Im 59 and have just bought my first harp; she's called Morwenna. Wanted to learn the harp since I was young but finally decide its now or never. Want to play folk tunes so I can join with my Border Morris side when they 'jam' after dancing. I've been watching your tutorials for a while and very excited to try putting your teaching into practice. I love how enthusiastic you are and you make me believe I can actually succeed. Thank you.

@jandunn169 I'm playing a Rees Fullsicle Special Edition. It's a great beginner's harp, with 26 levered strings. At around $1600, it isn't exactly cheap, but it's not terribly expensive, in comparison to a lot of others, and it's well made. Actually, I believe it's the same one being played in this video. I have a rental harp which I just named Luna as it is a full moon weekend. She is a Roosebeck Gothic. I started to play back 40 years ago but I was married to a rock bassist and our funds were tight so I returned the harp and stopped my lessons with the future well known harpist Sylvia Woods. (I hired her to play at my brother Marc’s wedding). I feel so happy to go full circle to return to learning about being a harpist. I hope to play as a healing harpist for hospice patients and those in rehab homes. Thank you for this series.

Christy, I will watch your 1-14 lessons over and over until I feel comfortable, and then I will move on to your next lessons. @@nevertoolatetolearnmusic I love Rosa (it's name). It is slow going for me but that is okay; I don't want the pressure that I believe will come with having a private teacher (at my age). Perhaps down the road I'll change my mind, but for now I get really happy when I sit to practice. The harp gives me a sense of peace with its dulcet sound. I sincerely wish you success and happiness with your Troubadour.

Hello Christy-Lyn My husband bought me my harp 7 days ago - for my 70th birthday! Ever since moving to North Wales 7 years ago (is there a pattern here?) we've talked about learning to play the harp. Your online lessons are so encouraging, perfectly paced, and well filmed. Thanks to all your Team. I am autistic and have poor muscle tone in my hands. My thumbs have 'lost' most of the muscle due to carpal tunnel syndrome so any tips on extra exercises would be so welcome. 😀 I loved the three exercises in part 6 or 7 and do not have a favourite. So I play them all. BTW my harp is Henrietta. ❤🎵

I bought a "Fullsickle" (named Pottifer, after a beloved pet Guinea Pig) some years ago, and the day after I I received it, fell and broke my elbow and had other damage too. I got better, but then became my spouse's full time carer and had no time. Then I had another fall and broke the other elbow. . . 2 operations for carpal tunnel, but made good recovery. A neighbour's mother died -- she had expertly played the lap harp with no levers, so the neighbour, knowing I was going to learn the harp, gave it to me: broken strings, but it's a quality instrument well cared for. So: recently widowed, I bought a set of strings for it, and now have 2 harps to learn to play. . . . I'll tune them differently. I'm doing this. (BTW, I'm 75. ) 👍

My name is Dwayne white, also known as DW Blues around the Polk County area. I am learning the heart, and I'm truly enjoying it. It has been my lifelong dream to own a hard when I was a teenager growing up in South Side chicago. I now on a chemic electric lever harp it has 36 strings, just like just like the auto hub that my parents got me when I was 15 years old. That was as good as it was going to get. The old man said to me, we'll get you this, but the other, you're going to have to buy on your own. I was getting too big to play with toys, so I had to play with something. I wanted to learn as many musical instruments as I could, so I started taking up various Musical instruments. We already had a piano. As my musical skills continue to develop, I acquired in oregon, and melodica, and autoharb, clarinet, and Electric guitar. I now play piano, synthesizer, which includes the keytar, the vibraphone and marimba, which I learned in college, along with the upright base. Oregon, colimba, melodica, Arrow phone, clarinet, and flute. I'm on the doctoral program at the University of South florida, I took up the heart last year, because I only had three more hours to take before finishing my course work. No greater time I felt. I was able to get this particular heart from piano alley, which is the music store in the Polk County area. The owner of piano alley, or whom I know very well, had gotten one in. I was the first one that he called when he got it in, because I told him that I was interested in getting one just in conversation, and when he got this one, he didn't have any idea who might be interested. Herbs are expensive. He was happy that somebody was interested, I got it for less than three grand. Most of it I worked off doing engagements and performances with him. I thought about naming it Deborah, after harpist Deborah Henson conan, but decided on Christy. Although this harp like my autoherb has 36 strings, one thing I know for certain. This ain't no Autoharp. It takes much more work to learn this one if I ever Master this thing, it will be instrument number 12. Oh! And by the way, even if I do say so myself, not bad texting for one born with no eyeballs hey?

