How To Position Someone In A Hospital Bed by Yourself

Here's a video on how to position someone in a semi-electric hospital bed that is unable to do so themselves. Preventing decubiti, or "bedsores" is the reason proper positioning is important. If the person is incontinent, has advanced dementia, or does not have the perception to move an extremity, he/she has to be positioned. Positioning needs to be done every 2 hours. You will need a bunch of different sized pillows to make the person comfortable. Always use a chuck to keep the pillows and bed dry. Be sure to tell the person what you are doing. Never leave the person unattended with the bed rail down!

I'm amazed that every video I see is with someone who cooperates with you. It would really be nice to see someone do this was someone who has dementia and doesn't cooperate.

Hi Mary, Thank you for your comment. This is so true! People with dementia can be difficult and definitely not cooperative. Check out my video about the Dawn Method which shows you ways to turn the behavior around. You present so that the person who is not cooperative will change their behavior. Check out the video I have on my channel Caregiver Success, with Judy Cornish, and please subscribe if you haven't already LOL. Also you can look up Teepa Snow who has written many articles and presentations on how YOU can learn how to behave so you can work a person with dementia. My mother is a complete,suffered a bad stroke. She is in a “ rehabilitation facility “ they are not doing this. I visit her daily for 4-5 hrs. I will do this while I’m there hopefully it will be helpful.

Hi Sharon. I am so sorry to hear about your mom. You are a good soul. Helping move your mom while in bed will help prevent painful pressure sores, pneumonia, and contracture. Let me know what else you need to be her advocate. ❤

I like it how the patient does the turning by herself, even grabbing on to the rail. Try making that demonstration on a paralyzed person; wrestling deadweight who weighs 130 lb, but feels like 300lb. Obviously you've never done that. If you have a method, please show us.

Thank you for your comment, I understand your frustration. Yes, this is purely demonstration, but sometimes, in my experience, it has taken 2 people or more to turn and change a person. In that case, someone could help with turning from the other side using the draw sheet for leveraging. Hope this helps. 🙏
