Hey, I have a question if you have time. I am looking into building a bullet trap and recycling my lead over and over, I was wondering if the powder coating burns off when remelting the bullets, or do you need to burn off the paint first?

that chalky look on the bullets for some reason looks very nice...but when they're done..WOW!! I had that same toaster oven as a private in the Army. It was the "Floor Hottie"....pizzas, grilled cheese, bagel sandwiches, burritos. Someone took it one Friday night of a good Barracks Party.

A to B boys! This ain't the Navy son! Freshly coated freedom seeds! 👍 Love those fresh out of the oven. I'm loving the board idea also very efficient. Ok so are you quenching to harden or am I missing something? You shock me all night long!🎼🎵🎶 Suggestion: I use a strainer when quenching it gets them in the water but makes it easy to pull them out when I go to the towel. Try it you may like it. Time saver.
@DummyRound

Thanks, Tim. I need to get a strainer for quenching like you said. I don't do it for hardness, necessarily. Mostly just to get jt cooled off and out of the way for the next batch lol

They looked good . I've found that if I don't dilly dally when I remove from the oven to the water , I get almost no stickage of the bullets . Like out of the oven and in the water , right now works the best . I don't see a difference in what container you use to shake them up in either , a #2 , #5 or a plastic coffee can . I use old mayo or peanut butter containers .

Yep, I try to go from the oven straight to the water as well. Some like to air cool, but I just want it to be done with and out of the way for the next batch. I might do some HPs and let them air cool, but I'm not really testing for expansion so I might as well just quench those as well. Thanks 👊

Nice vid DR. I think my powder mightve got wet. Its bot sticking like urs. My most accurate cast are those 312s but in alox and with a gas check and sized. If u like trying new things. Try the wet shake n bake. If i remember its a little acetone and really light coats/not much powder. Keeps the dust down
@DummyRound
@DummyRound Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I've tried the wet method once or twice, and probably had too much powder, so I didn't get the results I wanted. I've never had an issue with the dry method, unless it was a powder that just doesn't work, or if I left it out in the shaking container between batches(several weeks or longer) and it absorbed too much humidity(I'm guessing?).

@DummyRound
@DummyRound 6 ай бұрын
As long as your bearing surface is covered, you're good. Bare spots on the nose or base don't matter since it's not contacting the barrel and can't leave leading behind. Even the lube grooves between the driving bands don't matter, just the surface contacting the barrel. Hope that helps🇺🇲👍 Thanks!

I had some heat deformed in the center- lower rack best to go high in the oven?
@DummyRound
@DummyRound 4 ай бұрын
It really depends on your oven, but you were probably right on top of the heating coil, or your oven is getting hotter than the temperature dial is set to. If you have other racks you can try, go ahead and experiment. I've had small 22 cal bullets melt on me before, right after I had a perfect batch of 35 cal bullets. Just depends how fast they take on heat, how close they are to the source, and if the source is the correct temperature. Hope that makes a bit of sense. Thanks!

I've never used a powder coated freedom seeds before. Always thought about sticky fouling in the barrel from the paint. Another thing I've always wondered is; if the paint would inhibit the loading tolerances of either your casing or your barrle, and what effect that has on rifling engagement, spin, added Grain weight, excetera, as the paint obviously has a thickness and a weight. I'm not saying it doesn't work I literally CANNOT say that as I have never used them before I'm pretty much making these statements because of my THOUGHTS which MAY be wrong, and wondering what your thoughts are on it since you've done it and have the experience. Have you noticed any problems with powder-coated freedom seeds vs. Uncoated seeds? Legitimately asking; not being a smart-ass
@DummyRound
@DummyRound 10 ай бұрын
You size the bullets after coating so it's the same diameter as any cast bullet. It doesn't add a whole grain to the total weight compared to bare lead. If your lead is of the correct hardness, powder coat is more durable than copper plating. The only problem I've ever had is having to reduce the OAL due to the ogive hitting the rifling in a picky barrel a few thousandths earlier than if it weren't coated. It's basically night and day compared to traditional lube lead bullets. Hopefully that answers your questions👍🇺🇸

So say hypothetically you had a bad batch of coated seeds ,,,, flaking coat - weight - ect. ect. ,,, can you recast/smelt with the coating on

@@DummyRound I do all of my baking at one time, one batch after another, so in theory, the oven is preheated. I just have not seen any difference from the first cold oven batch.
@DummyRound
@DummyRound 5 ай бұрын
I'm sure it's negligible. My only thought was the minute or two it would take to get up to temp is taking a minute or two away from the actual bake time... I don't follow directions and start a timer when 'the powder coat starts to flow', but rather when it goes in. It probably doesn't matter, but just one of those things I do as part of my process. I'll try a cold start next time if I remember.

Can anyone tell me , can you use any type of powder coating? Or is there a certain make you have to use for lead bullets.
@DummyRound
@DummyRound 2 ай бұрын
Theoretically, you can pick any, but there are known good and bad powders to use. The go-to never fail option is Eastwood Ford Light Blue. The metallic looking and translucent ones usually never come out looking how you want them to until they have 2 or 3 coats on them, which is just a waste of time and resources. Some powders will not bind to the lead to begin with, and thus will not bake onto/around the lead. Start with the Eastwood FLB and experiment with cute colors and such after you get your process down👍🤠🇺🇲

Your bullets look great but I think you put a little too much work in to be honest. Parchment and foil is an unnecessary complication and expense for pistol bullets. I do 750+ 9mm at a time in a deep fryer basket and drop them from 3 ft into a quench bucket. Yo barely get a bare spot and very few stick together. I take much more care with rifle bullets and place them individually into a silicone micro ice tray with a powder covered pai of fine needle nosed pliers gripping the bullets in the grease grooves.
@DummyRound

I never had luck with the "big pile in a basket" method. They just stick together like a rock. I think humidity and atmosphere have some weird effects on the PC, depending on where you're at. I would like to try some of the tiny ice cube trays for my rifle bullets... need to break in a new Lyman mold, anyways 😉👍🇺🇲Thanks
