Twinned is the most overrated but is still the strongest, just not as strong as most people think since you can't hit the same person twice. It becomes pretty useless in boss fights, unless you carry haste or something similar.

The quality of a Sorcerer seems to differ extremely depending on how you build them. If you build it to capitalize on the class's innate strengths and synergize it with your subclass features, your Sorcerer will be REALLY good... though maybe a bit lacking in theme for your sub's flavor. Building a Sorcerer to cover more than one or two bases, or trying to pick the most thematic spells available, and your magic man is liable to suck.

I honestly prefer classes without daily spell prep. Whilst not being that great in a mechanic sense, I think it makes the spells you select say so much more about your character. Also I believe not having to worry about what spells you'll pick everyday is more helpful for new players who don't understand the magic system yet.

Yeah I don't understand the claim that preparation casters are somehow better. Like, doesn't that make them inherently worse, not having access to their spells? Yes, you could theoretically just prepare the ones you expect to need... but what about *when* you're wrong? Not if, when. It will happen, it's only a matter of time. And generally speaking, when that happens, the party suffers the consequences. Not just you.

@@dontmisunderstand6041 what happens when a prepared caster has the wrong spells prepared? the same thing that happens when a sorcerer doesn't know the right spell. Except the prepared casters can come back the next day, or can plan ahead. Sorcerers only learn one spell per level, so a prepared caster will always have access to more spells. A wizard that *never* changes their spells is going to be just a likely to have the right spell prepared as a sorcerer. If you were talking about any other edition I'd agree with you. But when 5e changed casting to "spells prepared" rather than "spell slots prepared" they essentially have wizards all the benefits that sorcerers *used* to have but never gave sorcerers enough to make up for it. Prepared casters are just *better* now :(

The warlock and bard are considered weak? Since when?! That's just a meme, the bard is very versatile, any party would love to have one. The warlock not only gets really cool and unique abilities with their invocations, but they have a huge amount of flexibility when it comes to backstory, and the patron allows for some really cool stuff, that's powerfull both mechanically and roleplay wise. And I actually really love the sorcerer, though that's why I won't try to defend it. Edit: I realize you showed the power of both classes immidiately after I posted this comment.

Elliot Chapman IMO he’s vastly underselling their powers. Warlock has insane blasting potential, sorcerers are incredibly powerful with their meta magic. All the examples he’s given with metamagic are actually really powerful, since you can’t counter them, quicken spell is extremely powerful when combined with something like eldritch blast, and if you don’t have that you can twin a fire bolt. Bards, while on the weaker side, can literally learn a few spells from every class in the game, and their buffing abilities can be used to great effect. Along with that, each of the classes only really has one subclass that falls behind the rest, those being valor bard, wild magic sorcerer, and the undying patron. That being said, early on these guys get the short end of the stick, along with pretty much every full caster.

I personally love playing sorcerer. Sure you may not get as many spells but the metamagic can give you a lot of variations plus the new stuff they added in Tasha's is pretty awesome like the metamagic to change a spell's element. This fireball? Well now its ACID!

Divine Soul sorcerer healers are freakin’ amazing. Twin that Healing Word. And if need be, your Revivify. Then chuck a Toll the Dead as an uplifted middle finger to the baddies. High level? Twin that Heal. Want to lay down the pain? I heard you like Blight. Both of you. BOOYAH to your TPK-happy DM. Downside is that the DS sorcerer doesn’t really hit its stride til 4th or 5th level. Til then you’re either a crap healer who can do a bit of blasting or a healbot that can only spam cantrips for damage due to spell selection issues. But hey, it’s a tradeoff.

The sad thing about monks in 5e is that the coolest monastic traditions (aka Elemental Path and Shadow Path) are kinda weak, but the others are decent enough. Kensei can actually be pretty strong if you know what you're doing.

You can break the one leveled spell per turn thing with two levels of fighter to get action surge. The rule is: if you cast a leveled spell as a bonus action, you can't cast another leveled spell that turn, but with Action Surge you can cast two leveled spells with two actions and not use your Bonus Action. Or if you really need it, you could Quicken a cantrip and get two leveled spells and one cantrip in one turn.

