Alaska Granny has 2 suggestions in her videos that I think are fantastic. One, which is important, is to store children’s medications in separate clearly marked bins from adult medications. In an emergency it might be easy to make a serious error. The other tip she has is to store the little screwdrivers with your batteries. This tip has really helped me! In 2020 our local seafood store put a roll of toilet paper in with every order! And they stocked common vegetables and fruits for their customers. Local is a great suggestion JR.

Our local farmer’s market was shut during the you-know-what. An enterprising young person put together a website & listed all the products from all the vendors & offered delivery for a minimum order. Brilliant! We continued to get fresh food & our local vendors survived the evil empire’s attempt to crush every. Bravo for innovation & creative ways.

be careful of cans with the "pull tab" - good for short term storage and rotation but not good for long term storage (over 1-2 years) as the tabs can leak over time (personal experience) as always, check all canned goods for bulging, dents, etc 🙂

Blessed to have two residences: one in the Trans-Pecos area of TX on the Mexican border and one in the Sacramento Mountains of NM. Started my garden in TX the first week of February--have done it as early as mid-January--so was able to take 19, one gallon bags of lettuce, spinach, radishes, kale and chard to the mountains (where we can't start growing anything till late April) last week. Traded for eggs, elk steaks, wild turkey (not the stuff in a bottle, though that would be OK). All that for this: maximise what you can do and don't forget your network! ALSO--want to thank you for the freeze dried cow promo. We've been at this prepping since 1979...and I had never heard of them! Will definitely check them out. Good vid as usual. Can your own meats in 1 qt mason jars and put them on the shelf at room temp… 5 years easy shelf life for raw chicken, steak or pork from the butcher. No salt needed
@paulschwartz24646 ай бұрын
Much cheaper to buy bulk beef/pork/chicken at Costco/Sam's and pressure can it. You can get away with using cheaper cuts as well because the canning process makes it come out super tender. I just add some salt and can it. You can eat it right out of the jar if you want, but tastes better warmed up.

Thanks for another great video JR. I do have a question about the shelf life of rice. Does Minute white rice have the same shelf life as regular white rice, when stored in Mylar with oxygen absorbers? Taking less energy to cook makes the Minute rice more attractive. At $6.75 for 4.5# it does cost a bit more, but using a lot less butane or propane to cook it may offset that cost.
@diypreppertv6 ай бұрын
I’m not really sure about how it compares to regular white rice, but you could always incorporate it into your preps and rotate it. Maybe have a buffer supply you could use short term and move over to the regular rice after you run out.

If you have special dietary restrictions, don't rely on outside agencies. You have to be ready to take care of yourself. Dealing with celiac (cannot eat wheat, barley, rye grains) during a disaster will be a problem. Local aid agencies are not geared to help those with this dietary restriction. For short term events, Red Cross might be handing out donuts, bagels and sandwiches, but you can't eat any of that. Bigger events might have government agencies handing out MREs with entre's based on wheat products. Can't eat that either. Volunteer groups might have a spaghetti dinner at night and a pancake breakfast in the morning to feed those without power. Again, you can't partake either of these meals.

Have a couple of grid down ways to recharge your smart phone, such as small power banks and a portal solar panel or a small generator. Power lines come down in lots of different kinds of natural disasters, especially in areas with lots of trees or where landslides have blocked roads and delayed the repair crews. You could be without grid power for more than a week and long past the time your phone has lost its charge. You will want have a charged phone at all times so you can contact your insurance company or contact friends and family members. Even if local cell phone towers are overwhelmed with callers, you still may be able to reach an out of state friend or family member. Yes, you could run the engine of your vehicle to charge your phone inside that vehicle, but do you really want to waste that fuel in case local fuel stations are shut down for a week or longer? You need fuel in your vehicle's tank so you have the option of evacuating after a road is cleared of debris, otherwise you could be stuck in a disaster zone for months. So, do have some other way to charge your smart phone and that rechargeable lantern and that rechargeable portable radio.
