Hi Yan, I'm 52 and I just started to learn working with Blender. I bought your course "Sculpting in Blender" and now I find this the most fun part to do in Blender. Last week I sculpted one head in 3 hours to get used to the tools, so now I'm going for the one hour challenge, every evening for a week at least. My first goal is to be able to sculpt my two dogs in detail including hair in Pixar-style:-) When I am able to do that, may be I find a new job. Who knows ;-) I am Just curious, are there more women my age who started to work with Blender recently? It is really fun!

Hey, that is very great to hear. There seem to be more male than female in 3D from what i know, as for the age yeah i actually know a few on my channel that are around your age, it is very inspiring!

In learning how to draw and paint, I do agree with you about speed sculpting, but not necessarily that your earlier sculpting was wasted effort. I think when you're first learning how to sculpt or draw, having no time limit is important to gain your bearings. Basically, I see a few steps for committing what you observe to become second nature. 1) First, doing slow work from reference. 2) Then trying to draw/sculpt it fairly quickly from memory, compare with reference to see where the image in your head is wrong, then 3) do strictly timed speed versions. I actually think there's another step beyond that of 4) doing simplifications/caricatures of what you've learned, varying what you emphasize and leave out, because that focuses on committing the essence of something to memory to help you remember 1-3 more effectively later. When I sit down to do a study of a new subject, I try to do all these steps in a row, and in one sitting if I have a day to practice. Anyway, the point I'm making is that you've done plenty of 1 and 2 (and 4) so far, and now you're discovering 3, but if you are speaking to beginners, I think your video may be taking 1 and 2 for granted because you've already done it so much. For most people, 1 and 2 are not worse steps, but helpful and even necessary steps to get to 3. But I do agree that 3 is a good place to hang out in for familiar subjects. I just think 1 and 2 should be emphasized as important too.
@yansculpts
@yansculpts 7 жыл бұрын
Very good and important points. One thing though, when i started the 10k thing i didn't do any of the 4. I was new, beginner like everyone. I got the idea from gesture drawings actually. The reason i didn't emphasize 1 2 and 4 is because this video is about 3. There will be videos on the rest. Difference is digital sculptors usually don't come with a drawing background same as me, which is why we never think of 3 as a method. Also a lot of people are missing an important part, which is locking in the hour and never touching the character, it isn't just about the speed sculpting (as i have explained in the video) If a beginner starts with learning slowly he well be overwhelmed with information he doesn't know and learn a lot less in the process. For me when i started with gesture drawing i saw so many benefits right away, i then only recently started doing slow studies and i tackle them with confidence before of the speed work. To each their methods, i am learning and creating new ones, testing them then teaching them :) So i stick to it when i say, this will be very beneficial for beginners, in fact probably especially beginners. I am not dismissing anything you are saying btw, thanks for the info ;)

Hey Yan! Good advice! This definitely works. I was in school sculpting a character for 2 months, I was losing interest and not learning much out of it. But now I do small studies and it is a good feeling. However I still feel the fear of making bad art so that kept me procrastinating. Have anyone felt like this too?

Most of my practice has been to do short sculpts, 1 to 2 hours, but I haven't really had a hard line for where to stop. I just did this 1 hour challenge yesturday actually! What I did though is I did a couple digital art photo studies in grayscale to get a better understanding of the face, then I opened up blender and started sculpting with no references. Then heres what I did differently, After I finished with the sculpt, I stopped looking at it for about 30 mins - 1 hour and look back at it and used references to find my mistakes and correct them in within an hour. The corrected mesh is a duplicate so I can see before and after to see where I messed up and will try another 1 hour sculpt soon ^^

That a great way to learn. That is a bit different though, the magic here is locking yourself to exactly 1 hour and you don't have the right to change anything after that no matter how bad you want to. You should try it too ;)

Michael Lebedev check out his two Beginner Sculpting Tutorials where he sculpts a stylized male head and one where he sculpts just an ear(I sound like I’m advertising, but I’m just spreading the love since his workflow is great). You’ll get all the basics you need from that and he has said NOT to copy him stroke for stroke, but learn the concept of what he’s doing and when he uses different brushes so you can do it your OWN way. I know from personal experience that following him step for step takes FOREVER lol. I’m getting much faster watching when he switches brushes and how he gets a general form and attempting it on my own characters. Sculpting takes a lot of practice as many things do lol.

