A valid concern. In the Philippines there used to be something called a "Tanim bala" (planting bullets) scam. A luggage inspector will suddenly "find" a bullet in your luggage. You'll be held at the airport security room and interrogated, and then extorted for thousands of dollars. You see that luggage plastic wrapping service early in this video? It came about BECAUSE of this scam. It persisted for several months despite inspections and investigations, but a law was later passed to just confiscate the bullet without inconveniencing the passengers, stopping that particular scam entirely. (There's some funny coincidences regarding presidential-level politics regarding that scam, but that's another topic.)

I also use external bright straps, one horizontal and one vertical. Easier to spot on the luggage belt. Flying international in other countries has never been an issue. Return to the US only have carry-on but when my Filipina wife travels with we use a large check bag as we stay longer. Many foreign airlines have a strict weight limit of 7kg or 15 lbs. It difficult when on an international flight to get to luggage belt as immigration rapidly. In Seattle there us a very high theft of luggage from people coming from outside. Seattle has defended the police and the judicial system is so corrupt that charge the police when they do their job.

You can only do so much to try and prevent theft. My hard case suitcase had TSA built in lock, outer luggage strap and I did everything recommended but it was broken in to after check in. It was obviously someone working at the baggage handling dept. When I retrieved my luggage at destination, the strap was dangling, not secured to my luggage. Luckily, only cheap clothes were stolen. TSA locks only work if you are in the US. Other countries don't abide by these rules and just smash the locks off. I also had a recent trip to Florida where security actually broke the zipper pulls of one of our cases and fastened back up with tape and a note inside saying they "found something suspicious and removed it" but didn't say what it was. I never carry anything that I shouldn't and the only thing missing was a bluetooth speaker! So, it was just theft!
@monitablet4849
@monitablet4849 6 ай бұрын
The Bluetooth speaker is electronic, hence, not allowed in checked luggage. ALL electronics have to be packed in carry on bags and removed for TSA checks (placed in one of the bins). This video must be about ten years out of date. I don't even think they allow checked bags to be plastic wrapped anymore because it's a pain for them to cut it off. And if it is, they're definitely cutting into that bag. It's the surest way to have luggage damaged, apparently. Or so I was told at the airport - ten years ago.

Forget about using expensive luggage tags. Mine was stolen when checked in. A simple no frills cheap one will do. Airports in UK are notorious for theft of items from checked in bags. Baggage handlers do their thieving job by hiding in the aircraft luggage hold away from the view of the public. Most are in cahoots even with the airport security personnel assigned to monitor the loading and unloading process. As long as one doesn't pack any valuable items in the checked in bags, there is no worries of theft. On the other hand, those drug smugglers will be stupid enough to risk tens of thousands of dollars worth of drugs to place them into anyone's bags. Theft only occurs from the time the luggage is checked in until its loaded onto an aircraft and vice versa from the time the luggage are unloaded until it arrives at the arriving area conveyor belt of the arrival hall. It's the airport and the airlines responsibilities to look into these areas in order to prevent theft.

In the US, people like my friend Larry (used to be a Wackenhut minimum wage guard) are TSA luggage "Inspectors". If a bag falls off a tram from the terminal to the aircraft, Larry inspects it, and if it's damaged, tags it, tapes it with orange TSA tape and files a report on it. ANY unauthorized person TOUCHES checked (tagged) luggage may be shot and KILLED (and have been at TUL Int'l). If you buy $6 bags that don't have zippers that are lockable, go spend $3 a bag more! Plastic Zip-ties (aka cable-ties, very heavy ones) are better than those tiny "luggage locks". If as a Deputy Sheriff we preferred them to steel HAND CUFFS...Duct tape across the lids of hard luggage is "tamper proof" evidence. I used it on my camera cases with $35,000 worth of camera gear in them. If the tape was torn, I went straight to the airlines claims office and let THEM hash it out with my insurance carrier before I opened it!

