Oh my goodness! I tried so hard to learn this song on piano. I used white keys only, but struggled. I taught my daughter of 6 years old the beginning of it and within half an hour she got it! I was so amazed. She is 40 now and a beautiful pianist playing by ear.

Keep teaching! The younger generations need to hear this 5/4 beat! 😊

"But don't play it wearing this kind of shirt"--ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the King of the Internet. (Also, love your playing. One of my goals is to be able to play this. Um...should I get a Western shirt to practice in?)

Nice tutorial but I have to say that "Take 5" was written by Paul Desmond who played the saxophone in Dave Brubeck's band. Paul should get credit for this classic piece.

Thanks for the video, Tony! Like. And I’m subscribed. After messing around with this tune on piano, I discovered that the hardest part is to keep track of the measures while soloing on those two chords. I mean, if you play really square lines(it’ll sound more like an exercise) maybe it’ll be easier to count, but if you want to focus on phrasing it’s impossible to count those measures. So when they perform this song, do they have fixed amount of measures for solos(on those two chords) or soloist goes by feeling and when he feels like it’s enough he lets the band know to move on?
@TonyWinston Жыл бұрын
I think they just go on feeling. You're right, 5/4 time is confusing but if you stay at it long enough you start to feel it

Altoist Paul Desmond composed and played the tune - melody, harmony and ad lib (solo). The drummer originally and incipiently came up with a rhythm - in melodic and harmonic isolation. Dave Brubeck, pianist, leader and band "owner", obviously gave tits-bits of advice here and there in respect of arrangements. For many years, Paul Desmond was unheard of and unknown as the composer and alto saxophonist of the jazz-like waltz of the very early 1960's. Paul Desmond subsequently and, yes, consequently went on to record under his own name, thus making him more noticeable, known and renown as a Smooth, Cool Jazzician of "Organic Real Jazz" - NOT of "Generic Fake Jazz", known today as "Smooth JAZZ", a misnomer.