If you want your party to have an easier time healing, make health potions more affordable and a bonus action to drink instead. Perhaps change her magic item to be a pool of, say, 5 points a long rest In there with something like cure wounds being one point and idk prayer of healing or something being 3. There are far more balanced ways to allow her to be a more effective healer without having her completely outshine both the opposition and the rest of the party (assuming they do not have broken homebrew abilities)

I have a goblin shadow sorcerer named Kobbus. My DM turn crazy. It was one of my better optimized character. The secret of the sorcerer strengh is to learn Hight level spell. I once DMed a one shot for some friends. One player was a wild magic sorcerer. They got to the final boss room, and were faced by a group of evil scientists trying to open a portal to a plane of pure desolation and destruction, filled with all manner of voracious and terrifying creatures. They stealthily snuck their way past the guards and were inside the portal room. The rogue began sneak attacking the scientists to try and stop them from opening the portal but it was too late. The head scientist, standing on a platform in the center, pulled the lever as soon as he saw the commotion, and hopped inside a large battle mech. Boss fight! In one turn, the sorcerer stood up from where she was hiding, cast a lightning bolt, and triggered her wild magic. I don’t remember exactly what she rolled on the wild magic table, but it killed all the scientists in the room and downed the boss all in one turn.

With all due respect Jakeypoo, I feel like you're being kind of hard on Sorcerers, and being kind of hyperbolic to try and stress things that really aren't that big of issues. Looking at Warlocks Vs Sorcerers for example, a lot of the spells that are At will are spells you wouldn't really want to spam cast, they're niche utility abilities that you can use freely, or spells that you generally cast ahead of time, which makes a lot of sense for locks to get for free. Telling a warlock to invest 33% of their spell slots into mage armor is kind of insane. Maybe if you're playing purely for damage then a sorcerer could seem kind of flat, but playing a utility caster, and being able to twin cast haste or Phantasmal force and buff or suppress twice as many people at once is incredibly powerful and fun to play with, also giving disadvantage to the saving throw of a spell is incredibly, incredibly powerful given a situation. Slamming a heightened banishment on something really scary just to all but ensure it's gone from the fight can have a massive impact on the outcome of things, and I've never felt as if the Metamagic becomes linear once you figure out which combos you want to use on which spells, because it's still an incredibly fluid system, and the best combo's change based off the level of the spell at times as well. For example, twin casting Banishment can be really strong, but at 5th level it already targets two people, so using a distant cast to grab two important people who are separated, heightened to try and ensure you lock them down, or Extend the spell to keep them out of the fight for twice as long. I dont' know, all the love to you man, I just think Sorcerers are pretty fun if you're being creative with them, and using font of magic to really juice yourself up gives them some serious staying power in a fight.

Pretty much all the casters work better if you do more than just go for raw damage, honestly. It's always been better to try for buffs, de-buffs, ailments, or more clever, indirect solutions, especially if they give other party members an advantage, too. Sorcerers are all about on-the-spot flexibility, and Metamagic lets them turn it into an art form that's not only effective, but also difficult to counter. (thanks, Subtle Spell!)

There is no Warlock vs Sorcerer. You multiclass them together... every. single. time. It how you get stuff like a shadow sorcerer who can see in magical darkness, so you don't give yourself disadvantage with your main subclass ability. Wasting Sorcery points to do that is horrible.

Unfortunately high-level campaigns are pretty rare, and unless you're level 20 s.p's only come back after a long rest. Considering that the most usefull metamagic options cost more than 1 s.p., you don't get a lot of uses out of them. Metamagic is pretty much the only thing sorcerers have going for them, and you run out of it pretty fast.

7:25 or so.. I personally think a fighter that wants spell casting would be better off taking 1-3 levels of Hexblade warlock, crit on 19, regain hitpoints when you defeat the enemy and not to mention hex and eldritch blast.

That's nice but you still need a material component for quite a few spells, so either only use non material spells or hope your captors are stupid enough that they left your staff or crystal orb near enough that you can reach it. Though to combat that i made an object in my campaign, a ring that acts as an arcane focus and lets the sorcerer cast subtle spells without needing sorcery points once in a short rest. After all kidnappers or guards not motivated by wealth might not notice a small ring as much as a giant fuckoff magic staff.

Distant spell and spell sniper work really well together. I use it for a diving soul sorcerer and I have a 60 foot range on inflict wounds.

Quickened Spell is actually specifically *not* subject to the bonus action rule. Which is what it is, it's not per turn it's "no bonus action spell and leveled action spell on the same turn". Action surge is also a valid option to double up

war3 / sorcerer divine heritage x (min3 levels) you cast all the spells from sor+cleric if you take spell sniper feat then eldritch spear 1200' range at will eldritch blasts also inflict wounds as a 60' ranged spell. add in a few terrain alt spells all ranged spell ignore 3/4 cover or less. chill touch works well too. they can't heal the hp till your next round or something to the effect its a cantrip.

