This new branch of destroyers is now in early access since the launch of update 0.10.3 and while technically destroyers they fall more into the category of a hybrid between destroyer and light cruiser. This ship is good. Coming from the previous Gaede, it can take a little adjustment as there is no hydro, but what it is is a tanky boat able to dish out good gun damage and some decent, if slow, torps.

If you like its playstyle, just play the british light cruisers. They are better and the most immportant part is that they dont take up a DD spot... really confusing DD line..

Haha I think the line about struggling to find "the edge" or any redeeming factor sums this up. From what I've seen in battle and online even the Shultz, where the line starts to get better, is a one trick pony and detrimental to the team's chances. You lose a DD to gain a poor man's cruiser that's not as good at farming BB's and cruisers than the ships designated to do so. Possibly the Elbing will turn out to be a monster making the line worth grinding but I find the whole concept really strange.

Still got a while to go until I unlock this one (if all else fails, I think I have enough XP on the Gaede), so until then I'm going to watch what gameplay there is, assess her strengths and weaknesses on the basis of that, and fit it into whatever role she seems to fill best, WG's stated goal notwithstanding.

Problem with the AP is that WG gave them improved pen angles so on cruisers and dd's they will just overpen constantly. Got to admit you still manage to stay positive about this ships when every other youtuber has done nothing but slam it for how terrible it is, HE has less DMP then some tier 1 cruisers, AP has less DPM then most tier 5 dd's and torpedo dpm is the same as most tier 4 dd's thats only if you can land every torp every time they are reloaded in a tier 7 ship that will be facing tier 9's is horrible. Really think WG were very very drunk when they came up with this one.

This is certainly not an easy line. I do like the guns with their accuracy and damage, but I feel that the ships lack enough versatility to be truly effective. Really they shine when firing at range, but compared to other DDs they are sluggish, slow firing and easy to spot.

I have done citadels on cruisers in the Z-31, but most games just end in either getting blapped because you can't maneuver like a DD should, or you get absolutely humiliated up close and personal by another DD because... Yeah same reason. It's basically as you said, a light cruiser. But that just means the team loses a nimble DD. It's not a 'much maligned' destroyer, it's just a destroyer that got nerfed far too much. Terrible torps, slow reload, feels so sluggish my Vermont is almost nimble by comparison. Also, question, Carbine. Why do you have your AA off if the range and air detectability are identical at 3.5km? It's not like you're gonna shoot at them when you're undetected by planes. Thanks for the content, it's nice to hear an adult's approach. ;)

Just a habit of turning it off on most destroyers, it just becomes second nature even if it isnt always the right choice

It's not the worst DD in the german line but hidden hard mode you unlock after mastering every other DD.

Z31 is easily one of the worst new ships I have ever played. But I like peculiar ships and even though playing it is misery at times, I enjoy the satisfaction of making bad boats sing.

You seem to be playing really well in this video, did you find that all your games you were able to manage respectable performance like this or is the ship as bad as other CCs are saying? You seem like an optimistic guy, so I'm guessing this plays a part, but I'd be interested to hear! Love your videos btw! Your vids have played a big part in me starting to play WoWs and getting into it quite a lot the last couple of months!

It's a tricky line to be sure. I've played a lot of games in gunboats so I'm comfortable with the gameplay but there are much better ships in the line for sure. It's not a bad ship it just feels very ordinary is all

This is not reliable, every test like this is always with full skills and 21 stars commanders, which doesnt correspond at all to our experience.

It might not correspond to everyone's experience but it shows what the ship is capable of when fully trained. If I show it with a low skill captain viewers will think it's weak and uninteresting. It's a tough ship to play with low skills but this goes for many ships in the game.
