Just making a friendly point of correction @12:30; Controllers work perfectly fine from my experience. You just need to go to the game properties for the game in question (right click on the game in the left hand panel games list and click properties) and select "force off" in the "Steam input per-game" drop down. I even use dual sticks in Star Citizen under Lutris and they work fine with the right config XML file. Only thing that doesn't work are the throttle sliders, but that is probably because there is no entry for them in the XML file I use. Anyway, ever since switching to Linux completely in 2016 with a VFIO/GPU passthrough VM for Windows games, I now only buy games on Steam that have or are expecting native Linux versions or ports. I do have the odd 1 or 2 games that aren't Linux, but they tend to be ground breaking work of art type games; things like Nier Automata before it went Linux native. Other games are things that I get free with AMD GPUs or CPUs. I don't use GoG (unless it's a Linux native game) and will not use Epic or anyone else outside of Valve or now Stadia because I feel we Linux gamers should vote with our wallets for companies that are working to improve Linux gaming. Same thing with hardware, I will spend $1000 on a 4K Magewell capture card rather than switch to Windows and use a $300 AverMedia 4K capture card, because AverMedia do not support Linux in their hardware.
@fymlinux5 жыл бұрын

Buying on GOG in 2019 is usually a mistake. I love their anti-DRM, pro-consumer ethos, but if they won't support an OS that lets me extend that philosophy to the rest of my computer, I'm not buying. I plan to rebuy The Witcher 1-3 on Steam after Christmas.
@elr775 жыл бұрын
@@danielstevenson3903 Yeah, there should be a bunch of great sales on Steam after Christmas; think I got all 3 Witcher games at the same time a couple of years ago. Honestly, I personally believe that anti-DRM thing that GoG use as a selling point is slowly washing away. Games are changing and the way games are delivered is changing. There was a video I saw a few weeks ago by this woman talking about Half Life Alyx and (based on her conversations with developers and studios) how it is an indication of what is coming and how the way we play video games will change. There are so many things changing and moving quickly that Stadia, XCloud, and others are probably the way things are going. People in time won't care about DRM if they are paying a subscription for entire libraries of games like MS GamePass and Ubisoft are going to roll out on Stadia and elsewhere through Uplay. We can also assume Valve will launch something too and Amazon are probably going to release something of their own and my gut tells me Star Citizen and Squadron 42 (see the video: "Squadron 42: 2019 Visual Teaser") will be the poster child of anything Amazon roll out. On top of this there will probably be more services like Shadow for gaming via cloud computer instances to reduce local hardware requirements, it is only a matter of time before gaming becomes a Netflix type model and only the super enthusiasts will build high end PCs. In fact, AMD in their ray tracing road map talked about could computing based for full ray traced scenes in games. But we'll see how GPUs and software development progress.

1. Dual boot. 2. Virtual Machine. I am a Linux only user since 2005. But for some media software, mostly Adobe I always will need my windows somehow. They all reside in my virtual machine since years. Advantage over dual booting: - you can stay in your main OS for other tasks while doing your Media work. -you can keep your files on your main machine and make them just accessible for your virtual machine. This helps you to keep the image size of the VM small, just OS and apps. You can always access your files if needed.

@marcelocortez33124 жыл бұрын
I doubt about Proton, though I never ran it because I use Windows for playing (the only reason why I use it lol). I wasn't aware of how Proton works, but as I watched your video I realise it's pretty easy. I may give my Arcolinux a chance to play.

Heres a question for people that do use Linux for gaming - If, as has been attested, that there is a performance hit from using an abstraction layer to run non-native games in Linux, do these performance hits only matter in say FPS games or multiplayer games? I tend to play mostly single player RPG-type games (though I do play Fallout 4 and Metro 2033) and if it mostly doesn't matter for those type of games then I'm actually way more inclined to make the great leap into Linux. Also, it was sort of amusing to hear you say use the higher number for the Proton install and then proceed to pick 4.11 over the 4.2.
@fymlinux5 жыл бұрын
Great question. In my experience, it's been on a case-by-case basis. I believe the way the game was made (and which engine was used) has a bearing on performance in Linux. Aside from benchmark test videos, my best advice would be to buy/install a new hard drive on your PC, install Linux on that, and try it for yourself, so you can see what your experience would be.

