I had a friend who wanted me to run the campaign but when the whole time he kept judging saying I was breaking the rules and stuff. And I knew it was wrong, but half of the players weren’t there for dnd they were there to play with their friends and since they were having fun and I was having fun I played a bit different especially since it was their first time. He sent me a bunch of your videos as well as the Matt Mercer guides, all of which I had studied beforehand. He obviously has not seen them all considering how you end this one “none of these rules matter as long as everyone is having fun”. I’ll remember that. Thank you(:

Hey! Tech DM here! A great method to keep online players immersed is screen sharing photoshop and tablet to toggle maps, move personalized tokens of npcs and players, and improvise a battle grid on the fly. You can also nest each map with a texture for cities, dungeons, and the wild. Iiii havent figured out how to add ambient music to a discord live stream yet, but i have a playlist of dungeon and dark synth.

Use click pencils Have sticky notes Have page marker sticky notes (come up with some sort of code to tell you what each tab have, unless your hand writing is small enough) Have a miniature whiteboard if you’re planning to have multiple but small encounters Don’t be afraid to spend a month writing out lore (Google world building tips for writers not just DM’s) HAVE A SESSION 0! (My very first campaign crashed and burned because I didn’t know that there were so many books and I didn’t know to tell my players to only include things from the basic players handbook) it helps to know your players backstory, it helps to know their stats ahead of time, and it helps to know whether your party is balanced. Come game time don’t be afraid to tell your players you’re not ready (although you can Google a one shot and have that up and running in like 10 minutes so that they can learn to role-play their characters if they’re new) Clean your table (there is a very good reason that I will never run a DND campaign at my house) If you’re planning for a longer session have some food planned, doesn’t matter whether it’s online or in person (except if you’re online you only have to worry about yourself) Bring some water (or something to keep you hydrated) If your sessions are going to be capable of running more than eight hours bring some five hour energy, coffee, something that will keep you awake. Never let a player run a class or a race that you don’t know I haven’t been a DM for long but I have played out multiple campaigns and talked with my DM on a few occasions about the struggles of making a campaign, in summary make sure you’re prepared for game day
@CidGuerreiro12344 жыл бұрын
Another thing I'd add is to have a document listing not only the players and their respective characters but also every house rule/homebrew/variant rule that is going to be used, and make that document available to everyone via cloud sharing (or make it a handout if you're using roll20). You don't want to wait until the middle of a gaming session to let your players know that you're running Lingering Injuries, Insanity, and Variant Encumbrance in your campaing.

Here's my set up! It's a long one! TLDR: -Amazon Kindle fire tablet--40$ (used for music) -Chomebook laptop--150-200$~ (used for notes) -JBL clip 3 Bluetooth speaker--50$, mobile, great sound, long battery - initiative tracker for D&d by Malono D'antonio - 3$ -spellbook app (free) -Miniature markers by stuffer shack (10$~) I have 2, foldable white tables linked together, and I sit at the longer part of it. It has lots of leg room and leaves lots of room for battlemats and players to set down their backpacks and stuff. In front of my DM screen, I have my computer. I have all my notes and monster stats on my computer. I always print out monster stat blocks in paper as keeping track of what they can do on the computer is a nightmare. I recently got a 40$ Amazon Kindle fire 7 tablet for my birthday. Why? Specifically for Spotify and KZbin, MUSIC! music is a huge part of my games and I have my own play lists for everything. Having the tablet specifically just for music is very, very handy. (I also have a Bluetooth speaker) My phone! I have a spellbook app (which has all spells in it, and has lots of great filters) I can find the spell I need in seconds without having to flip through books. I also have an initiative tracker app (initiative tracker for D&d by Malono D'Antonio.) he's a really nice guy and replies to your reviews in Google play very quickily. It's 3$ for the full version (totally worth it) it has almost all monsters from the monster manual in it (there's a few that aren't there, which is a bummer) however, it's also very fluid, easy to use, and you can track conditions with it with little emojis, that give an entire discription of the condition with just a tap. You can also see the whole monster stats by pressing the monster. You can track AC, HP, PP, it's very handy. I also, would highly recommend miniature markers from stuffer shack! They're a small business, but basically you can order any number of markers (I have 5 sets. 2 sets of 1-5, 2 sets of 1-3, and 2 set of 1-20. I have never needed to have more markers than that, and they work really great! They have a sticky bottom and are very adhesive, even if left out overnight! (sometimes I don't clean up after late night d and D sessions and wake up in the morning and they are still sticking fine!) it you use mass minis, I honestly cannot recommend them enough, they are really great people and their customer service is great! Quick tip for anyone who wants lots of minis, by the D&D board games, they are expensive, but have a ton of minis. I basically threw out the board game and just used the minis. Their high quality, give you monsters in groups, and can be used for almost anything. I didn't get the tomb of anihilation one as that one has really specific minis I don't need, but wrath of Ashardalon, temple of elemental evil, wrath of the Giants, and castle raven loft are all very valuable and great for their cost. well worth the buy.

