Wonderful picture of the President's Own tuba section you have in the beginning! The tubist in the middle was my teacher in high school, Mark Thiele.

THANK YOU! My Nirschl is so tarnished, and I was planning on trying to tackle this soon, the nooks are so hard to get to though. Last time I did it, it took FOREVER and didn't look great.

Hey, Good video. My grandpaw left me a silver double barrotone tuba that he bought from the real (the first) Ringling Brothers in the early 1900s.. I'm 64 so you can see this was a long long time ago.. He was a self taught musician and was in the New Orleans Public Service Owith his only son. . He was a music teacher, played the slide trombone (my sister had two of those, don't know what happened to them) and ,trumpet. My mom was first chair trumpet within two weeks at her school, McMaine High. Of all times in my life I am finally interested in the flute and I am a beginner flute at this time. It's hard bc my husband has brain cancer. Yeah. Can't practice as much as I want to. -Like an idiot I kept the barratone in the attic. It's tarnished. This video will help me a lot. -I remember my grandpaw letting the spit out of the barratone, oiling the "keys". He also played the violin. Wow, I remember that most of all. -So after all of these years and finally interested in a windwood, maybe I'll have a chance.

Do you have to take the valves out when you're spraying it?
@tubadylan Жыл бұрын
No. I recommend keeping the valves in so the spray doesn't get into the casing.

The black stain is a feature of the polish. As you polish the grit gets smaller and smaller until it i super fine. That which is black is the used up portion of the grit.

How about tips for cleaning gold plated?
@tubadylan7 жыл бұрын
Gold-plated instruments can be shined in a similar way as silver. Gold doesn't tarnish, so when you see spots on your gold-plate, it means that the silver underneath the gold is tarnished. Silver polish will go right through the gold plating and fix that problem, however, be careful, it is easy to damage the gold plate if you rub too hard with your cloth.

I have a question, how would you clean a satin/matte finished sousaphone? the bell is clean but the body has fingerprint marks and has almost a brownish tint in certain areas even though the instrument is almost new. I'm very confused and need help
@tubadylan8 жыл бұрын
You can polish a satin silver finish the same way.

Just had my silver trumpet acid bathed... It looked worse then when I brought it to the store.... any tips for helping it look better. it took the color off the valve tops and some joints... my son is going to cry if that is what he has to take it to school....
@loudplanetlive50808 жыл бұрын
You can do this in your tub with the foil/baking soda/salt method with no polishing required. Just soak and rinse.
@oliversykes64027 жыл бұрын
Loud Planet Live Removing tarnish is not synonymous with polishing. Polishing levels out small scratches an make silver very shiny. The process you described, electrolysis, just removed tarnish.
@21DaHoagie125 жыл бұрын
Nahhhh putting your instrument in a bath with random cooking materials is NOT the same as using a professional silver polish. Plus Hagerty silver polish has tarnish preventative compounds in it that help your instrument stay shinny. Bath method doesn't do that either

No its most likely lacquered so you don't need to.

Just take it a part and put it in a warm bath for a couple minutes if it gets disgusting.
@tubadylan8 жыл бұрын
Yes.But shine VERY lightly when you rub with a cloth. The silver below the gold plate can tarnish and make the gold plate look spotty. Be careful. The gold rubs off easily.

tubadylan I have 2 frosted silver besson besson British style tubas, one in BBb and one in EEb, the EEb I play regularly and enjoy very much as it is a beautuful instrument. I recently acquired the BBb through a friend as I have always wanted to play one but it is very badly tarnished, would I need to clean it in another way before I do this?
@tubadylan8 жыл бұрын
Nope. You may have to reapply your polish though. Lots of tarnish will need more polish.

You can remove scratch marks off of A tuba by scratching all around the marks, hopefully in a semi-pleasing pattern. Don't try this at home, folks!

Anyone know how to hide/ remove scratches?
@tubadylan7 жыл бұрын
Detective Burning You would have to buff them out somehow, which would lose some plating for sure, and even perhaps some of the brass underneath. Think of a scratch on an instrument as a proud battle-scar.
@jonz76987 жыл бұрын
It's not 1 scrath, it's like a bunch of tiny scratches. Like using a bad towel and it gets tiny marks all of the instrument. You can see it in the light if you are looking at it (Bought it used and the case it came in has a little cover thing that you place over the trumpet and the surface that touches the trumpet is scratchy)

is it bad if I polish my sousaphone once a week?
@Leo-vr3bg8 жыл бұрын
No, marching an instrument gets it in much worse a condition than an indoor horn.
@brasschick42147 жыл бұрын
Gabriel - I wouldn't use the polish weekly. A quick buff with a soft cloth sometimes is enough for fingerprints, graduate to silver - polishing cloths impregnated with chemicals then the cleaners.
