I had the good fortune to have a drum kit left at my house for about a year, 30+ years ago. I learned as much as I could as fast as I could (mainly jamming to the live Skynyrd album One More From the Road) and really haven't played since...I play Bass in a band now and the drummer wants me to play the kit for a couple tunes (while he sings). This lesson was great! Thanks man. Trying to get back in drum shape again.

The oldtimer is back - great lesson! I love the shuffle, it is truly useful in blues, which is what I have been playing the most. I won´t post the link (when I have posted links before, the comment get erased at once), but for a good example of badass shuffle, check out the "Swedish ZZ-top": Sky High and their song "I ain´t beggin´". In the studio version, the beginning is kind of "sterile" up until around 2:20. Then they have a short break, and the shuffle starts. And all hell breaks loose. With the shuffle, suddenly everything fits. 😘 For both drummers and drivers out there, please listen to this song sitting behind your computer. If you happen to drive, your leadfoot will likely "just be there" and you are suddenly driving 180 KMH...

This is really helpful and you gave me an idea!And by the way those toms sound sooo fat and punchy! Is this because of the mic, tuning or the shells?
@ThatSwedishDrummer Жыл бұрын
All the things you mentioned play a factor in sound. The core sound is from the tuning. But the room, the shell, the drum heads, the playing-style, the micing etc. play a big part in how any instrument sound 🙌

@ThatSwedishDrummer Жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% sure I understand what you need help with, is it the half time shuffle? I'd gladly help out, but I always recommend - practice reeaaaaally slowly (and I mean ridiculously slowly), and gradually increase the tempo to analyze where the problem starts.
@warburtonpaul Жыл бұрын
Very kind of you to reply. I am trying to learn the groove to Return to Sender by Elvis for one, and yes, I have reduced its speed to around 80%. I'm guessing it's around 118bpm when played properly. But progress is hard going. Currently, just playing to a metronome between 100-105bpm. @@ThatSwedishDrummer
