How to polish aluminum : pressure and technique

In this video Evan from Evan's detailing and polishing in Chilton Wisconsin breaks down in what difference pressure and overlap makes in metal polishing. Arguably one of the most important parts of polishing any metal. The desired finish always comes from those 2 key factors. First and foremost this is the one thing I try to teach everyone to work on when they first get started. Of course personal preference is always key. As you will see in the end of the video you will find that no matter what the pressure level is that if you overlap properly and color correctly, all pressures can achieve the same finish in the end. But that is only if done correctly.

The average person, me, after taking off my aluminum wheels from my truck that has sat out for two years in snowy winters can really appreciate the skill, and technique needed to do a really good polish. Had to sand down the grit yesterday and will go polish today and have better results hopefully!

Nothing is more destructive on a grinder than using it for buffing purposes.. when I was a kid running out to Cali & back to the midwest I asked the Mexican polishers to show me how to polish like they did and since I wouldn't be in their area stepping on their toes they agreed to do so. However they didn't tell me that you better buy a good Dewalt or Makita grinder.. I got back and was going to polish up a few drivers trucks for extra cash .. I bought a craftsman grinder which was smoking within a hour, bought a Milwaukee which was smokin in a few hours and then I went and bought the big Dewalt which lasted for years.. I don't polish for a living but every truck I've driven has been shiny from my hard work and I worked for a small company that would pay me my hourly driving wage to polish up their trucks and trailers.. I made some decent side cash from them and farmers around wanting things polished including motorcycle, snowmobile parts etc along with rims and whatever was aluminum, stainless steel, brass copper etc..

Other polishers move the machine randomly, but you are always polishing at a constant angle and the same rhythm!!! This is the final finish and it really shines. Absolutely different from other polishers. It's amazing. (^^)d"

Great information, but you must have commercial equipment supply dealer. That buffing pad, much less the buffer is serious stuff. Then you grabbed the cleaner & huge bar of “Green” buffing compound, I was convinced this is not your local parts store products. Very nice job, informative and patient instructor. As a retired ASE Master Tech, I deal with little sand cast items for my own use & use a bench grinder with sissle cotton wheel after wet sanding then polish up, using bar compound on alternator, A/C compressor or rocker arm covers. Thank you for your video. Subscribed and hit liked! I love learning even after 36+ years of fixing cars, trucks and everything else.

I don't clear coat anything. I feel it takes away from my polish. What I do is just maintain with hand polish and or just recut and color maintain from time to time.

Thanks for the video! I was wondering if you can get away with just doing a single step with the orangle wheel and just polish it with a rotary with a wool pad with a metal polish. Will it leave hash marks in the finish or would it look good enough?

You surely can. I don't personally like finishing with a wool pad. I don't like the swirl or the pattern it leaves. It isn't less hasty that way either in my personal opinion. But I do know a lot of people that just do a single step.

Hey there, I'm currently polishing an airstream and have done an initial cut with Brown tripoli and a red airway wheel using the Dewalt variable speed polisher. I then cleaned the surface with mineral spirits and changed to a coloring wheel and moved to a green moss compound, I noticed from certain angles and lighting, a brown haze develop after step 2. Is this something you've experienced before? and what can I do about this?

Not sure. I’d have to see it. Brown haze usually means burnt. But white haze means missed spots.

Just put it in the order notes. In ms you’ll want the drier green. Brown is sane everywhere but green changes.

I’m trying to polish my hostile forged wheels and I started with the orange pad, (all pads by zeyphr) with the grey bar. Then went to the yellow pad with brown bar. Then to green with green bar. Then white with white bar. I still have a dull finish and a lot of small scratches in the wheels from I guess the cutting pads? What am I doing wrong? I’ve tried different pressure and speeds. I can not figure it out. Any help would be very appreciated! I’m cleaning the pads with the rake also.

My dads a trucker and he gave me the task to polish his fuel tanks and I’ve bought all the right pads and even the angle grinder and even with sanding I can never get the right finish. There’s always a ton of residue left over and very very hazy.

That means that the sanding wasn't done properly or the cut stage wasn't completed properly. One of those two things is your issue from the sound of it.

Should use brown tripoli bar with orange wheel then switch to yellow wheel and use green then switch to white soft flannel wheel with either a purple or red high finish you wont regret btw the colours i refer to for wheels and bars are from renegades products

Definitely, you want the grinder to spin the wheel towards the metal you are polishing or else it will want to jerk away and could hit you.

