Good info. Helped me get my D5100 flash open. However, the thin piece of plastic I used for my tool was hitting the little wall surrounding the hole that the latch protrudes from, and the plastic tool was not contacting the latch, but instead just hitting that little wall around the latch. This little wall can be seen in a number of videos if you look for it. And the flash lid just presses the tool down so as to hit that little wall. I was maybe just very unlucky that for the longest time I tried, the tool never contacted the latch. Knowing this, I could have put a curve in the plastic tool so that it would raise up a little and get over that little wall and hit the latch. For anyone else that may be getting stuck like this. Try putting a little upward curve on the plastic tool. But I ended up using a thin piece of metal for a tool and tapping on it, which shaved off that little wall, not knowing it was there. But the flash is working properly now. Too bad I didn't notice that little wall.

Worked great! Used a piece of thin plastic from a package, returned my D5100 flash to a normal state!

I got my Olympus e520 to open with a card like a business card to slide between the flash cap and the body...I think a razor blade, the old type that is very flexible to go between the lid and the body would also work.

Thank you mikeno62! After a few tries using thin plastic strips as you did, the flash popped up on my D5100. Now I need to figure out why it doesn't pop open like it should.

A tiny bit of a liquid electronic switch cleaner, such as 99% isopropyl alcohol or DeOxit, may be all you need, if the switch and/or solenoid, is just gummed up or has minor internal corrosion. Use your judgment but, with a charged battery inserted in the camera, work the switch while applying the tiny amount of cleaner solution. A fine needle and small syringe may help in controlling the amount you apply. The solution evaporates after it has done its job. This is also a method for cleaning the insides of rotary switch mechanisms, i.e. volume and tone controls, on older electronics, without taking the switches apart or replacing them. Just spin the control knob back and forth, after you apply the solution, and work out the dead and corroded spots inside the mechanism. On devices with 120 volt or 220/240 volt power supplies, do this after the device has been unplugged for at least an hour or more, to allow the capacitors to fully discharge and avoid shocks. Do this at your own risk - electricity from a wall plug or mains can kill you.

Nikon D5100 switch (staring down with lens in front/closest to you and LCD farthest away) is on the bottom right a little less than an inch back. The switch is opened by pushing it towards the back.
