I can’t believe your videos don’t have more views.....people are really missing out. Not only is it great content but you are a delight to listen to....so relaxing as others have mentioned with just the right amount of chatting. I ordered your book today. I started doing watercolor years ago but as with all hobbies I move on to the next thing before I truly master anything.

You mention one can have a limited watercolor pallet but I have heard from other artists that if you are doing floral paintings a lot, which I do, that it is best to buy as many colors as you can because once one starts mixing 2 colors together, you are taking away from the beauty of watercolor and keeps going down the more colors one adds to the pile. Landscape painting is a little different but with botanical floral painting, one wants to keep the colors as pure as possible. This was a wonderful tutorial. I have a lot of tubes of paint, even the same color but different brands because sap green in one brand is not as nice from another brand. I am glad I found your channel. You explained everything so nicely.

You can just use some water & either baking soda, borax, or anything with similar grain to clean it and it will give you that nice consistent roughness so your paint will puddle nicely 😊 no need for the scour pad. Just thought I'd help because your 1st tip there was the biggest help to me first starting out! ❤ Love your channel I'm going to watch all of your playlists and every commercial for you. Your colour selection is very nice. Technically the best way to fill such kind of plastic palettes is to place the blobs of colour to the edge of the slanted wells and not at their deeper part. It is supposed that when you place the paints this way, when you wet them the diluted colour runs at the deeper part of the slants. Something that it makes sense but I don't know anyone who is doing that, including myself!! lol But plastic palettes like the one you show on this video are the best for outdoor painting because they have plenty of separated mixing spaces for light or heavier washes, they are lightweight and very flat so it is easy to have them in your bag.

I did a lightfastness test on many colors of Daniel smith and winsor and Newton in a south facing window for 4-6 months (can’t remember; it was at least four months). And winsor and Newton opera rose barely faded at all. Seriously. The mass tone didn’t change at all. The tinted out swatch maybe faded 0.5%. I was absolutely shocked. I expected it to fade within a month. The fluorescence remained after 4 months in a hot sun in the middle of the summer in Arkansas. So my point is this: I think people obsess over lightfast ratings and worry too much over it. Prussian blue faded more than opera rose. So things aren’t always as we expect. Use the colors you like. That’s all that matters. Sure, commissions should be lightfast. That is understandable. But if something hasn’t faded in FOUR MONTHS in a hot sun with constant sun exposure I think a painting hanging in a dim hallway will be fine for many years. Plus…. Do people not realize that opera rose, when it fades, will simply fade down to a non fluorescent magenta? The base is still PR122 which is still a bright magenta. It’s not like the color will fade to brown

I bought this pallette and did the prep with glue stick, wire scrubber, and Magic Eraser. I worked. After around 2 painting sessions, the paint no longer sticks to the plastic. I was so excited to finally have a real palette set up. BUT don't use Arteza tubes. They dry out and if you close the lid they fall out into the other colors. I like Arteza for a beginner (which I am) but am going to upgrade because I have tried some of the Winsor Newton paints and love them. They are so much better. Live and learn, but keep painting.

This is wonderful info. I use a small porcelain pallet with 5 wells and then below that is what you use to mix water with the paint or combine two colors. I do not like the heavy porcelain pallet. They are bulky taking up way too much room. So the paints I need for that tutorial is what I put out. I did not fill the round wells up but small portions were put out and then constantly reaching for the tube. I use porcelain because paints do not bead up. But now...I will run out to store and get that wirey silver scrubber and scrub my plastic palette and remove the gloss. I did not even think of preparing a chart to go along with what is in my palette. Thank you so much.

I was going to suggest toothpaste as well. Thanks, bludeva! For anyone who wants to try toothpaste: use the non-gel type, the one that is usually white. Toothpaste is also very good at removing stains. It does not scratch the surface; if that were the case we would all have scratched teeth! Just apply a pea sized amount on a dry cloth and wipe the surface. Add more toothpaste if necessary. Once done, wipe the surface down with a damp cloth, and that’s it!

I have just found your videos and WOW, what a joy!!! You have such a brilliant way of teaching and so calming and engaging. Love hearing your wisdom and learning things that are important to assist in being more successful in watercolor. This idea of building your own palette was perfect. I had purchased a plastic folding case, though didn't like it for working as the colors all just puddled. Now with the tip of "roughing up" the palette will be easier to bring back out and try again. I have to wonder when one is done with the painted piece, if it could be laminated and put inside the palette. If it get paints on it, you can simply wipe it clean. Just a thought from a total beginner. Thank you for dedicating your time to teaching us. What a pleasure to have found you.

Such a lovely (and soothing) video. I use both pans and tubes but seem to like the tubes more and the way you’ve done it looks perfect. I use W&N Cotman but I’m sure the professional versions are better but a bit too expensive for now. I got a case with some pans in loads of colours (can’t remember the name of it) which was very cheap and you’re so right with quality as the paint was awful so it went in the bin quickly! Love your book! 😊

Well here’s a tip to do as Harriet says and not as I do. 🤪 I was so excited to get going and I filled my wells before I scuffed up my mixing area😳. I didn’t have quite the right tool so I used a rough emery board and woah…not a good idea! I have deep scratches that catch color and it’s a big fat mess. Oh well not the end of the world I guess…😵‍💫

I seriously need to do one of these swatch cards. I’ve been getting quite frustrated with how much lighter the colours are once the paint dries. I’m very focused on colour matching and am more experienced with Acrylic. So, yes, a swatch card will hopefully save me some time in the long run. Ps. I thought professional range was to do with lightfastness. But I don’t know.

Hi greetings from Thailand aka Lava-land because we're having 45 degrees Celsius these few weeks🥵🥵...thank you so much for your channel. I am trying to start painting now to pass time since my son is already in university. Your channel is really very helpful and interesting. I would like to know if there's any difference in colour if we get them in "Hue"? This is because some of the Winsor & Newton I can get here doesn't have the same colour code as the ones I see from the website. For example Cadmium Yellow 108 and the one I bought is Cadmium Yellow Hue 109. And I see we have got a few colours in "Hue" here. Hope to hear from you and have a wonderful week ahead. Thank you.

How long does it take for the paint to harden in the palette? I just bought this palette just to mix colors in - I thought it was a big mixing tray, but now I can put my tube paints in there and take them with me to class! Brilliant! I've been watching your videos for a couple of months now and I love the way you paint. You're beautiful style! You are an exquisite artist if I may say so. @@alistairfraser8579 if you like gooey, you should try brand watercolors with honey. I find my M Graham watercolors stay that way and are vibrant. I dont carry them around on a travel palette though because they can run if it gets warm out. For that i prefer the Daniel Smith and Schmincke which stay put and you can spray or just activate/re-wet with a drop or two of water.