I had a bad experience on Garuda airline in Indonesia. The authorities said my carry-on was a little big for their small plane, so they checked it in before I boarded the plane. Thought the airline was reputable and also with the last-minute pressure, I totally forgot I had some foreign currencies in there. All foreign cash was cleverly stolen. Reported to the airline and some authorities but they did nothing. Definitely it was an inside job as they knew this happened quite often but did nothing to stop or tighten up security. So beware if you fly Garuda Airlines.

Just a heads up that I have been hearing about people grabbing bags from overhead compartments. It just happened to me a month ago. I was sitting 3 rows from the front and fortunately the lady sitting next to me on the aisle had helped me put a duffel bag in the overhead. When we landed, a lady in the first row asked for help getting her carryon out of the overhead and then pointed at my bag and said for someone to hand that to her too. My seat mate said “that’s not your bag.” She ignored her and tried again and we both got up and said “that’s not your bag.” The woman then turned around and got right off the plane.

To be fair, the Airlines top management are not aware of their staff's performance on ground. Thus such incidences happened almost at all airports in the world. Even premium airline like Singapore Airlines, they will not entertain claims for damaged luggage handles and wheels even though it was so clearly the luggage went through rough handling by their handling agent after the luggage has checked in. If and unless the airline concern takes concrete steps to look into these matters, all travellers should go on the media to name the airlines with the worst ground services. Many awards were given

The plastic wrapping (as shown in your video) makes no sense for checked luggage. TSA screening for checked luggage is after the gate agent puts the bag on the conveyor belt. TSA can cut the plastic wrap to inspect the bag like they cut your personal lock off. Master TSA lock key! You can purchase them online. Actually, they can easily be picked because the standard TSA 002 thru 007 have minimal tumblers designed for one master key to open seven different types of locks. Hard case suitcases and NO plain zips (use some kind of zip protection). It is quite easy for thieves to unzip and re-zip again. It is hard to know what is missing out of your suitcase. After locking, use sticky tapes to wrap up your suitcases or use wrapping service at the airports. Carry a roll of sticky tapes in your carry-on. Your carry-on is safer because everyone was watching, including you i hope. Put all your valuables in your waist bag, wear it and never leave it unattended. Take your passports (or valuables) out and put them back in the waist bag after use immediately.

Then they tell you to prove the items were actually in your bag and were taken. And do you have receipts for the value. I've encountered this a few times. Just anticipate anything in your checked bag can be stolen. My last flight, my girlfriend and I used one bag. I had three nice shirts and three pairs of pants stolen and she had three dresses stolen. Other items were stolen also. There was no damage, so it was opened with a TSA master key.

Zippers can easily be opened with just a pen/pencil which makes luggage with TSA locks better because they won't be able to open up the luggage once they puncture a zipper and that makes your luggage less desirable. Without it, they can just open it up then use the zipper pull to reseal the luggage like they were never there. They also have luggage now that have covered zippers you can't do that to. Next thing is be sure your luggage tag w/ your address is encased rather than visible so thieves don't just walk up and write down the address then go to your home to rob it assuming it's empty since you're travelling. Mine has a pull-out tab w/ the address and I use scotch tape on it to keep it closed as another layer of protection as it would take more time to get the info. Lastly, black luggage is too prevalent so best to pick a color/design that is more unique and easy to spot quickly.

There were loads of workers arrested recently at Tenerife airport so I’m guessing that was the most likely place. We went and bought a hard shell set after that and try to only take carry on where we can now.

Why do we have to protect our luggage from theft? Why not encourage airlines to offer worry free travel by making sure that the passengers luggage are safe.? Unless these thieves area not addressed well there will always be pilferage and losses because these thieves thrives in their area. Eliminate thieves and it's a worry free travel and the company gets a boost!

