Navajo Traditional Teachings

Navajo Traditional Teachings

Күн бұрын

A lot of Indigenous people have something they refer to as a vision quest.
In Navajo Traditional Ways, there is a way to prepare oneself for a vision or seek some higher knowledge with their deity.
This usually comes as a promise or agreement. Our Navajo ancestors made promises or agreements with the Holy People. An example of this is the agreement to keep the language and the promise to speak the language to one another.
In the traditional way, this can be done on the individual level as well.
In this video, Navajo historian Wally Brown shares a little bit of what that looks like.
Enjoy the video.

My grandfather grew up in Yuma and then moved to New Mexico after surviving WW2. He fought with the Navajo code talkers and always had great respect for the Navajo culture. I never got to meet him. After a very deep low point in my life, I began running miles every day. One day I couldn't help but feel that he, specifically, was running right beside me as an ancestor. This was at a wildlife preserve in an area in the Pacific Northwest that once belonged to a tribe called Nisqually.

A beautiful encounter❤! 😅Thank you to your grandfather. Perhaps our grandfathers crossed paths or are sharing as we speak. Gampy never spoke of his long involvement in collecting and cracking the Japanese code (a tedious undertaking thus the first ‘computer’). We only learned after his death 😢. I can’t imagine his ability in doing so without input from the Navajo Codetalkers.

This video brought me to tears. I have suffered in despair through strife for so long that I have become ignorant to joy. I didn't realize how much shame I am infected with until realizing I need to make myself presentable to the holy people. I once had so much pride that i was invincible... now I know i could never look my creator in the face. I guess this is what it is to be humbled and why pride is so sinful. I will trade my value of "Take pride in your work" and exchange it with "Be satisfied with a job well done" This is the message that I'm recieving, and it already makes me feel less ill toward others that struggle too. I am looking forward to a good cleansing. 🙏

I am Navajo and lost my father Dr. Jack.C.Jackson on March 5 2023. He like Wally Brown was a traditional man who would talk to me about our culture, history and traditions like Wally does. I miss these teachings and now turn to this channel to learn more. My father was a politician serving in the AZ State Legislature for 20 years, first as a state rep then Senator as a Democrat. He lobbied for the Indian people of AZ and was respected by both parties. His twin brother Dr. Dean C. Jackson was an educator, philosopher and former President of Dine' College. They both emphasized to me importance of maintaining our ways. They were also members of the Native American Church (Peyote Way) my father serving as president for four years of the NAC of Navajoland. Thank you for keeping my learning going as I no longer have my father or uncle to teach me.

You know I have said prayers for answers for so long now for answers from god for the government to not steal my family’s little piece of land from us that we have owned for 24 yrs now. But I don’t think I’m praying right bc today they came and dozed my yard and fences down to make road’s bigger. My heart is so very saddened to see that they are still stealing our land from us. Me and my little girls cried 😢today when they dozed all the trees in what was once our yard. 😢we will miss our birds, rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, and mama and baby deers 🦌 that we had here. I’ve prayed for healing for everyone involved the earth the animals my family’s hearts and even the people who are doing this to our family. I do not lie cheat or steal from anyone so it just really hurts my heart to have this done to us. Our property marker meant nothing to them. 😢
