I think there is a mistake with the damage calculation: you add EVERY uncanceled success to the base damage of the used weapon - not only the ones after the first success.

I think for the medicine check you should make it based on the supplies available/imply that a character did their best for now and that’s all they can do for the time being, now rest is required to go back to maximum.

On Medicine Checks - my book says one per week (I'm assuming RP week) to heal critical injuries, although that may be that I have a more recent book than you had at the time of this video.

I respectfully disagree with your house rule on initiative. The way the rules work, the team has to think tactically about what order they go in and attempt to give their advantages, setbacks and narrative changes to the next player in line. It’s actually done this way on purpose to allow the characters to do things to further the story that they can never do in D&D.

That's awesome! The greatest thing about ttrpgs is that you can change whatever you need to fit the fun and feel of your group :)

@@shilohkaneshiro It seemed this was something struggling to understand so was poorly explained. I mean that as constructive as I could, as I actually enjoy your presence in the videos. The slots are done because rounds are Narrative in length. (from seconds to minutes. Not set 3second turns) and there is no delay action. So even if a player goes last in one round, they can go first in the next. Also damage is, you never do base damage. As in books, and even actually explained by Jay Little in a podcast when the game was fresh. It's each uncancelled successes, not net/additional sucesses. So if blaster is damage 8. You succeed the roll. You do 9 minimum. If you roll 3 success in total. It'll be 11(8+3) damage. Not 10 damage(8+2 for the additional success). Tbh, I was surprised when I found out during the beta in EotE, as I did, and few others that it was the additional that add damage. But for fun, I still always struggle with the range bands. If you're able to explain and show examples of tracking it or whichever. That would be fantastic.
@sgklassen
@sgklassen 3 жыл бұрын
@@MutantMaggotX the range bands are as you described the turn length, narrative. The thing to remember about this game is that it is much less a simulation than other, more crunchy TTRPGs. Same goes for Shiloh's final complaint about healing. I think this is not spelled out enough in the source material and also frustrated me initially. A good rule-of-thumb for whenever there is ambiguity: the player should ask the GM, can I do this? For example, what would it take for me to fully recover from my wounds? What is the range to the farthest enemy? Can I use my maneuver to duck for cover in this alley? Players with experience with more crunchy systems need to break the habit of attempting to game the system by exploiting the rules. This game is about story and flow, not hit points and inches.

We use vig initiative as needed, and apply it as needed. Individual or group...and sometimes both if needed. Altering things that the players like makes game more fun for all including the gm. 😁

@@sgklassen it's designed to put the story first and the crunch masked over. The most amazing players have been kids imho. And I have alot of memories of their creative endeavours with this system. My former group were old wargamers and dnd. So when I ran the beta, which I was trying to learn back then, with the erratas pouring out. Yeah it fell apart with them, due to what you stated. Granted back then and even years haha, yes I had always just winged it and got by fine. But it's been that elusive thing that evades the tongue. @R McCoy understandable but that is subjective to the group. A tutorial should be the RAW as best as possible as it's more a broad generalization to whomever is trying to learn, I don't mind side notes for what worked with one group. As it seemed presented was, this what's in the book, tossed out and then the house rule was presented over.

About criting and getting advantages...you need to get corresponding amount of "advantages" in that same attack roll, or they stack from previous attacks? As in, PC is hitting someone with the fist, for example, and need 5 advantages in his attack roll to crit (provided he scored a wound)? So, basically, you score next to no crits on low levels, until you build up a dice pool that is capable of producing 5 "advantages", along side enough successes to actually score a wound, in a single roll? Is that correct?

First I really like your videos. We need more people who are talented like you giving exposure to this awesome system! .....with that said I'm not the first here to point out that in this video you seem to be having issues using the initiative and medical systems. I think this video could use a little edit when it comes to the medical system hot take because I believe it gives bad advice: "Nothing is stopping a player from doing the same check over and over again". The DM does. End of story. This is bad advice as it is breaking one of the golden rules of ttRPGs. Players do not get to roll over and over to reach a desired result. A new GM watching this is likely to become confused by this information and adjudicate rolls incorrectly. FFG is not about the cold mechanics of dice and hit tables. It is meant always to be played with narrative in mind. Why would a player just roll over and over? What would that even represent in game? As a GM it is YOUR responsibility to make sure every dice roll has a grounded narrative purpose. Otherwise you don't allow it. That is not a rule that needs to be written because it is implied throughout the entire book. It's said explicitly as well. Just not directly about medicine checks. A medic attempts to clean and stitch a laceration from a glancing vibro axe blow. He rolls and succeeds. The player marks on his sheet the wounds recovered. Medic player: "So I spend 10 minutes cleaning his wounds, I do a thorough job. I then stitch it up and apply a wrap." "You'll be good as new, we can check it again tomorrow!" Wounded player: "Thanks doc'' DM: "you guys get a boost for tomorrow when you check his wounds again for good rollplay. You must have really got those wounds clean". I don't know what to say about your take on initiative... I think it is the single most inspired part of the FFG system. D&D's initiative is so illogical and stifling. I've been GMing FFG Star Wars and D&D for years. Never once has a player I have played with wanted to go back to the D&D system. I think you might want to revisit how you approach it before you cast dispersions.

Great points! The GM always has the final say for sure, I was just making a suggestion for groups that wanted to homebrew in specific rules if that was their thing. And you're right about initiative, I have since reverted to the original way of running it. It's awesome!

I’ve been GM-int this game for a few years now and have developed home brew rules that make the game less convoluted that my players agree are more fun and true to Star Wars movies. Example: soak. If a character gets hit, subsequent soak value goes down. Because a successful hit will destroy parts of armor minimizing that armors effectiveness. Also in movies, if a character gets hit just once, they are out. They’re dead. Now I don’t give them one and done shots, but quicker gameplay makes the adventure less frustrating and more adventurous.

The FFG Star Wars rules are riddled with gaps and holes… cannot really be played RAW… take the essence of the Narrative Dice and Collaborative Play and just have a great time. Definitely not a rules set for a Simulationist.

I agree with the spirit of this comment but it could’ve been said a little more possibly… The FFG narrative game systems are much more collaborative effort between game master and players than most are used to.
