The more music you can absorb the better understanding you will develop on how the inversions are used. If gospel is your desired style to learn listen to and practice these songs.

Mannnn do I need help . I understand FACE when I was young but I just don’t seem to get intervals & Melody to a song 😢. I play chord and I probably need to go back and learn chords . Maybe your hymnal is different...just saying 😅 in our congregation, we sometimes, use "substitutions" for notes and chords to enrich the harmony and melody, and that's OK. We worship in spirit and truth.