Most games will run like they do on windows. Provided u have ur install set up properly. Dont use play on linux. Lutris is the go to. Enable dxvk and escyn if u dont u will have a shitty experience gaming on linux. Also check ur ulimit should be 54288 around thier if not. System is not ready for gaming. To check tuun ulimit -Hn

Using the newest proton all the time is not best. Some games run better using an older proton or custom proton. Such as mesa-aco

The only issue I've had is with Monster Hunter World where the game won't recognize my Xbox controller at all. I've tried tweaking Steam settings like big picture mode & Gamepad profile, and even reinstalling the controller drivers in Linux. Out of all the Windows games I've played on Linux Monster Hunter is the only one to have the controller issue, so I continue to play it on Windows.

Haha awesome! I just got rid of mac os catalina on my old 2012 mac mini and replaced it with Kubuntu Linux. Im so gonna try this out on some of the simple games I have on steam thanks! I cant wait till the day where I can fully ditch windows even on my main gaming pc.

Ok this was helpful but I know nothing about Linux, I have recently built a new gaming pc and have always wanted to try Linux but the gaming side always put me off. My old gaming pc is an I5 with 16gb of ram and a Nvidia GTX 970 gaming card so is more than capable of running most games. So for me this is the right time to try and learn about Linux and see how I feel about it and see if i can get some games working with it. So just some questions what is the best Linux distro for gaming ? then I take it I need to download the steam OS or is that an OS in it self ? does proton automatically download when you install games from steam ? I am so confused ATM so any help would be great and thanks in advance.
@zair16044 жыл бұрын
I think if you're going to play games on Linux go all out and play native games sense there is 6500+ native Linux games that work perfectly out of the box. I do get the point of wine, Lutris and proton its just better to provide support to the developers that actively chose to work on the Linux platform. instead of finding work a rounds.

And it worked seamlessly for you out of the box? The Proton listing shows a lot of intermittent behavior results: you have to put in some prefix text to the launch options, and run it lots of times to get the auto-patcher to work successfully, in my experience.

Are there any performance advantages to using Linux over Windows? I personally have no use for Linux but if there is a performance advantage that makes sense for the extra work of setting this up I'd be interested.
@raddisonwatson33344 жыл бұрын
3 gb of ram freed for a starter no more MS background spyware wasting resources and selling your personal data without paying you a dime. Greater control over the os interface and functionality. Almost no viruses, similar to mac in that regard. If you're careful you'll be fine. Far greater performance overall, less 'services' hoggin your processor and slowing down your boot and hogging memory. But I think most people switch these days because windows has gotten so much worse with 8 and 10. I hear the weirdest comments from fairly smart people about how bad 7 is, the discontinued support leading to slowly building incompatibility, which will start affecting more users over time, but it's a relative issue. It's the only thing. If you assume new is better because new, you're fucking moron. Just look at what's happening to user interfaces with multi-spring loaded menus, games that barely work and the xbox one dashboard, or the strain of the windows update that came with Windows 8/10. Software is improving in some ways, and degrading in others, all for profit. MS seems to have stopped trying. If you have a windows 10 device in your house it will update other machines on your network to it. There was a story out about a hospital that was effectively shutdown from this a few years back but I can't find it, I suspect the MS legal team got onto that. There are other benefits. But this isn't for someone who isn't very tech savvy. If you're gonna complain about it being difficult save yourself the trouble.

Mario is right, check this out: www.protondb.com/app/443110. Unfortunately, not all Windows titles are working, but a VERY large number of them opened up (compared to the native ports of Windows titles) when Proton was released. And more and more are being whitelisted with each new version of Proton. If the game you're looking to play isn't seamless just yet, give it some time. :) Still lots of good reasons to have Linux on your computer.
