I have binge watched about all your videos the last couple weeks. Great stuff! Lots of great tips, you explain in a way that anyone can understand. I got a 69 firebird I'm putting together as a ratty beater. Not a restoration really, just a fun, cheap car. I also picked up a very rough 69 SS Camaro I am going to restore so alot of your tips I will use when I rebuild that car. I picked up a rusty but complete 69 firebird to use for parts for my other 69 bird. After watching your channel, it's got me thinking about building the parts car too!.

I do drive it some, me and that car have a special love hate relationship. Every time I fix something on it something totally unrelated breaks. I have sooooooo many stories and it’s only that car. So I have learned to leave the wipers inop and blower motor not working. That way I make it home

Sweet! Is there a water separator on the air to your gun. Also I didn't see it but did you dilute the primer and if so what did you use.
@VinylVillageGarage Жыл бұрын
I have a separator at the compressor and an additional one right on the gun. Th e primer for bare metal I only mix it with the catalyst. When I use it for the sealer coat over body work I cut it with a little bit of acetone
@gibsonexplorer8777 Жыл бұрын
John what do you set your pressure on the small paint gun love both of your cars but that GTO Judge is so awesome! You do exalent work🙂
@VinylVillageGarage Жыл бұрын
Air pressure is a tricky thing. Every paint gun is a little different and even the kind of paint will effect what psi you spray at. My gun is a MAC tool econo coat HVLP seems to Spray best for me if I set the compressor tank regulator down to 40 psi then at the gun down to around 20psi. Good atomization is the goal but not too much air that it turns the paint into a fog.

I’ve been told that a DA with 80 grit should be done after media blast or is this just an overkill?
@VinylVillageGarage11 ай бұрын
If it’s blasted with baking soda only the metal is very smooth and in that case maybe sand it first. The media my guy uses is crushed glass and it leaves the metal open and rough enough I don’t have any adhesion issues, using this method over 25 years now and have not had any primer lifting issues. Just definitely keep oil off the metal before painting

Hey John, question on a different subject. Have you ever replaced the vent fitting on the rear axle, 10 bolt? Looks pretty simple but I don’t want to snap off the old one. If you have can you offer tips on the removal and reinstallation to avoid breakage. Thanks!
@VinylVillageGarage Жыл бұрын
Great question. Yes replaced several of them. Most of them are only plastic a few are a metal sleeve. I have broken a few off accidentally but they come out still. I don’t recall any issue removing them to give you any inside information. There is a thicker area right at the base that holds up good to a pair of vice grips twist and pull out. Installation I used the open end of a combination wrench don’t recall the size 3/8 or 7/16” Or there about. Then rest the open end of the wrench on the edge of the base and tap on the wrench to drive it on in. Worst case if you break and can’t remove the base remove the axle and drive it thru and retrieve it from the axle tube. Good luck.
@timg8045 Жыл бұрын
@@VinylVillageGarage thanks John! I’m looking into replacing this because I’m on my 2nd axle tube seal that seems to still be dripping fluid. Brand new TIMKEN axle bearing and seal on the passenger side of my 68. Bearings were professionally pressed on by a Fab shop and I reinstalled the last seal myself. I’m pretty mechanically inclined so I took my time and did it right. After about a month of driving I noticed another slight drip. I know not to buy Chinese crap so I went with TIMKEN stuff. Not to say that this stuff is probably still made in Mexico or China. LOL. Anyway I read where the axle vent tube if not doing it’s job could cause this as well. Figured I’d give it a shot. Thanks again for your help, love your videos! 👍🏻

Hi John, I have a 69 bird that has a black vinyl roof. The vinyl is in great shape and all the edges are good. The problem is that in the middle of the roof the vinyl is not stuck to the roof. When I go down the road it gets a big bubble where air gets under there and "inflates" it. I have not found a vinyl roof shop in my area (NW PA) but thought you may have some ideas?
@VinylVillageGarage Жыл бұрын
I bet that looks interesting driving. I haven’t had that issue before, the best solution would to be replace the vinyl top but I think what you are asking is there a “fix” without removing the top. I know I would try to get some adhesive inside the bubble and reattach it. Being that it’s black helps. I see putting some small holes 1/8” or even smaller in the top random locations and using an air compressor with a small tip air gun and regulate pressure very low to inflate the bubble then use the adhesive with a straw attachment and spray it around in the random holes the straw Would help get it in further. The when done little dab black rtv to fill the holes. Now the possible issues, adhesive might squeeze out the holes and might get on the top or even while spraying the glue it might come out the holes from air escaping. Long answer, just a thought or how I would try and save the top. NW PA how close to Greensburg or latrobe are you? I make a trip there at least one time a year

@VVG Firebird Restoration Station I'm in Jamestown. Midway between Pittsburgh and Erie. I've considered trying to sqirt adhesive with a syringe but wasn't sure how that would stick.
