i think most people have a rough time with shotguns since they expect them to be like any other game where the pellets spread randomly through the whole reticle, here having a very tight spread makes it easier to miss most of your pellets

In other games you typically have the time for a second shot even on the pumps. Which makes them pretty forgiving. However, hunt has a near nonexistant ttk if players preform well, so uh....

I found this video a month late, but one tip that I'll have with shotguns is that you don't want to be too close. I've had moments where I've jumped down, the guy has his back to me, and I have my shotgun through him and somehow miss. Not sure if it's a hitbox issue, but I've gotten a video of it missing point blank. If I had been a step back, everything would've worked out fine.

That's strange. Specter is easily my most reliable shotgun. It just works! Crowning King tho! Enemies always one tap me, while I'm over here triple-tapping with a prayer. The thing just shoots confetti.

Crown is nice when you wanna fulfill like a close range version of the squad weapon gunner role. If you want high lethality sustained fire in the fatal funnel you can bring a crown and a high capacity sidearm like a chain pistol with bleed, dolch, or bornheim extended (fanning ideal on the chain pistol). You can take control of rooms very effectively if you play angles and your teammates understand how to clear things by just being able to get that fire superiority during the intial engagu. Very good weapon.

Spectre was never an issue for me, always did feel it was a solid shotgun but I suppose that may be because I was aware of the tighter spread on it. The rival though, you do show its strength but yet I'm going to be the stickler and point out that there were many times you landed the first shot but then the second shot didn't connect resulting in an extended fight. Granted, it doesn't make it hard to fire two shots but in those tight peek fights, landing can be nearly impossible. I guess my other main gripe about the rival is the lack of ejector for a full reload, you can see it on the model but it doesn't use it; makes reloading it feels a lot more clunky than other shotguns. Though with this new knowledge I will do my best to try and apply it and see how the rival works out, and if it doesn't then maybe the rival just doesn't work for me because we all have those guns that just don't gel (Martini Henry and Sword combo for me works FAR more than it really should). And obligatory: Hey that's me in the funny youtube man's video! Welp, that's my 10 seconds of fame! Though surprised it resonated...I run into a lot of Rival users in games...though I suppose slugs should be DQed I guess!

Afaik, it used to be that Rival reload would utilize the ejectors but it was a straight upgrade from Romero with very minimal downsides so they nerfed it. This might be a "phantom rumor" though, I wasn't playing the game back then and I don't remember from where I heard about it.

@@MadameRouzgar You are correct. You can actually still find some old footage floating around, too. Honestly the old reload looked kinda jank if you were in the middle of a firefight. Like the shells weren't launched out so much as a pop and float with some hang time in between.

The issue is that people think the crosshairs are indicative of the spread. So they don't perfectly center the crosshair, and they end up getting an arm shot and then wondering why they didn't get the one tap. Honestly not the fault of players, Hunt devs have never gone out of their way to explain ballistics, spread, etc.

Its the firerate for me like hornet mentioned. Why should i use a weapon which shoots the slowest and has a long reload with bulletgrubber. I personally prefer the slate far more.

@@BlackWolf9988 Even though it's preference, the reason for going spectre is that it's more consistent. It's part of the long barrel shotgun family, the slate and rival are part of the medium barrel shotgun family. There's more range, damage, and tighter spread with the spectre which will give you more consistent one taps if your aim and flicks are good. In 6 star MMR you don't really see shotguns that much, but when you do, it's a spectre or crown&king since people don't really miss and rarely need a follow up shot with a shotgun in close range. You will see the slate with slugs however. It has a quick action and a nice iron sight for aiming those slugs. But the rival and slate with buckshot tend to be passed on.

I find shotguns in HUNT not very consistent, sometimes I clear rooms and shoot people from distances you showed in the video but other times, I hit them center of mass like 4 times and they don't die ! My last engagement was with a C&K and I had to shoot a guy 3 times with it before he finally died when I already hit him once with a Caldwell PAX... (and didn't heal)

Hey Hornet, did you know if you get Necromancer in quickplay (meatheads can drop it), you can use the self-revive? Doesn't help if the person that killed you would be the last one on the server though, as you stand up with a second left to kill them, I don't think you can even get a shot off in time

The rival with flechette rounds are nasty as a solo. They cause so much panic, they're accurate and have good range. I've been playing rival flechette with sparks pistol, and it's an absolute blast.