I love watching your videos and have tried to learn a little something especially since I have ZERO experience in this art form. After watching you in some of these videos you talk about "coloring". What does that mean? It doesn't change the color of the metal, I'm baffled. Now you really know I know so little about this process. I would love to learn more. I do have a course like that. I will create a video on polisher lingo soon. But coloring technically does change the color of the metal on a very minute level. Green color leaves the aluminum a dark color. White and blue bars or purple bars leave a brighter light almost whiter color. But you would really have to look closely to notice it.

Can you restore stacks? Blueing of lower chrome elbows, spools, and tops. Back to a shine.

Sometimes. You can't buff chrome as it is just a plating and will melt off if you hit it with a buffer. With a good quality hand chrome polish you can sometimes get blue off of pipes. But most times the blue gets too deep and then you can't get it out. You need to get it early and before it works in deep.

If i can get the spools and tops back shiny enough to be close to the new picket elbows. Then it will save me lots of money. Oh and once i tried useing a product for restoring motorcycle exhaust. Anti blueing paste. It kinda works. Looks like baking soda.

We polish here in Wisconsin but if you have a polisher in your area I always recommend using local. Local is likely gonna care about you more than any other company will. We strive to take good care of everyone as best we can but use who you are comfortable using.

1.Is the aluminium surface prone to corrosion after its buffed to a mirror finish? 2. If it is prone, then how do you suggest to protect it? 3. What should i use to protect an aluminium engine cover that's been buffed to a mirror finish from corrosion. Kindly suggest something that i can use everyday and also something that will last for a long term to maintain the mirror finish. Thank you sir.

Aluminum will always corrode. Even if coated. Aluminum is a porous metal and breathes from both ways. Inside out and outside in. The best way to protect it is to use a mild metal polish. I offer Time2Shine aluminum polish on goshineon.com/shop. You wouldn't need to use it everyday but once a month or anytime you notice the shine fading a little would be the best way to maintain. is that the "old school standard" Jackson Lea 21 deluxe green bar? I find it too greasy ,prefer dry . I like the white 60hd (don't know if Jackson lea makes it anymore since they were bought out) maybe now called the C3568 .cuts faster and better less mess than the green bar and finish with the blue rouge (HATE the red rouge too greasy ,more for precious metals ) and a superfine white buff THEN final cloth. BTW I hate FORMAX compounds takes too long to cut with them on standard metals maybe they have improved last 8 years but Jacksonlea is my choice Funny it is all about technique like you said in buffing technology and every polisher\ buffer is different. Good to know a different point of view, final color mirror is usually called buffing by old schoolers

I don't currently use any Jackson lea bars. They do make a very high quality product for sure. I have my own custom blends of compounds that we use and sell. All our bars are semi wet. I'm not a big dry bar guy. If I lived in a hotter climate I would definitely use a drier bar but here in the upper Midwest it is hard to get enough heat for dry bars to be effective. But I always so no matter how you get it to shine, If it shines you did it right. To each their own. Everyone does it different. I've been polishing 20 years this year and I've met so many different polishers over the years that so many have neat ways of doing things.

My Question: I can get aluminum neatly buffed nice.. now , a protectant?? I ruin my cleaning jobs faster with water stains and it dulls fast. Can you help me with any advice? --- I'm using a 1995 Black & Decker Buff Master.

I just was issued a brand new Peterbilt 567 with unpolished wheels and tanks and there is no side flaring to cover the tanks so they need to be polished. With a brand new truck do you still have to start with the brown bars then work up to white or can I get away with just using white?

You should check out my difference between 3,000 rpm vs 6,000 rpm video. Buffs aren't made to spin over 3500 rpm. Lots of us do spin them at 6,000 but should never go over that. The pads just aren't made to go that fast.

I charge by the piece based on condition and the amount of work needed to get it right. So every truck costs different.

Where do you say what you're polishing with? What kind of wheel is that, and what is that compound? What do you mean by "product" and "coloring"? I don't see any color in your finish.

I am polishing with a orange buff and brown rouge/compound to cut and create the first initial shine. I followed it up with the yellow wheel and green compound (also known as color). This process brightens up and brings out the shine. So no color per say but brightness.

Hey, Evan...I’m new to polishing with a grinder Iv always done it by hand. One issue I’m constantly running into is that I find the grinder constantly trying to run off on me. Why is that? Is it the angle holding the grinder? Is it the wrong rpm grinder? Wrong pad size? Pleeeease help! Thanks!

That is like asking Stevie Wonder what color his shirt is. LOL But with that said there could be a great multitude of reasons why that is happening. Could be one of any of the things you mentioned and could also be too much pressure or not enough pressure. Could also be too much rouge or not enough rouge. Could be the surface you are working on isn't prepped enough to polish. I would have to see or watch you polish and see what you are working on to be able to answer a question like that properly.