It’s not an issue with the airlines…they lease space from the airports. All luggage handlers are employed by the airports. These jobs pay low and have high turnover rates so that airports are desperate for employees. It’s a sad situation. Not to mention that airports can sell off the contents of Lost & Found rooms every few months; these are bought in bulk by companies that then auction off individual bags. The buyers then place the contents on web sites such as ThredUp. It’s a racket, for sure.

Good point on lock. TSA broke my wife’s locking system and zipper after a flight. Got the notice they opened the luggage for inspection. They did not care they broke her lock and ZIPPER and and would not provide any reimbursement for the damage they caused. That’s BS and typical government crap. Oh, by the way she had a TSA approved lock!

TSA locks are a waste of money. I've done 5 international flights in the past. My first 2 trips, I used locks and when I received my luggage at my destination, the locks were taken off and gone. On my next trip, I left my luggage, as is, with no lock and when I got my luggage at my destination, nothing was touched. Tried that, again on my next 2 trips with on locks and the same result, the bag was untouched

I purchased a hard sided check in bag that has latch instead of a zipper, expensive but better and straps. A sharp object like a acrew driver punches through a zipper. I transfered company equipment to Chicago area and my company put on an airline there. Had a bag of tools checked in. I was watching the ground crew loading bags and one man cut open the bag and stole tools and electronics. I filmed it and contacted the airline and they denied it even with the video and told me I was racist and pulled of the flight. Many of the ground crews are contracted to the airline as it cuts cost. I went to another airline but never received remembrance for the tools. The company filed suit but the airline did nothing, this airline main hub is Chicago and will never use them.

TSA lock keys are available on line so are not secure, you can save on airport wrapping fees by using kitchen cling film and put the roll in your carry on for the return journey, putting coloured card under the film will hell you find it at the carousel when you arrive.

There is absolutely no way to prevent items being stolen from your checked bag. If you complain to the airline, they say they only take the bag at the counter and are done with it. You have to go to TSA. The TSA will give you the runaround and an arrogant attitude, because they know their employees are stealing from the baggage. I've encountered this. The TSA will open your bags with their master key and steal whatever they want. This article is practically useless.

Opportunity cost of hard shell luggages . They add weight plus the heavy locks. Probably get lighter luggages, normal locks but add your own straps. This is a deterrent as the thieves need time to steal items . Luggages with pockets, place all your junk here. Even if stolen it is okay. Take note. Co passengers could be bigger thieves. They can open the overhead compartment to remove your bag quietly. While you are dozing off.Or the backseat passenger can use their legs to pull your bag which is placed under your seat. Specifically ladies' handbags. They will empty everything and push it back nicely.Happened before. Thieves are there at the check in counter. Lurking around with their trolley. They pretend to be passengers waiting to remove your bag very fast..their target is always laptop bags.

My brother NEVER locks his hold baggage. His reason? He believes its a message to would be thieves that there is nothing worth stealing in it. For sure he carries valuables in his hand luggage. But interestingly he's never had anything stolen from his hold baggage and over the years he has travelled to many places in the world. I have to admit personally I'm more cautious and lock mine, but anyways its worked for him...

Lol. The entire video is null & void when you have the fact that both TSA master keys can be purchased from a certain online auction site, the big online retailer / vid streaming / food delivery / music portal etc & also via big Chinese marketplaces that begin with Al or wi or ba etc. TSA locks are the most unsecure luggage security to ever exist. In the past a thief would have to pick each suticase/bag padlock individually. Now they only need 2 keys & can have any case or bag opened in seconds.

If I absolutely must check a bag ... First I only travel with Pelican or Canuk hard shell cases, ... Take it to the oversize luggage check (where you would take sports equipment, tools or firearms), ... have the x-ray, then search if needed, then back the bag out, and put on REAL Master Lock padlocks. The TSA locks are not very secure and as noted ... the master keys can be bought anywhere ... just go to Staples, buy 4 different "colors" and you have 99.9 % of the keys used. Oh, ... and I fly over 300 flights per year US, Canada, Central and South America as well as over seas.