Now that's some epic clips! Btw I do wonder now with the Drilling out, how much of the Rival's role do you think it can replace? At least it greatly takes over the two tap range potential, and it of course has better one tap potential with the one shot. Still definitely room for the rival though with two quick shots that both could one tap at closer ranges ofc, price aside.

got 1600hours in the game, always hated specter.... after i saw hornet one shotting nearly everything with it, i gave it another try... its now my favorite basic shotgun to pick :) but only the standard version, i never managed to one shot somebody with the bayonet version terminus is always very weird for me, when in close range i never manage to one tap somebody but as soon as they are on max range, i one shot nearly everyone with it...

Bayonet has the rival spread so that makes sense. But yeah, Specter is arguably the strongest shotgun in the game. C&K may have the better fire rate but who needs fire rate when your first shot kills them.

Slate has (at least in my expirence) a way better spread pattern than the rival so it will onetap more often and since it has a high rate of fire you can 2-tap more reliably than with rival

@@nickmclean4004 as said my experience with the slate (buckshot) i quite positive. Ofc its not a specter or a romero, but it usually will work just fine. Now my experience with the rival is only negative. Rarely will onetap and often enougth not even 2 tap (ofc i wiff sometimes but with other shottys it works just fine). Its range is abysmal and if you dont onetap your opponent he will onetap u (given you dont get to fire your second shot but thats the case often enougth). Also having to reload after just 2 shots is bad especially since it usually will take 2 shots to take one down

According to the new stats the shotguns are supposed to be better than they are. All the shotguns expect for the Romero and the medium variants would one tap out to 12 and never further. Now thanks to the new update you can see the actual stats of the guns and see that the devs were lying or shiny it. The reason the specter kept one tapping way more reliably than the rival is because the specter didn’t do 185 damage like it used to say. It actually does 210 and has a 14 m one tap range. But I could never one tap past 12 so since it says that it actually one taps further than before, shouldn’t the guns be more consistent and reach further??

The spec drifts the least of shotguns, all shotguns do the same barrel stuff damage, the damage calculator and effective rage calculator gives the best RNG. Across all pellets, the best RNG is SUPER rare.

ADS does not tighten the spread, this applies to all shotguns in the game the only exception is whenever your using slugs.

I wish buckshot wasn't as bad as it is currently. I still think if you're taking a shotgun slugs are pretty much mandatory if you want to kill someone past 5m away (except the romero)

I would disagree actually. If you already know about it, then we can agree to disagree, but most people who don't like buckshot usually seem to be fooled by the hipfire reticle. There's a video about it (it comes up when you put "Hunt reticle lies" in the search bar) and knowing how the reticle and the buckshot spread exactly work made it pretty easy to get one hit kills with buckshot for me at farther ranges.

@@MadameRouzgar I know about the recticle being smaller than it actually is , thats why I do try and ads with shotty's. But even then, shotguns past 10m are pretty much useless. Long ammo is still the king unfortunately, being able to do 149 dmg out to 40m to the chest for 130 dlrs is insane. I see way more people running long ammo than shotguns.

@@trapper69420 meta long ammo hides mistakes more, imo. Velocity helps accuracy, dmg range helps with poor/difficult rotations, etc. Nothing is bad or wrong with running meta stuff, I just feel other weapons require... more... to be effective.

Not sure if people would enjoy the game if it were too realistic because then most guns would feel the same because you would 1-2 tap with every primary. Of course, there might be a niche for a hyper realistic Tarkov style western shooter…but Hunt probably isn’t the best platform for that kind of gameplay.

I think in general the double barrel isnt that good, the fire rate is aggressively good though. Its just not consistent sometimes you need it to land, here you got away with it but sometimes the double barrel betrays you.

I have a question to all game devs out there, y do shotguns have random pellet spread it doesnt make the game better in any way. Like if shotguns are to strong because they one shot to consistently then nerf the range and dont make it a 50/50 gamble if you are gonna kill someone who is in the one tab range listed in the store

While it has random pellet spread, in Hunt, buckshots reliably one tap at max range as long as you hit center-mass with the center of the reticle. The spread is much tighter than the hipfire reticle suggests and it is always centered (no sway as long as you're not aiming).

I am not a dev but it might not make for a very novel experience in an fps game if your weapons behaved that realistically. (Some gamers do actually enjoy that level of realism though) The shotguns and rifles would reliable one tap enemies and the pistols would be useless en comparison because realistically most handgun calibers are weak compared to rifles and shotguns. Basically, the game would be who hits first. That might not be as enjoyable an experience for a casual player in an arcade FPS. The meta would be rifles and shotguns, much like real gunfights.
