Known as Chinese Lanterns, or Sky Lanterns depending on where you live, these flying lanterns are absolutely beautiful and amazing to watch. People worry about them starting fires, but that just isn't the case if you launch them in appropriate locations -- which is almost anywhere there is no brush or trees or buildings. Many places on planet earth qualify as excellent lantern launching locations.
Once a lantern is launched, it rises on the hot air trapped within the paper envelope. When the fire source burns out, the lantern falls to earth. So the fire safety of these lanterns is ensured. Only the remains, paper and bamboo, return to earth.

Sky Lanterns, more commonly known as KongMingDeng was invented by the Chinese as War signals along with the kites. After the warring ages, these lanterns were used during Chinese lantern festivals to carry messages and hopes to the God above. These lanterns spread from China to most of Asia and even to Brazil! Better to use the ones that are all bamboo (hoop) and string (biodegradable).. the wire one's are an issue for wildlife. just saying. Also, remember physics.. the lift (hot air) has to exceed the weight. The only variable int he equation is the weight of the fuel cake. I find that if you trim a bit off each corner, maybe a 1/4 inch.. it will fly sooner and again, physics.. just as high.

No. The volume of air within the lantern must first be heated sufficiently to create lift. That takes a little time. Liftoff will commence once the flame from the candle sufficiently heats the air. The video demonstrates this, as you see me holding the lantern for some time before it generates enough lift to leave my hand.

This is definitely not safe at all. If they get caught in a tree or a house they set fire to it. In Germany a boy died some years ago, because a sky lantern set the house on fire where he was sleeping. During this years new years celebrations one of those set fire to a Zoo building and 30 great apes died.

+sam das The fuel comes with the lantern. It's made of wax impregnated material that burns slowly and steadily. No extra fuel is needed. Just light the "fire cake" (the square shaped waxy part) that comes with each lantern using some fire source, like a Bic lighter or a propane torch. Whatever you want.

The real challenge for me is where to launch these lanterns. They're fun, but leave a bit of a mess when they land.

The desert is a good place if you can get far enough away from people. On the night when I shot the video 5 other campsites were launching them. It was beautiful. But then later the Rangers were crying about the mess left by the lanterns. Still a lot of fun and great memories.
