3 types:
-total mix prepatration (exactly wich songs, in points, cue points , loops, pitches etc) -disadvantage if crwowd needs something else
-track selection (framework) - more flexible with crowd (feel crowd). check crowd with certain songs and go from there
-combination first 2
-start with total prepared, or have certain playlist that you can spin (songs good fit).
-have a suggestion playlist as backbone for your set, but not fixed on that
How to make track selection?
- genre
- key
- tempo
Audience:
-radio or mixtape: prepare full - cant feel energy of crowd
-club - consider a track selection or combination of total mix and track selection
-first time club: prepare a lot - nervous = long to find music (make playlist so you dont have to look for your songs)
kinds of sets depend on time of evening:
- warmup sets, nothing wrong with being warmup dj - more freedom - that how you start
- mid evening,
- end evening
how to find compatible songs (and make playlist or write down:
- related in rb can help (based on key / bpm)
- find a lot of songs in the same genre and key. try to find the best match by listening and switching back and forth between track a and b in different parts of the song.
take into account: kind of party
- age
- style
- mixed crowd - select enough tracks in different genre so you can go all the way
expect the unexpected:
- players in other order, mixer other, booth monitor placed wrong, dj link connection absent
tip: know your music you are bringing
tip: playlist per genre, playlist per energy level
tip: bring extra usb drive (backup fail + forget usb)
tip: bring extra headphone
tip: bring more music than you would ever play : 1hr set? 3hrs of music
tip: make checklist. tedious - after a while: yes I know. Still walk through
tip: be on time

In college radio, I would stack CDs in order of what could come next. About half the time, I'd change my mind and pick a different song.

Be prepared to play with cdjs broken, different mixer than noticed, know how to mix just with headphones because of lag with the monitors. For my first gig I thought I was prepared but if something can go wrong IT WILL. Literally like every scenario I can imagine that would go wrong it went wrong so I had to improvise like everything

Thank you for those etiquette tips! I wouldn't have thought to tone down a set based on the previous or upcoming performaces, now I understand why certain sets sound the way they do!

I choose option 4 since I'm not a DJ and and don't really want to be one. I just want to make a set for a private party with my friends. So here I am going through tutorials.

Hey, there. I'm not at all a beginner. I played with vinyl in the 80s, CD's in the 90's and MP3's in the 00's. Now i'm switching to rekordbox and have WAY too much music to handle. I find it difficult to choose and find a way to catalog all. Sometimes these tutorials can help find a direction. Thx.

I’m going to do my first mix tomorrow. Going to use various styles of deep house starting from 115BPM and finishing on 123BPM. Is it usually okay to go up and down tempos or should I just stick to 1 tempo throughout the mix?
@DexxterClarkMusic
@DexxterClarkMusic 5 жыл бұрын
depending on the mood you are going for, but generally ok to switch tempo. there needs to be a flow in the mix

Does Rekordbox recognise Wav files that i have labelled and can it then recommend similar tracks of wav files or does it need other meta data?

banging tips bro, so why am i a DJ already looking at tips, mmmmmmmmmm. well i did retire from party djing and want to do some trance sets now, i have always loved trance as my go to listen. i am going to use probably only a daw or editor to swap about bits on a track, or put another lift or drop in or take samples and such like. yea got to agree bud nothing should be completely pre done and dumped into a massive mp3 file, not even old tong does that in his massive heritage shows and they are just pure djing excellence. mind i do really like the cream liverpool shows as well as they do not have an orchestra drummer at all unlike tonge does, yup night off, god i bet he had a good seat though , the dj is the dj and beatmaker for the whole 130 minute set/show/arrangement/overture,lol but gee buddy keeping a full philharmonic orchestra happy with your dj timing would be just murder and i could think of better things to do. ahhh the sweet transition to musician.

I have questions,how many times before the set you know if you are the warm up dj or not, and when you know it, do they tell you some songs that you can't play to let the banger one using them ? When dhj changes, how the transition is effectuated ? I alwas ask myself questions like that.

For me I couldnt care less what a warm up or other dj played before me. Lots of people misunderstand what this warm up thing is all about. Its not about leaving the other dj songs to play, in that sense warm up dj will be the hardest thing ever. When a club opens and there is like a couple of people on the dancefloor, it will naturally feel weird to play high energy songs during that time, even you wouldnt feel it. Entertainment is about dynamics, you need a mix of lows and highs. Warm up doesnt mean boring unknown songs, its just the songs that arent too high energy but are still interesting to listen and vibe too. The more people get drunk, the more people come into the club, the higher the energy has to be, That banger wont really hit home if people are still sober and there is no one on the dancefloor, it will make you look silly too.. So dont overthink it, end of the day you have to entertain the crowd and set a good vibe, but to do your job well its very important to be aware of these dynamics of a club night too. Just sort whatever songs you have into at least 3 playlists, 1 is for opening, 2 in the middle and 3 as the main act. In that way you can simple jump into a folder and play just the right tunes at the right time. Most of the work as a good dj will be in the preparation at your home, club play should be the easy part. When you prepare, it makes it easy to think of yourself as the only dj for the night, say 9pm to 2am then soon even as a beginner you will realise you also wont want to play that favorite big tune to 5 people when you can play it to 200+ drunk people later in the night who will sing along to it and call you the best 🤣You'll also realise how much music you need, you have to be able to cover any slot so 5 hrs is 300 min which is 300 1 min songs, maybe then multiply that by 5. Even if a dj played all tunes from your playlist, they couldnt have played all of them

There are so much songs out there, how do I build a music library from scratch? And how do I know which songs work well together ( I don’t mean the bpm or keys)? A lot of questions on my mind :D greetings
@DexxterClarkMusic
@DexxterClarkMusic 6 жыл бұрын
I would say, start with the songs you know and love. Keep an 'eye' out on spotify and beatport. (there is a beatport playlist on spotify). the best matches are happy accidents in my case. When I practice: if one song is spinning, which other song does it remind me of? Even if i dont know the title I can search in my library for that song. That works not al the time, but most of the time it does. I use the song-match feature so I dont forget good matches. When I am practicing Rekordbox automatically records the history, so you can see what played. I make playlists of good runs of practicing so you have always something to fall back to if you don;t know a good match. Good matches can be anything: Text/lyrics elements/instruments drops that really match with breaks of other songs a kick a drum loop They are a good match if you can play them with 50/50 volume and someone else can not hear that 2 songs are playing on top of each other is that helpful? please give me a thumbs up if the video was at any value to you ;-)

for example: "Nils van Zandt - Feel like Dancing" together with "Martin Solveig - Intoxicated". Judging on the key it is not a good match but when you listen to the elements in the song, it could be a good match when you mix it quickly and on the right spot

Same here 😂 used to be a sl1210 guy, knew every song by the labels! 67 now and retired now but on a whim bought some ddj800 unit, just wouldn’t be comfortable using them on the fly, for a paying crowd retired now, so only gigs I’d get are funerals 😂 and home bbqs where I get to get to play for fun, feel your pain 😂🙏