I just bought a 29 string lever harp on eBay for £65 from Gear4Music as they were selling off one's that were damaged either for parts or repair. Considering they usually sell for £449 (which I know is still cheap for a harp of that size) and the very low level of fixing it actually needs, I think I have myself a total bargain. I haven't named it yet, but it is semi-matte black so it should probably be something Gothic like Severina or Valeria. It was Corrina Hewat who put me on to your videos and I am really looking forward to learning from you. She said you were really smiley and she was not wrong 😀. I have always loved the clarsach since childhood from the first time my parents played Alan Stivell's Renaissance of The Celtic Harp on the record player. Can't wait, thank you in advance.

I've been wanting a harp for about 20 years now, I had a bit of sudden extra money so I decided that I didn't want to wait another 20 when I could have been playing for just as long. It's an impulse purchase in circumstance only. Primarily interested in it to play Irish and Manx music, but I'm also interested in using it in more experimental ways as well

Hello Elaine, I have heard that the health of a society can be measured by how many harpists there are. Let's keep this global harp community growing! There are volunteers in some USA hospitals that play their harps for people recovering from heart surgery. One is in Philadelphia I think. I have watched several videos regarding this as well. May you and Song Bird bring healing to many! Local old age manors and hospital chronic wings are a good place to play, even as a beginner. I will be bringing my harp into the chronic wing where my Dad is and letting him play on the instrument. - and others in the common room if they want to. I am just learning, but will play for them as I progress in the beginner phase. I also feel that when we decree Divine intent while we are practicing or playing a piece that the healing vibrations be sent to those calling and in need, they will be received. We make a difference with every blessing we send out.

Could you please go over the basics like what is a good harp to buy, how many strings we should get, what is a good tone wood, what is the difference between a "heather" harp and a "celtic" harp plus any other types, what is the difference between a plain harp, a lever harp, and a pedal harp and any others we should know about, do harps come in specific keys; if so which is the best key to get, which are the best strings to get nylon or metal, and any other basic information. 🤔 Thank you. 🍃

Congratulations on your new harp! Heather Grace is such a lovely name 💚 Harpsicle stands are designed for their harps so it's hard to say for sure if it would fit yours (I'm assuming it's the Roosebeck Heather harp you have?), but what I would do is contact the manufacturer of your harp and see if they have recommendations for you!

I am really excited to get going and each day seems like a year of waiting for it at the moment lol.

I have been playing drums and percussion for 6 years now and I always wanted to know how to play an instrument that can play a melody (does that make sense?). I was thinking about maybe playing guitar or bass then i remembered how my sister struggles with her guitar so nope. Maybe piano or marimba? nah, my brain too dumb for that for some reason. But I saw a lil harp in my school orchestras storage room last week and i thought "huh this looks playable to me... no confusing #- or b-notes". soo now i'm thinking to rent that harp and learn how to play it because it just sounds so elegant and calming, perhaps the opposite of a drumset lol

That’s great! The only challenge is that harps (even beginner ones) are surprisingly expensive. If that’s an issue, maybe take a look at Fireside harps. The soundboard is cardboard, but can be replaced and I’ve heard of it lasting 20 years no problem! That would take you through beginner playing, and could be a nice portable harp afterwards. If you have more of a budget, I would recommend a Ravenna 34 from Dusty Strings - it’s easier to learn on a floor harp (one that has legs). That would be a longer term investment and you could go as far as you want and even get to an advanced level on that one without needing to get another harp.

Hello! I'm planning to buy a lyre harp first then perhaps a small harp. I think I will learn to play the lyre and play it like a harp first, with a harp technique. Do you advise this? Do you play the lyre, too? I am planning a beginner planning to buy a 19 or 24 strings lyre. I have always wanted to play a musical instrument which is light enough to be carried around, and which might also serve to accompany my leggero sounding voice. I watched a few of your lessons and hope to continue once my lyre harp arrives. I am even planning to put some telltale red and blue paint (nail polish paint perhaps) on the C and F strings of the lyre because lyre strings usually don't have those colors.

Hi! There is another style of harp playing where you play with your nails, usually with wire strung harps. It gives a more metallic, old style sound. The technique and hand position is quite different so you would have to learn from a teacher who knows that technique, or try to figure it out yourself. Good luck!
