This video continues our solar panel journey by exploring pole mounting, and adding a new 200W panel to our growing home solar setup.
I expected this to be a relatively short and simple video; however, as you might expect if you’ve watched my previous solar videos, things don’t go exactly to plan. Are my troubleshooting skills up to the task?
The mount I used is from Renogy: www.amazon.com...

If I have money, I would give this guy $1000 for saving me the grief of installing solar panels in my backyard. This is the first guy to show cruel honesty. I am glad you did not give up, or filter the video to make you look like the master of the universe like any of those other KZbinrs. I wish you success brother!

In addition to Senor Squirrel and 'Hercules Poirot's' input, this was a very enjoyable video. Learned a lot not only about a solar panel installation but how to erect a pole....I'll be doing that this spring. I may have a few more 'colorful comments' though!! Thanks...good job. Wish you were my next door neighbor!

Believe it or not, that pea gravel does an excellent job of holding posts if you fill the space with it

Do you mean just use the gravel and nothing else?

@@improveandachieve6047 yes! You put in a few inches for a bed, then pour the rest around the post. By the time it gets close to the top, the post is unmovable. It has the advantage of not putting caustic chemicals on the wooden post, and being able to drain water easily. I had dug up fence posts that were buried for years with no rot.
@davidwilker4795
@davidwilker4795 24 күн бұрын
@@improveandachieve6047 Yes, just set a bed of gravel in the bottom of the hole like you already did, then place the post in the hole and make it plumb. Fill the remaining space with the pea gravel, and by the time it is half-way filled, the post will be immobile. I have removed old posts done this way years earlier, and they are solid. It has the added benefit of NOT having caustic chemicals like cement, and will drain much better.

Residential solar sounds good - - no more electric utility bills. BUT there is a reason there are large electric generating plants - - economy of scale. They, the utility companies, are portrayed as just large greedy monopolies out for profit for themselves. However, as many homeowner/solar enthusiast are finding out there is more to the "solar dream" than simply putting us a few solar panels and tying them into a do-it-yourself power plant. There are batteries that will have to be replaced, cut backs in power usage in the residence and those dreaded cloudy days. (*There are more negatives but . . .) The monthly electric bill comes in the mail, you pay it and continue on with life. If the bill seems to high, maybe the first thing to do is investigate where all the electrical power is being used. Residential solar has its place - - - > emergency backup. It's quieter than a gas powered generator. :) Solar power production has come a long way and the future may hold better battery design/chemistry; better power producing solar panels. But from my view, right now, dependence on that large electric generating plant is the best and proven way to go. THANKS for your solar panel installation video and your down-to-earth reality check. Have a blessed day.

Thank you for watching and for your thoughts! Great points about the ease of grid power vs. a home setup. And I agree with you that one place for residential solar is to temporarily replace a generator in an emergency. For me it's just been a passion project and something I've enjoyed learning about, but without a doubt it's cost me more than it's saved. The payoff period for residential solar is still too long. But as with all things, the price will decrease over time due to those very same economies of scale and maybe in 10 or 20 years it will make more sense for the majority of people.

Thanks so much for the video. You did a very good job and should consider to keep going whether or not on solar I don't know. Love the shirt and squirrel. Sorry you have to feel sad with the dissolution of the solar industry. Way to much government money pushing a narrative that the industry is a lot farther ahead than it is.

Thanks so much for watching and for the comment. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I think you said it correctly. I love renewable energy and solar in particular- it's just still a growing industry with a few obstacles to overcome. It's really great technology as long as you manage expectations.

I think I would have just lagged the 4x4 to an existing fence post and offsite the mount to my side of the fence.

Good question, I wasn't sure myself how it would do. I can say that it has survived a winter with blizzards dumping a few feet of snow, strong winds, golf ball sized hail, and a summer with plenty of 90-100 degree days. Still rock solid after the better part of a year. Can't say if it'll stay like that forever, but so far, so good.