I have a good suggestion for DM's who really like using mini's: Our group's DM has this grid sort of thing that he can draw terrain on with markers. And then he can just wipe it off if we move somewhere else. It's not a whiteboard: it's this beige sort of board thing? It's kind of like this one: www.amazon.com/Battle-Grid-Game-Mat-36/dp/B01MQHECUR His is a more cheaper option, since he just moved into his current home. Either way, I really recommend it: keeps the game going smooth. In one session, we went from escaping a cult compound to a town, and to a desert camp. And from a player perspective: things never felt slow for a minute. It's also perfect if you have a visual learner on the autism spectrum in your group (like myself). I'm the only autistic member of the group, and I just need more visual aid if I don't want to forget important terrain details in puzzles or something. Long story short: seeing something drawn out saves my brain energy to remember it. Which it can then use to visualize other stuff. Think like computer RAM: I can only remember this much at a time in the Theater of the Mind. If things stack up too much, then I can't even properly focus on what the DM is saying. But this mat definitely solves most of my issues, allowing me to actually enjoy the game without straining myself. For example: We went to 2 floors in the cult compound, since the mechanism for the portcullis we needed to go through was on the second floor. The portcullis mechanism wasn't even drawn on there, but in the context of the map of that floor, I still knew where everything was. I knew exactly how to get to the dang staircase when the cultists spotted my Paladin (she betrayed the cult). So all in all: that wipe-able mat is a mini-using DM must have if you ask me.

Two great tips I use I’m my games is… 1) Grab a big scary monster mini and put it next to your dm screen where everyone can see it. Fear is power. 2) if you want to create fear or paranoia, ask them to roll perception checks or mental saves now and again for no reason.

Well what I do is have post-it-notes to have the plot written on them and sheets of paper that shows the encounters , stats and stats. Every session I think before hand about secret encounters , regular encounters and items that my players could get. I also read the stats of monsters before hand and list there Ac , hp and hit dice. I also have read all challenge ratings when I want to decide on monsters for my players to fight. That’s just my simple things though. I won’t explain the rest even though I could but it would take too long to type. Edit: if I have a plot that revolves around an Item that a player has I make a villain who with the item will become unstoppable but also the item might be the one true thing that could fully kill them but if I want to get creative I do a time travel thing where the players have to fight and participate in things such as wars and escort missions using mini’s. I also make things like monsters who when have too much hp for my players to handle I nerf there hp, that’s just how I handle my campaign though so don’t get mad if your players don’t like the Idea and Just be As creative as you can be as the D M. Oh also don’t forget to read the players hand book when you have a spell caster in the party and prepare to read the spells before hand. you also will need to check the challenge rating for each monster but remember they usually are wrong cuz I played a level 3 in a party of level 3’s who beat a chimera. 4 people killed it together.also don’t forget to think about what could kill your players. Think about this, 400 nothics burst into a bar and attack. Who do you think would win? Nothics or a level 1 gnome monk? 3 nothics vs 2 players at level 2 - 3 is still going to be a challenge so keep numbers in mind. You also need to read any extra detail, say you made the party fight a red slaad. What would happen if you read about the tadpoles?you would regret it and you would either let it kill you party or remove it from the story. This is very simple logic that all D M’s should follow if they don’t want to make mistakes, read stats before using anything yet. There are also conditions but they should be on a D M screen but if they aren’t read the players hand book or the dungeon masters guide. That is all I must truly say for some D M’s.just remember to balance wars and battles out.

May you please do a sorcerer beginner's guide? That would be pretty awesome. I love you guys beginner videos. I would also consider this viseo as one of them.

Forget t-posing to assert dominance, just carry around a DM screen.

I had a session a few days ago, it went well for the most part but keeping them on track is difficult. Part of it is my fault, in most of they’re past campaigns the DM’s they had(we had) didn’t put as much detail into basic things, they only put work into the main thing not backgrounds and side characters. So when I described the inn rooms as “having a cabinet with two shelves, the bottom one with a spare set of sheets with small layer of dust on it.” They went crazy, for some reason they believed that the dust was important otherwise why would I mention it?(they were wrong) eventually I got so annoyed I told them to make a perception check, the reason for the dust was the fact that the servants switch the sheets every two weeks, meaning the sheets on the bottom are about to be switched onto the bed. This kind of thing is a problem for me because I absolutely love putting all of that work and thought into my worlds but I feel bad for stressing them out sometimes. Any tips for how I can avoid this kind of thing while still putting all of that depth and detail into my story?