He is 110% correct. I'm currently going through my first real game of DnD ever, as a Storm Sorcerer. I'm level 6. As I love the thematic elemental evoker style of the sorcerer, I have to cross-class into Warlock for two levels just for Eldritch Blast, so I can have a thematic single-target cantrip. (An actual bolt of lightning, that way the storm and lightning sorcerer doesn't have to throw random little fire balls at people instead and totally break immersion and feel.) Because *you need to have a single target cantrip.* Which means, for probably 75% of Sorcerers, Fire Bolt. Get Fire Bolt, and make it your Eldritch Blast. You have to spend your slots wisely, so cantrips are going to be your friend. Metamagic can be super effective and fun if you use it in smart and creative ways. It's just that, to use it, you sacrifice a finite resource. The same resource that can let you create new spell slots on the fly, yes, but sincr most games won't go higher than Tier 2, you're gonna get maybe 1-2 new slots per day, if you use very little if any Metamagic, unless you wanna have like ten 1st level spell casts, for some reason. You can also get more sorcery points on the fly, without a rest, by sacrificing spell slots. And before you ask, it's not a 1-to-1 rate both ways. The exception to this, noted with Jacob's final joke, is at *level 20*, you get four points back on a short rest. I.E. 1/5 your total points, good for... a couple meta casts or one level 2 spell slot with a couple left over. At level 20. And only at level 20.

Made a Storm Sorcerer that took one level dips in Bard and Hexblade. Very fun and varied. Booming Blade action, quicken Dissonant whispers, opportunity attack and creature stuck after they stop moving for a turn. Quickened Armor of Agathys followed by cantrip attack. Twin Dissonant whispers, twinned healing word (revived two downed party members same round to turn the tables) and still got to throw a fire bolt. So I would echo the assertion that these CHA classes are made for multi-classing. You can really come up with some wicked combos for every turn. Twinning haste/great invisibility/polymorph, subtle counterspells... Egads!

The Weave is latticed baconstrips! Also I found a cool way to allow sorcerers to learn more spells. It's harder, a lot, but they have advantages a wizard does not. Magical Items can be drained of their magical abilities and the spell powering the ability is granted as a learned spell for the Sorcerer. No a grimoire cannot be drained of it's magic that way, neither will a spellscroll work that way (that's the wizard's, no sorcerers allowed!). This way, by finding a magic item that might be a nearly-used-up rod of lightning-bolts could be of use for the Sorcerer. Perhaps gold/money-value of items are needed, or you need your parental dragon figure to aid in the addition of the power, or hit by lightning cuz storm sorc, etc. etc. But just SOMETHING that allows the Sorcerer to advance in amount.

I guess to the point of sorcery being fun for the imagination and role play aspect, I'm currently playing a kenku wild mage. Not very optimal and pretty chaotic, but very fun. The idea of having a character that communicates by blasting sounds and sentence fragments having high charisma gets me smiling. Plus, I can cast Mirror Image and have four of these lil guys making noise around the enemy. The name he goes by is Ekko, as when casting a spell he tends to mimic the same sound as the spell, having it play twice like an echo. Wild magic is really fun for a silly chaotic bird

My favorite sorcerer gimmick: (may require a lenient DM) 1.) Be an average weight halfling 2.) Roll for cash to buy a lance and shield 3.) at first level learn Mage Hand, and at 3rd level learn Enlarge/Reduce 4.) over the course of two rounds, cast quickened mage hand, convert spell slots to points, cast enlarge on the hand, cast quickened reduce on yourself, you now weight under 10 pounds as long as you were carrying less than 40lbs of gear. Since the hand is 1 size larger than you, you can mount it. Equip your lance and shield, and you now deal 1d12-1d4 damage and have an effective flying speed of 30ft with the slight issue of needing to use your action to control the hand. This is all at level three, 2 levels before you would unlock fly. Note: I’m aware this is not very effective, just extremely funny to pull off.

My favorite little NPC I made is a child sorcerer. She was born with a Divine soul, but she can't cast magic because she has no clue how to do it. She can cast spells without knowing she is and has an affinity for magic...but she's stupid and doesn't know that she's casting spells at that moment. The whole party loves this squishy NPC and adopted her immediately when I introduced her.
