking the bass strings while holding down the scales is straight foward but playing the bass strings while picking a melody is not as intuitive. Any exercises you can recommend that would help me wrap my head and hands around playing the bass strings and picking a melody seamlessly together ? Mahalo in advance

Thanks for watching! And I had the same issue when I first started. I don’t really have a simple answer unfortunately. One method I used when I was beginning was looking at a song step by step and slowly working to add bass in between as I picked. It took a lot of work and time, but it got the job done back then. So I’d try to add in a bass note on every other pluck of the melody (just as an example). I haven’t used that for a long time since I’ve gotten better at playing. The other option would be just to start off playing more slowly and try your best to add them in naturally. Honestly it just takes some time. But I think focusing on more simple melodies at first would be a good way to go. Hope that helps. When I was first taught by my uncle, he told me that he couldn’t teach me how to add the bass because it had become so automatic. I feel almost the same way now because over time you don’t have to think about it anymore. Good luck with your playing🤙

I figured adding bass notes to a melody was a progression sort of thing. I noticed in your Kealoha tutorial that you were incorporating bass notes but never called them out. Thanks for the response.

@@bkmdanochin Yeah I agree. I don’t really know how to teach that kind of thing either. It’s still something I definitely need to improve on but it just takes time. When you watch Ledward play he really keeps the bass steady through the whole song.

Nick ... you do know that in your video lesson on picking and scales that the 5/1/4/3 already gets the thumb accustomed to plucking the bass strings. Just gotta figure out a way to teach the brain how to multi-task and play melody at the same time 🤙

@@bkmdanochin yeah! That is an example of how the bass works while picking the scales. Good luck with the playing
