Right note, however, the first thing you must learn on the lap steel is that you must rest your hand behind the bar to "dampen" and single out the notes and not get ghost notes and other sounds you don't want.

For anyone watching this video in 2024, heed this comment. This is correct. Rest hand behind the bar, and you won't get the unwanted noise of all kinds.

This is great. Been playing for probably 30 years but never really had any success when trying to learn slide technique, at least not that I thought sounded good enough to keep pursuing it. The walk through you do on this video is pretty simple, easy to follow and understand. I think this could really help me expand my playing. Thanks so much!

I enjoyed your lesson and found it friendly and encouraging. Might I humbly suggest you take a review of how you hold your steel? If you mute the space between the steel and the nut many of what I would call unwanted overtones will not ring out. Of course sometimes one wants these but for the most part I find it helpful to hold the steel so my hand covers the strings between it and the nut. it also helps free me up to pull bends behind the steel which can be very helpful with double stops. Thanks, hope I didn't sound too pedantic.

+Nelly Slide Guitar Thanks for responding. If you go to Reverb Nation and look up Don A. Wright from Clovis, California USA Americana style music or roots rock, I forget, there are a couple of examples of my lap steel work. I saw a clip of you busking on one of those laps with the input jack sticking up next to the bridge. I had one and it drove me crazy. I re-drilled and routed the input to the side but I ended up giving the guitar away to a friend.

What are the best strings to use on a lap steel. Brand, gauges, round wound, flat wound? Iv'e just acquired an 1940's Rickenbacher that sounds amazing but it needs new tuning machines, (on order) & strings. I'm totally new to lap steels except for watching Gilmour and would love to get as close to his sound as possible. I've read much online but nobody really spells it out in plain English the specifics. Thanks for the lesson and one day I hope to get as good as you maybe .

Great Tutorial, but if your going to only play the e and b string, whats the point of tuning the A, D and G string up? if you don´t usuallt play slide i mean and want to play this solo over a backing track for example :)

Good point ! It makes no difference....Your right......the filming's often done in 4 or 5 different takes to edit together.....I was concentrating on getting the details correct -the notes, making sure important info isn't missed out. I missed that one! Tarantino and Spielburg can sleep safe tonight then. lol x

haha, great of you to response! Was just thinking about if it makes a difference to the sound of the overall sliding or something (just getting in to sliding) :)