Hey Yan, did you apply this method to head sculpts only? Do you think the average person would be able to progress by sculpting the entire head and body in only an hour?
@chandlerdavis952
@chandlerdavis952 2 жыл бұрын
I sculpt about 4 to six hours a day I'll creare a series of related caritures just the heads one day torsos the next etc. Till I have all the parts to assemble them each set different. Then I pick pieces at random creating the body finally by the end of the week having all if them fully assembled. Pick out one fir me one to give away the rest get recycled. I don't make the same twice especially if I like it for at least 6 months. Then if I want to redo a favorite chariture it's okay. Then I can it with the older one to Guage my progress. Has to be a different expression or different age if I repeat chariture. Another good pratice is to hang out at a local pub or brew house coffee shop. And just sculpt small chariture inevitably some will ask if I can make one for them usually from a picture. I do it usually free or for cost of materials like 5-10 bucks. I put a max time if 30 min start to finish. No matter how good or vad it us it leaves with them or gets recycled. Helps build speed accuracy & conference plus alot if the time pays for more supplies. Also gets you out there with people that like what your doing big bost of confidence when your just starting.

Just wondering is it better to use a graphics tablet or a mouse and keyboard? I’m saving up for a xp-pen artist 22e pro tablet and I’m going to buy a drawing course so I can start doing more stuff. Like making my own textures and materials from drawings because when I’m making different meshes it’s hard to find that perfect image texture that I could use for my project. I finished a whole course on blender and doing hard surfaces is going great for me even though I have been learning it for a month or so. Sculpting on the other hand seems like a nightmare to me even though it’s the most interesting part. I can’t even get the basic shape of a head from sculpting because the tools are confusing the hell out of me. The brushes just don’t feel right because one stroke is perfect and the next ruins the whole geometry especially when trying to smooth things out. And I never know when to use which brush and it’s frustrating at times. If I do a poly to poly I can make an almost perfect head and body but it takes an insane amount of hours. So I’m planning on buying your course as well on sculpting to get started with character design because it’s definitely a faster way to create a character through sculpting and then doing a retopology. Just like you’ve said some of us feel like we’re perfectionists and it’s really hard to not finish something but at the same time that perfectionism is killing your interest for a particular thing. This is the first thing I’m definitely not giving up on because it’s art and being creative is something to help to relax myself from stressing out too much. So I’m going to take any advice I can get and I’m really thankful that you take your time to share your tips and tricks since your sculpts are just insanely good. Keep up the good work!

Thanks i will. Art takes patience, you said it is relaxing and it is but not always, because you will always go through frustration when learning, which is a natural part of the process just be ready for it ;). Good luck!

Hey YanSculpts do you have a tutorial series on learning to sculpt for beginners, and another on how to create a head sculpt? I have tried to do it but sculpting in blender is kinda hard to get the hang of. Id love to see how oyu add more resolution to the mesh, and just watch the full process on 1 of your sculpts if possible since they are only 1 hour sculpts (which is fast). I think id learn a lot from that if you make it available / as a video. Thanks. Im gonna subscribe and watch your other videos, but i just wanted to make a sculpt tutorial request if you dont have any others (havent check yet). Thanks

I don't have a "blender beginner sculpting series" yet, which i will do. But i made over 160 videos already covering all what you said, check yan's daily tips playlist.

This is exactly what I did when I first learned how to sculpt in february this year ! During the whole month I did a different sculpt every day . And most of them looked like crap . But it;s that practice that helped me a lot . And I learned a lot from that . Maybe I'll do another month like that . Now I;m working like that . But now I work on a character for 2 days maxim . From sculpt to retopo to materials lighting , particle hair and everything . After 2 days of work I start something new . Btw if you make a critique video can you do me too ? Just search Robert Gheciu on artstation

That a good way to do things. Don't forget the part where you lock in the hour and you can't touch the character after that. it has its own benefits :) For the critique i will tweet it and people will have to send me their work at that time :)

Is one hour sculpting rule works for total beginners?

of course, i did that and still do that with drawing as a beginner, and it worked wonders (idea came from quick gesture drawings). Try it for a month regularly, you will see a world of difference :)

Im starting to sculpt (i recently bought the beginners series) the thing is that I do not have a drawing experience with anatomy (or at all really XD, but I have already done succesful sculpting with a lots of time and references), but i want to do characters, should I practice sculpt without any reference? I dont want to discover after a month of practice that I was doing everything wrong every single time... Whats your advice?
@yansculpts
@yansculpts 6 жыл бұрын
My advice is to learn drawing. This isn't something a lot of sculptors believe strongly in so it is up to you, but i highly recommend it. You should use reference for the first year or 2, with constant practice. You can start going without reference a bit when you have a good knowledge of anatomy and enough sculpting or drawing millage.

Thats a good method to practice i think. For me i do that, if my time is very limited. If i have enogh time i try to make a full chracter plus retopology, uvs, baking and texturing. My first character was this one: www.artstation.com/artwork/qDkER However in my opinion every new sculpt will make you better. Just enjoy the journey. ^^

Yeah... you see I get bored after like 30mins of sculpting, Probably because the result doesn't even come close to what I visualize in my head. What should I do for that.
@yansculpts
@yansculpts 6 жыл бұрын
Lack of consistency might be your issue, if you are not consistent you will get bored because you won't improve much. Set goals and aim to achieve them, you need to figure out what makes you tick in the long term.
